A New Beginning Part 2
After spending about two weeks, my honeymoon with Sean finally came to an end. Today, we are returning to Arizona. Sean took me to his home, and to my surprise, a surprise was prepared for us. A surprise party to welcome our return was arranged by Sean's mother and sister. Of course, I was very happy because it meant I was warmly welcomed by Sean's family.
Sean, Aunt Silva, Sunny, and I were in the backyard pavilion. We had just finished the evening meal, where various delicious foods were served on the table. Aunt Silva had intentionally prepared it for Sean and me. To spend time on this bright evening, Aunt Silva invited us to gather in this pavilion.
"Sean, Leslie, how was your honeymoon? Enjoyable?" Aunt Silva asked in the midst of silence. Sean and I were enjoying warm tea, while Sunny was busy with her phone. A teenager like Sunny was probably busy exchanging messages with her friends or maybe her boyfriend.
"Yes, enjoyable," Sean replied. "Very enjoyable. Thank you for the gift, Aunt." I said this because Aunt Silva paid for our honeymoon tickets and all expenses.
"Aunt?" Aunt Silva snorted. "Why do you still call me aunt? Call me mom. I am your mom now too, Leslie."
I swallowed saliva; it seemed like I had just made a mistake. Aunt Silva seemed offended, but I really wasn't used to calling her mom.
"Yes, Leslie. Don't call her aunt, but call her mom. I am now your sister too." Sunny chimed in, even diverting her attention from her phone. "Maybe Leslie is not used to calling mom. Just understand because we just got married."
However, Sean defended me, and I felt relieved.
"Yes, yes, mom knows. Don't forget next time to call mom, not aunt."
"Yes, Mom," I quickly replied, this time not making the mistake again.
"Well, that's more like it. By the way, don't thank me because your parents also contributed to the honeymoon gift for both of you."
I just nodded because there was nothing wrong with what my mother-in-law said. My parents also contributed to the honeymoon gift for Sean and me.
"What did you guys do during your honeymoon last month?"
The question came from Sunny, a question that made Sean and me embarrassed at the same time.
"What kind of question is that, Sunny? Look, because of your question, they feel embarrassed and awkward," Aunt Silva said, laughing. Both of them laughed at us, while Sean and I just remained silent with embarrassed faces.
"You will also find out when you get married, Sunny." Sean finally spoke up.
"Maybe Bro Sean doesn't know how to make Sis Leslie happy, that's why I asked."
"Huh, nonsense. Of course, I know how to make my wife happy. Don't underestimate me."
"Because usually, Bro Sean is useless."
"Ck, a brat like you dares to say that. Do you want me to give you a lesson? Come here."
Sunny screamed in fear as Sean walked towards her, and instantly, the girl ran. Sean, of course, chased after her. The chasing game between the siblings happened. I was no longer surprised to see it because they often acted like that. I just watched them while smiling; their behavior was very funny.
"Leslie."
However, a voice calling me instantly diverted my gaze. The owner of that voice was my mother-in-law.
"Yes, Mom," I replied.
"I am very happy because you finally became a part of the Maxwell family."
"Thank you, Mom. I am also very happy to be a part of this family."
I was momentarily stunned when my mother-in-law suddenly held both of my hands. "Let's forget all the bad things in the past, okay?"
"Of course, I have already forgotten," I quickly replied.
"Thank goodness for that. Oh, by the way, did Sean fulfill his duties properly during your honeymoon?"
My face instantly warmed up because I understood exactly what duties my mother-in-law was referring to. "Y-yes, of course, Sean fulfilled his duties well," I replied softly, bowing my head. I didn't want my blushing face to be seen by Sean's mother. Her laughter made me even more embarrassed, and now I dared not lift my head.
"That's good then. I hope you and Sean can give me grandchildren soon. Your children will also be the successors of my company because, as you know, Sean does not want to take over as the leader of the company. Instead, he wants to follow in his father's footsteps and become a lawyer."
Yes, I knew that very well. Aunt Silva had a large company, where Sean was supposed to take over as the leader, but Sean didn't want to occupy that position and instead wanted to become a lawyer like his father, which is why he studied law in college.
"Sunny is the same. She doesn't want to take over as the leader of the company and instead wants to become a designer. Huh, none of my children want to help me manage the company."
Aunt Silva sighed softly, looking very disappointed.
"That's why I have high hopes for you, Leslie. Hopefully, the child you give birth to will be willing to take over the company for me. Of course, if he is willing, we will not force your child either."
I nodded in agreement, but my mother-in-law's words now became a burden for me. She was so eager to have grandchildren soon to be the successors of the company. The question now was whether I would get pregnant as soon as possible. I was very afraid that I couldn't fulfill Sean's mother's wish.
"You were an economics graduate, right, Leslie?"
I nodded because indeed, during college, I majored in economics. "Yes, Mom," I replied.
"That's good. Are you willing to work in my company? To help me run the company? Of course, your task will be in the financial field, given your expertise. Rather than looking for a job in another company. My company really needs you."
Accepting this invitation from my mother-in-law, could I possibly refuse it?
***
Seven months have passed since my marriage to Sean, and until now, there have been no signs that I am pregnant. It truly disturbs me and makes me often daydream alone. My heart is uneasy, and my mind is not at peace because I worry that I won't be able to give birth to a child for Sean and also a successor for Sean's mother's company. Although Sean, his mother, and my parents have never discussed this issue, my heart is still uncomfortable every time I think about it.
"Leslie."
