Dangerous Proximity
Victoria fixed her dress while sitting at a private dining table, surrounded by the sounds of silverware and quiet chatter in a fancy restaurant. The soft lighting made the place feel cozy, and the smell of good food filled the air. Alex picked this quiet restaurant away from the busy city for their meeting, which could be about work-or something else.
Victoria hadn't mentioned this dinner to Louis. She told herself it was just business, but deep down, she knew there was more to it.
This was not only about Alex's proposal; it was also about how much she was drawn to him, how he made her feel valued in ways Louis hadn't lately.
When Alex walked up to the table, his warm smile and confident walk made her heart race. He looked sharp in his dark suit, and his eyes locked onto hers with a knowing look.
"Victoria," Alex said as he sat down. "You look amazing, as always."
"Thanks," she replied, feeling flattered but trying to stay focused on business. "I'm glad we could meet again. I've been thinking about your proposal."
Alex smiled, keeping his gaze on her. "I was hoping you would. There's a lot of potential here, Victoria. You could make this project shine. I know you're busy, but this could be the fresh start you need."
Victoria nodded and took a sip of her wine. She liked his straightforwardness. "I won't lie, it's tempting. Especially with everything happening right now."
Alex leaned in, resting his elbows on the table. "I can see you're carrying a lot. You've been through so much, Victoria. The lawsuit, the poisoning, the board pressure-it's too much for anyone. But you're still here. That's what I admire about you. You don't let anything break you."
His words hit her hard, echoing her thoughts from the past weeks. With Louis, she felt constantly managed, but Alex recognized her strength and saw her as the woman she used to be.
"Thank you," Victoria said softly, meeting his eyes. "It's been tough. Harder than I expected."
"I know," Alex replied sincerely. "But you don't have to face it alone. Sometimes, it's okay to lean on someone who gets what you're going through."
Victoria shifted, feeling nervous as the conversation became more personal. "Louis has been there for me," she said quickly, defensively. "He's trying his best."
Alex raised an eyebrow gently. "I'm sure he is. But sometimes, people drift apart. It doesn't mean love is gone, but maybe something else is missing. Someone who understands you differently."
The air grew tense, and Victoria felt the weight of his words. She couldn't deny the connection between them, how easily they talked, and how Alex seemed to see right through her walls. But she was married, and despite the problems with Louis, they still shared love and history.
Yet, she couldn't help but feel drawn to Alex, the attraction growing stronger with each moment.
As dinner went on, the business talk faded, replaced by laughter and personal stories. They reminisced about their law school days and shared career tales, revealing a bond they once had-and still have.
By dessert, Victoria felt a new tension inside her. The wine made her feel less guarded, and Alex's lingering gaze sent a thrill through her.
As the waiter cleared their plates, Alex leaned in, speaking softly. "You know, Victoria, I've thought about you a lot over the years. What might have been if things were different? I didn't realize how much I missed you until we reconnected."
Victoria's heart raced, and she hesitated, unsure how to respond. Part of her wanted to pull away and remind him she was married, but another part was tempted to cross the line, even if just for a moment.
Alex reached across the table, lightly brushing her hand. The touch sent a jolt through her, and she froze, torn between feelings. She knew she should stop this.
But she didn't pull away.
"Victoria," Alex whispered. "I know this isn't the best time, but we've always had something special. Can't you feel it?"
His fingers brushed hers, and for a moment, Victoria imagined letting go of her burdens and embracing Alex's admiration, feeling wanted without the complications of her life with Louis.
But reality hit her hard. She quickly withdrew her hand, heart racing. "Alex, I can't," she said, voice shaky but firm. "I'm married."
Alex's expression softened, but his gaze remained intense. "I know. I'm not asking you to do anything you're not ready for. But if you ever change your mind... I'll be here."
Victoria felt guilty. She had let things get too close, let herself get swept up in the moment. She stood up quickly, needing to step away from Alex before it went too far.
"I should go," she said, grabbing her coat.
"Victoria-" Alex began, but she interrupted.
"I'll think about the business proposal," she said, her voice stronger now. "But that's all."
Alex nodded slowly, still looking at her. "Of course. I'll wait for your decision."
As Victoria left the restaurant, the cool night air felt like a wake-up call. She had almost crossed a line-almost given in to something that could ruin everything she built with Louis.
Yet, as she walked away, she couldn't forget the warmth of Alex's hand on hers, and the doubts that had been growing in her heart began to settle in deeper.
She loved Louis. But at that moment, she couldn't help but wonder if love was enough.
