A Surprising Offer
Victoria was in her hospital bed, distractedly looking at her emails, when Sarah came to the door with a nervous look. "Someone is here to see you," she said carefully.
"Who?" Victoria asked, glancing up. She didn't want more bad news or visitors showing pity. With her recovery, a legal fight, and figuring out who poisoned her, she felt worn out.
Sarah stepped aside, and a tall, well-dressed man walked in, exuding confidence and charm. His bright smile and sharp blue eyes were familiar.
"Victoria," he said warmly. "It's been a long time."
Victoria was surprised. "Alex Hart?"
Alex Hart, a charming lawyer and former friend from law school, stood before her, looking very successful. They had parted on good terms, but memories of their shared goals and attraction remained.
"It's been too long," Alex said, moving closer. "I heard about what you've been through. I wanted to check on you... and I have a proposal."
Victoria raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A proposal? After all these years, you just show up with a business idea?"
Alex laughed lightly. "I've been following your career. You've done amazing things, Victoria, and now you're in the middle of this mess." He looked genuinely concerned. "I want to offer you a way out-or at least a new chance."
Victoria leaned back, watching him closely. "I'm listening."
Alex sat beside her. "I'm working with some investors on a new project. It's legal tech that uses AI to help with complex cases. It could change corporate law by automating tasks so lawyers can focus on strategy."
Victoria tilted her head, interested. "And how am I involved?"
"Your name and reputation," Alex said, smiling wider. "Despite the lawsuit and your situation, you're still one of the best lawyers out there. The investors want you on board. This could help you step back from daily stress and into something bigger."
Victoria felt skeptical. "It sounds too good to be true. Why now? Why me?"
Alex's expression softened. "Part of this is personal. When I heard what you were going through, I wanted to help. I believe in this project, and I believe you could make it great. You've always been strong, Victoria, and this is a chance to make a big impact."
Victoria's thoughts raced. The offer was tempting, especially with everything happening. Starting fresh with a new project sounded great. But it felt sudden, almost too easy.
She narrowed her eyes, studying Alex. "What's the catch? I know you, Alex. You're not just here to help."
Alex leaned back slightly. "No catch, but the timing is important. My investors want to start soon, and with your situation, this could be a way to change direction. You'd still be in law but in a leadership role. It's a win-win."
Victoria hesitated, feeling the weight of his words. Her life was chaotic-her health was fragile, the lawsuit with Michael was ongoing, and her family was falling apart. But leaving everything she built felt wrong.
"I can't just walk away from Sebastian Industries," she said firmly. "I've worked too hard for that, especially with Michael trying to destroy it."
Alex nodded. "I understand. I'm not asking you to quit. Think of this as a backup plan. If things get worse, you'll have a solid opportunity to fall back on."
Victoria sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know, Alex. This is all happening too fast."
Alex reached out, gently taking her hand. His touch was warm, reminding her of the connection they once had. "I'm not asking for a decision now. Take your time. Just know that I'm here to help. You're not alone."
She looked at him, feeling torn between the past and present, between wanting a fresh start and handling her responsibilities. "Why are you really here, Alex?" she asked quietly.
Alex met her gaze sincerely. "Because I believe in you. I always have."
Before she could respond, the door opened, and Louis walked in, his face hardening at the sight of Alex. His eyes moved between them, suspicion rising.
"Am I interrupting?" Louis asked, his voice tense.
Victoria pulled her hand away from Alex's, her heart racing. "Louis, this is Alex Hart. We went to law school together. He was just-"
"-Just catching up," Alex finished smoothly, standing and extending a hand to Louis. "I've heard a lot about you, Louis. Victoria speaks highly of you."
Louis ignored the hand, his eyes fixed on Alex. "What are you doing here?"
Alex's smile stayed. "I was offering Victoria a business opportunity. Something to think about with everything going on. But I can see this isn't the best time."
Louis crossed his arms. "No, it's not."
Victoria felt the tension between the two men. She sensed Louis's jealousy and knew Alex's presence was adding to it.
"I'll let you two talk," Alex said, stepping back. "Victoria, think about the offer. I'll be in touch."
As Alex left, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension. Louis turned to Victoria, his eyes full of concern and frustration.
"Who is he?" Louis asked, his voice low but sharp.
"Louis, calm down," Victoria said, trying to ease the situation. "Alex is just an old friend. He has a business idea that could help us."
"Help us?" Louis scoffed, running a hand through his hair. "Or help himself? I don't trust him, Victoria. The timing and his charm-he's playing you."
Victoria sighed, feeling weary. "It's just an offer. I haven't decided anything yet. But it's good to know there's a backup plan."
Louis shook his head, his expression firm. "You don't need him, Victoria. We'll get through this together."
Victoria met his gaze, torn between loyalty to Louis and the temptation of Alex's offer. The stakes were high, and her choices would shape her future.
"I just need time to think," Victoria said quietly.
Louis sighed, still frustrated. "Fine. But be careful. He's not here for your benefit."
As Louis left, Victoria closed her eyes, feeling the weight of her decision. Alex's offer was tempting, but stepping away from everything she built was a big risk.
And with the mystery of her poisoning still unsolved, one thing was clear-nothing in her life was as simple as it seemed.