I, who was daydreaming at my desk, instantly jerked when I heard a voice calling me. A voice that was not unfamiliar to me because its owner was Sean's mother. Actually, I was in the office because that night when Sean's mother invited me to work in her company, I immediately accepted it. I have been working in Sean's mother's company for six months, serving as the financial manager.
"Yes, Mom." I quickly stood up.
"Accompany me to meet with the bank representatives. There is something that needs to be discussed."
I nodded, of course, willing to accompany my mother-in-law. "Where is the meeting, Mom?"
"At the bank. We will go there now."
"Oh, alright."
I immediately followed my mother-in-law's steps as she walked ahead. Upon arriving at the designated bank, the meeting took place. Many things were discussed between Sean's mother and the bank employee, but my focus was not on their conversation, but on the figure of an old man hovering right behind the bank employee. From the name tag attached to his clothes, the employee's name was Randy. As for the old man behind him, of course, he was a ghost.
The ghost of the grandfather continued to stare at me, and I was sure he realized that I could see him. Then, suddenly, he approached me and said something to me. Yes, lately, many ghosts have been communicating with me directly, not by showing me their memories. When I discussed this with Angie, she said it was a sign that my abilities were getting stronger as I grew older.
"Alright, we have agreed, then. In that case, we'll take our leave."
My attention was diverted from the grandfather when I heard my mother-in-law concluding the conversation. It seemed their business was done, and we were getting ready to leave. However, I couldn't leave before conveying the message the grandfather entrusted to me.
"Hm, Mr. Randy, there's something I want to ask," I quickly said before my mother-in-law stood up from her seat. Their attention was now focused on me.
"Yes, please. What do you want to ask, ma'am?" Randy asked politely.
"Has anyone in your family recently passed away? Maybe your father or grandfather?"
Randy hesitated for a moment, perhaps surprised by my question. "Y-yes, my father passed away just a week ago. How do you know about my family's recent loss?"
"Because I've been seeing him floating behind you since earlier."
Randy widened his eyes, understandably shocked and confused like he is now.
"There's a message your father wants to convey. He entrusted his message to me."
"W-wait, I don't understand what you're saying."
"Believe Leslie's words." My mother-in-law also joined the conversation. "My daughter-in-law has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. She is an indigo. So, what she just said is that she saw your father's ghost who left a message for you. It's better for you to listen to Leslie because she doesn't lie. She speaks the truth."
Randy, who initially felt confused, seemed to start understanding. He nodded and seemed to begin to believe my words. "What's the message from my father?" he asked, looking curious.
"Didn't your wife want to buy a house because she's tired of living in the old house left by your father?"
Once again, Randy widened his eyes, repeatedly swallowing saliva.
"Your father knows everything even though you never told him anything. Your father said to sell the old house and buy a new one as your wife requested. Your father doesn't want to see both of you arguing again because of the house. Live peacefully and harmoniously with your wife."
Randy's eyes welled up with tears; he seemed to not expect that his father knew about what he had been hiding.
"But that house is full of memories, especially memories when your mother and father were still alive. How can I sell it and buy a new house?"
"Your father has let go of it. Besides, the house is old; it's time to leave it."
Randy's fists clenched tightly; he seemed reluctant to follow his father's message.
"You surely want your father to leave peacefully to the afterlife, right? You surely don't want to see your father continue to be a wandering ghost?"
Randy, who was bowing his head, instantly lifted it and looked at me. "Of course, I don't want my father to become a wandering ghost. I didn't even expect my father to become a wandering ghost now."
"That's because your father cannot find peace until he sees you living peacefully and harmoniously with your wife. Especially since the cause of your fights always involves the house. If you want your father to find peace and go to the afterlife, fulfill his wish."
"S-so I have to sell that house?"
I nodded without hesitation. "Yes, that's what your father wants. The house's certificate is kept in your father's room, under the bed. You take that certificate and sell the house. After that, buy a new house as your wife wishes. You must be happy and harmonious; your father doesn't want to see you argue again."
Randy couldn't hold back his sadness any longer; tears streamed down his face, and the sound of his sobbing was heartbreaking.
"You better follow Leslie's words. Believe me, this is for the good of your father, as well as for your own and your wife's good," my mother-in-law said, offering advice to Randy.
"Yes, I will sell the house if that's what my father wants and what can make him leave peacefully to the afterlife." Randy's gaze turned to me. "Thank you for delivering my father's message, ma'am."
"You're welcome. That's the only message your father entrusted to me."
After that, Randy bid farewell. His father's ghost always followed him, smiling at me before disappearing. I was sure the ghost would go to the afterlife once he saw Randy selling their house. I was happy to be able to deliver the ghost's message to his son.
"Your ability always helps many people. I am proud of you, Leslie."
I was truly startled to hear that, considering that Sean's mother had initially disapproved of my relationship with Sean because of this ability.
"Thank you, Mom," I said sincerely. Fortunately, now my mother-in-law could accept my ability and even say such words.
"Let's go. We're going back to the office."
Upon hearing my mother-in-law's invitation, I quickly stood up. That's when I felt something strange in my body. My head suddenly started to spin, and I staggered, almost falling. Thankfully, Sean's mother grabbed my hand just in time to prevent me from falling.
"What's wrong, Leslie? Your face is so pale."
I could see the worried expression on Sean's mother's face. However, I couldn't answer her question because after that, everything began to spin, and my surroundings turned pitch black. I lost consciousness. I had no idea what happened to me to make me like this.
