The Cost of Disobedience
Selene's pulse pounded against her ribs, but she kept her breathing even though her expression was unreadable. Lucian had laid his trap, and now he was waiting.
His men stood just behind her, their presence was a silent reminder that this wasn't a negotiation but a demand.
Selene slowly turned back to Lucian, meeting his gaze with unwavering defiance. 'You think this is a choice," she said, her voice steady. 'But it's not."
Lucian's lips curved slightly, but there was no amusement in his eyes. 'Isn't it?" He leaned back in his chair, studying her like a puzzle he had yet to solve. 'You can either stand with me or against me and if you choose the latter…" His gaze darkened. 'I'll have to remind you why that isn't an option."
Selene's hands clenched at her sides, but she refused to let fear take root. 'You don't control me, Lucian."
Lucian sighed, shaking his head slightly. 'You're still holding onto that illusion." He gestured to the men behind her. 'Let's fix that." Before Selene could react, a sharp grip closed around her arm.
She twisted instinctively, jerking away from the hold, but the second man caught her, his grip unrelenting. They were faster and stronger and she had no chance of overpowering them.
Lucian remained seated, watching. 'You've always been a fighter," he murmured. 'That's what makes you so… fascinating." He nodded toward the door. 'Take her downstairs."
Selene struggled, her breath coming in sharp bursts as they dragged her toward the exit. 'Lucian–" He didn't even look at her and the men didn't slow, order had been given and they had to follow.
The hallway was colder and darker than before but Selene's mind worked furiously, searching for an opening, a moment of weakness she could exploit but there was nothing.
The men at her sides were trained, their movements precise and their grips iron-clad.
She gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stay calm because panicking wouldn't help her and she needed to think.
The corridor stretched on until they reached a heavy steel door, one of the men stepped forward, punching in a code on a keypad, a soft beep followed, and the lock disengaged with a low hum.
Selene's stomach clenched, she had been taking another room and there had to be a reason for that.
The door swung open and the men shoved her inside, the force of it nearly knocking her off balance but Selene caught herself at the last second, spinning around just as the door slammed shut behind her, and darkness swallowed the space.
Her breathing slowed as she let her eyes adjust. It wasn't a cell, but it wasn't far from one.
The room was bare with no windows, no furniture, just a single overhead light casting a dim glow against the concrete walls. The silence was heavy, pressing down on her chest. Lucian wasn't just imprisoning her. He was isolating her.
Selene exhaled through her nose, steadying herself; this had to be another of his games.
She turned, testing the door, trying her luck but it was locked, no surprise there. She scanned the room again, searching for anything she could use but nothing.
Selene let out a slow breath, if Lucian thought this would break her, then he was wrong.
Hours passed.
The silence became a dull hum in the back of her mind. Selene had always known Lucian's tactics and this one wasn't about control but he wanted her to feel pain and helpless, maybe she would break but she refused.
Her mind remained sharp, calculating every possible scenario. Escape wasn't possible right now, but that didn't mean she wouldn't find a way.
A soft click broke the silence. Selene's muscles tensed as the door unlocked and Lucian stepped inside. He didn't speak right away but his gaze swept over her, taking in every detail and looking for cracks.
Selene met his stare evenly. 'Is this the part where I'm supposed to beg?" Lucian smirked. 'Begging doesn't suit you."
He took a slow step forward, his presence filling the space. 'You've always been strong-willed," he murmured. 'It's what drew me to you." He tilted his head. 'But strength without purpose is wasted, Selene and right now, you're fighting a battle you can't win."Selene didn't look away. 'We'll see about that."
Lucian studied her for a moment before sighing. 'I don't enjoy this, you know." His voice softened just slightly. 'But you leave me no choice." Selene scoffed. 'There's always a choice."
Lucian stepped closer, his gaze darkening. 'Then make the right one." Selene exhaled slowly. 'And if I don't?" Lucian's lips curled into something colder. 'Then I will make it for you." He turned toward the door, pausing only briefly. 'I'll give you time to reconsider." The door shut behind him.
Selene closed her eyes for just a second, her mind racing; Lucian thought he was winning but she wasn't broken yet and she never would be.
