The Breaking Point
Outside Victoria's hospital room, Louis was standing, waiting for the night, and so filled with tension within him. He had gotten a call tonight from one of the nurses-nothing big, but something was off. The past few weeks had stretched him to the limit, and no matter how much Louis made an effort to keep himself together, he knew he wasn't. The moment drew further and further away, and the more he reached for it, the more Victoria slipped through his grasp.
The hospital doors slid open, and as Louis stepped down the hallway, his eyes landed on one altogether too familiar figure.
Anger pulled his chest tight as Louis watched him leave the room, his face troubled. Louis's fists clenched at his sides, his jealousy and suspicions bubbling to the surface.
Why was Alex always here? Why was he always this close to Victoria?
Louis, in a stride, went to him without thinking, his footsteps heavy with rage. "What the hell were you doing in there?" Louis demanded, his voice low and even, but dangerous.
Alex stopped in his tracks and swung to face Louis. His face was calm, but his eyes betrayed a tension. "I was checking on her, Louis. That's all."
Louis's jaw clamped shut. "Checking on her? You seem to spend an awful lot of time 'checking' on my wife."
"She's been going through a lot," Alex replied evenly. "I'm just trying to be a friend."
"Friend?" Louis repeated with sarcasm and anger oozing from his voice. "You've been circling her like a vulture, waiting for the moment to swoop in. You're not fooling anyone, Alex."
Alex stood his ground, eyes level. "I care about Victoria, yes. But this isn't the time for us to have this discussion, Louis."
Louis stepped a little closer, fists clenched. "What exactly went on in there?"
Before Alex could even open his mouth to reply, Victoria's voice cut through the tension. "Louis!" she called, standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with panic. She took a step forward, her heart racing at the anger in Louis's eyes. "Please don't do this."
Louis turned to her, his chest heaving with anger. "What happened, Victoria? What aren't you telling me?"
Victoria's stomach twisted as she looked between Louis and Alex. In Louis's eyes, she saw the jealousy, the hurt, the suspicion, and her heart sank. This was exactly what she had feared.
"Louis, nothing happened," her voice shook. "Please, just calm down."
"Nothing?" Louis's voice cracked with emotion. "Then why do I feel like you're lying to me?"
Victoria had tears in her eyes, for Louis truly looked pained. She had wanted to keep the near-kiss a secret, knowing it would only make matters worse. Still, at this point, with Louis demanding answers from her, she could no longer hide the fact.
"I. I stopped it," she whispered, barely audible. "He tried to kiss me, but I stopped it."
The room fell silent. Louis paled, his heart racing against his chest as the words just began to sink in. He was staring at Victoria, eyes brimming with shock, hurt, and betrayal.
"You. stopped it?" Louis repeated, his voice shaking. "So, it almost happened."
Victoria wiped at her tears, her hands shaking. "Louis, it didn't mean anything. I pulled away. I-
"It didn't mean anything?" Louis repeated, voice rising as the anger he'd been fighting to keep tamped down finally burst over. "You let him get close enough to try, Victoria! You know how that feels? Knowing all the time I've been here, fighting for us, you've been-
"I am not the only one to blame here!" Victoria interrupted, breaking her voice with emotion. "You've been pushing me away for weeks! You've been angry, jealous, and suffocating me with your accusations! I've been drowning, Louis, and I didn't know how to reach you."
Louis's heart clenched as her words hit him like a punch to the gut. He knew she was right; he had been pushing her away, letting his insecurities drive a wedge between them. But to hear her admit that she was drawn to Alex was like hearing her twist a knife in his chest.
"So this is my fault?" Louis snapped, the bitterness etched in his tone. "I'm the reason you almost kissed him?"
"No," Victoria whispered, shaking. "But Louis, you've been shutting me out. I needed you, and instead of letting me in, you shut me down. I felt like I was losing you, and Alex was there. He was. he was offering me stability."
"Stability?" Louis spat back, anger overflowing. "He was offering you an out, Victoria! Can't you see that? Hе's bееn trуing to takе you away from mе sincе thе momеnt hе showеd up."
Victoria wept now, the pain in her heart aching desperately as she fought to make her explanation. "I don't want to leave you, Louis.
But I couldn't continue living like this. I just can't keep fighting you and fighting the world at the same time. I'm exhausted. I'm so tired."
Louis stepped backward as his chest heaved, an equal amount of anger and heartbreak. "So, what do you want, Victoria? Do you want to leave me? Run off with Alex and start all anew?
Victoria shook her head, barely in a whisper. "No, I don't want that. I just. I just need to feel like we're in this together again. I need to know that we can still fix this."
Louis's heart ached as he looked at her, the woman he had fought so hard to protect, the woman he loved more than anything. But at this moment, he wasn't so sure if they could fix what had been broken.
"I've been trying to repair this, Victoria," Louis said, his voice hoarse with emotion. "But every time that I look at you, I feel like I am losing you. And now, knowing that Alex almost kissed you. It feels like I've already lost."
"You haven't lost me," Victoria said quietly, stepping closer to him. "But you need to stop pushing me away. I love you Louis, but we can't keep going on like this. We have to find a way to rebuild. To trust each other again."
Louis stared into her eyes, his heart breaking as he saw the pain in them. He wanted to believe that they could rebuild what had been shattered. The jealousy, the hurt fear of losing her seemed so overwhelming.
"I don't know how to trust you right now," Louis admitted, cracking. "I don't know how to get past this."
Victoria wiped at her tears; her heart was heavy from the weight of his words. "Then we'll figure it out. But you have to be willing to try. We both do."
Louis just stood there, his mind racing with confusion, anger, and heartbreak. He wanted to trust her, to fight for what they had built, but the image of Alex and Victoria together haunted him, tearing at his already fragile heart.
"I need some time," Louis whispered, his voice hoarse. "I need to figure this out."
Victoria nodded, her chest tightening with the fear that time apart would only drive them further apart. But she understood. They'd both been through so much, and right now, they were standing on the edge of something they might not be able to come back from.
"Take your time," Victoria whispered, while in her heart she felt it was tearing into bits at the thought of growing distance between them. "But please, Louis. Don't give up on us."
Louis looked at her a last time, his eyes brimming with a mix of love and pain. Without another word, he pivoted and left her standing there alone in the room; her heart shattered.
Later that night, sitting by the window across from the city lights, it was as though the argument with Louis had left Victoria hollow, her emotions raw and so bare. She had wanted to make things right and explain what happened, but all they managed to do was hurt one another some more.
She thought about Alex, about how close she had come to crossing a line from which she could never return. And even though she hadn't kissed him, the damage was already done. She knew Louis's trust in her had been shattered, and she wasn't sure how they would ever be able to repair it.
She stared at the city, her mind floating back to The man she loved, the man who had fought for her through every storm tossed their way. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him, but at that moment, she wasn't quite sure how to hold onto him either.
And with each passing hour, the distance between them grew.
