Selene sat in her office, staring out at the city skyline, her fingers drumming against the polished surface of her mahogany desk. She should have let it go, she should have ignored Aurora's sudden reappearance and continued with her life as if the past didn't still haunt her. But Selene was not the kind of woman who let things go. A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Without turning, she spoke. "Come in." The door opened, and Camille Devereaux stepped inside, her expression sharp with barely concealed frustration. She placed a tablet on the desk, folding her arms. "You made headlines." Selene sighed, rubbing her temples. "Let me guess, more speculation about my personal life?" Camille slid the tablet closer. "See for yourself." Selene picked it up, eyes narrowing at the photo plastered across the business news site. A candid shot from the gala of her and Aurora, standing too close, staring at each other with an intensity that left little to the imagination. The caption beneath it read: "Old Flames Reignite? CEO Selene Laurent and Heiress Aurora Sinclair Spark Rumors at High-Profile Gala." Selene's grip on the tablet got tightened. Camille sat across from her, crossing one leg over the other. "I assume this wasn't part of your plan?" Selene placed the tablet down with deliberate calm. "It was a mistake." Camille tilted her head. "Which part? The picture? Or the fact that you let her get close to you again?" Selene didn't answer. Camille leaned forward, her was voice quieter. "I don't like this, Selene. You spent five years turning yourself into the woman you are now and suddenly, she walks back in, and you're-" "I'm what?" Selene's tone was sharp. Her tone interrupted. Camille studied her, then sighed. "Distracted." Selene exhaled through her nose, pushing herself up from her chair. "I'm not distracted, I'm focused. Which is why I need to know everything." Camille raised an eyebrow. "About what?" Selene's gaze was cold. "Damian Rothschild and what the hell he meant last night." Camille held back, then pulled out her phone, scrolling through something before handing it to Selene. "You might want to sit down for this." Selene took the phone, her eyes scanning the document on the screen, it was a confidential business acquisition report and at the top of the file-Rothschild Corporation's proposed merger with Sinclair Industries. Selene's stomach twisted. Camille watched her reaction. "Damian is planning a full-scale takeover of Aurora's family business. Their marriage isn't just for love-if you even believe that. It's a power move." Selene's jaw tightened. "He wants control over the Sinclair empire." Camille nodded. "And if he gets it, he'll become untouchable in the corporate world. He won't just be your rival anymore, Selene. He'll be your greatest threat." Selene's mind raced. The implications were clear, if Damian succeeded, he would hold the power to challenge everything she had built. She had always known him to be ruthless, but this was a calculated warfare. Camille's voice was softer now. "And that's not the worst part." Selene glanced up. Camille hesitated. "Aurora doesn't own Sinclair Industries. Her father does and he's the one who arranged the engagement." Selene stilled. Camille continued. "Which means if she refused to marry Damian" Selene's breath caught. "She would lose everything." Camille nodded. "Exactly." Selene turned away, gripping the edge of her desk, trying to push back the wave of emotions threatening to rise. So that was it. That was why Aurora had walked, that was the reason she had left without an explanation. It wasn't just betrayal, it was a sacrifice. Selene forced herself to take a slow, steady breath. She needed to think, to plan and to counterattack. Her phone buzzed on the desk. She reached for it, expecting another news alert, but when she saw the name on the screen, she froze. Aurora Sinclair. Her fingers hovered over the screen for half a second before she answered. "What do you want?" A pause. Then Aurora's voice was soft and unreadable. "We need to talk." Selene's grip on the phone tightened. "I think we've said enough." But Aurora exhaled. "Not yet." Silence stretched between them. Then "I'm coming to your office," Aurora said. Selene's lips curled into a humorless smile. "That would be a mistake." Aurora's voice didn't waver. "Then stop me." The call ended. Selene stared at her phone, then set it down, exhaling through her nose. Camille watched her carefully. "Are you going to see her?" Selene rolled her shoulders back, her expression turning cold once more. "Let her come." She wasn't the same woman Aurora had left behind. This time she would be the one in control. An hour later, the doors to Selene's office swung open. Aurora walked in, her movements slow and deliberate, her presence disrupting the air like a brewing storm. Selene leaned back in her chair, her expression unreadable. "You're bold, I'll give you that." Aurora didn't respond. She stepped forward, closing the space between them, her golden eyes locked onto Selene's. "You're angry with me." Selene scoffed. "You think?" Aurora placed her hands on the desk, leaning in slightly. "You don't understand what I had to do." Selene met her gaze, her tone razor-sharp. "Then explain it to me." Aurora swallowed. "I-" The office door burst open. Both women turned as Damian Rothschild strode in, his smile sharper than ever. "Well," he said, his voice laced with amusement. "This is quite the reunion." Selene's pulse spiked. He shouldn't be here. Aurora tensed beside her, her hands curling into fists. Damian glanced between them, then slid his hands into his pockets. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important." Selene rose from her chair, her voice cold. "You don't belong here." Damian chuckled. "On the contrary. I think I do." Selene's eyes narrowed. "Why?" Damian smiled. "Because, my dear Selene, as of this morning. I just bought twenty percent of your company's shares." Selene's breath stopped. Damian's smile widened. "And that means we're going to be seeing a lot more of each other."
