Trapped Between Shadows
The bullets ricocheted off the tunnel walls, sending sharp shards of rock and concrete flying through the air.
Selene ducked instinctively, dragging Caleb down with her while using her body to shield Axel.
The sound of gunfire echoed through the narrow space and the sharp cracks reverberated off the damp, crumbling stone.
The tunnel had been their one hope of escape, but now it felt more like a cage.
Caleb gritted his teeth as he pressed a hand to his wounded shoulder, his face twisted in pain. 'I thought you said this was a way out!" he growled, wincing as another bullet struck the wall just inches from his head.
Selene's mind was racing as they couldn't go back because the path behind them had collapsed under the weight of her desperate gamble against Lucian.
If he was still alive, he was buried under the rubble, but she couldn't count on that.
The only way was forward but their enemies were waiting.
Axel groaned beside her, his body was barely holding together and his breathing was weak, his skin pale, but he was still fighting to stay conscious.
Selene had never seen him so vulnerable, and it only fueled the fire inside her.
'We need to move." Her voice was firm, but she wasn't sure how they were going to make it out of this.
They had no weapons except for her knife, and Caleb's gun was nearly useless now that he was injured, they were outnumbered, outgunned, and running out of time.
The gunfire momentarily stopped, and in that eerie silence, Selene's instincts screamed at her; this could only mean one thing–they were repositioning and calculating their next move, setting traps and waiting for the perfect moment to close in.
She pressed her back against the rough wall, her breaths shallow. 'They're moving, we just have seconds."
Caleb gave her a knowing look. He understood because he'd been in situations like this before. This wasn't about winning, it was about surviving.
'I'll draw their fire. You get Axel out of here." Caleb's voice was steady, but there was something final about it.
Selene shook her head immediately. 'No. We're all getting out of this."
Before Caleb could argue, the tunnel suddenly filled with smoke.
Selene's eyes stung as the thick, acrid fog rolled in from the other end making the air turn heavy and suffocating.
She covered her mouth with her sleeve, trying not to choke on the smoke grenades.
They were forcing them into confusion, cutting off their vision, and then they would strike.
Selene reached out blindly, grabbing Axel's arm and pulling him against her. 'Stay with me."
She felt Caleb shift beside her. 'We need cover now."
Then through the dense smoke, she spotted a break in the tunnel wall—a maintenance hatch.
It was rusted and barely hanging onto its hinges, but it was their only chance.
She grabbed Caleb's arm and yanked him toward it. 'Here! Help me!"
Caleb didn't hesitate, together, they forced the door open just as the first set of footsteps pounded through the smoke.
Selene shoved Axel inside first, his body limped against her as she struggled to pull him forward. Caleb followed, and as soon as they were all through, Selene slammed the door shut behind them.
They were now in another tunnel–narrower and darker, lined with rusted pipes and flickering emergency lights, it wasn't much, but it was a lifeline.
Caleb exhaled sharply, leaning against the wall, his face contorted in pain. 'That won't hold them for long."
Selene scanned their surroundings but all she could see was the tunnel stretched ahead into darkness. 'Then we don't stop moving."
She hooked Axel's arm around her shoulder again and started forward. Caleb hesitated for a moment, his injured arm pressed against his ribs, but he followed.
Their footsteps echoed off the damp concrete as they pushed deeper into the passage. The air smelled of rust and stale water and the deeper they went, the colder it became.
Axel stirred slightly as his fingers weakly gripped her sleeve. 'Selene…" His voice was barely a whisper.
Selene's heart clenched. 'I'm here, just hold on." Axel's eyes fluttered, but he wasn't strong enough to speak again.
Caleb exhaled harshly beside her. 'If we don't find a way out soon, none of us are walking out of this alive."
Selene didn't respond, she knew that she just had to find a way before it was too late.
They continued forward, their bodies aching, their breaths labored and every step felt heavier, every movement slower then there was a sound; a low, metallic creak ahead of them.
Selene's pulse spiked, and then she stopped in her tracks, her grip tightening on Axel.
The sound came again, closer this time and Caleb shifted beside her, his body tensing. 'Someone's here."
Selene didn't hesitate, she pulled Axel into the shadows of the wall, pressing her back against the damp concrete, Caleb did the same, his breathing shallow as they listened.
The footsteps were slow and measured. Then, there was a voice. 'You should have taken your chances with Lucian." Selene's blood turned to ice.
The voice was deep and smooth but filled with something far more dangerous than anger; amusement.
But just then a silhouette appeared in the dim light ahead. It was tall, filled with confidence, and unbothered by the darkness.
Selene's breath caught in her throat trying to hold Axel tight.
Caleb's voice came in but barely a whisper. 'Who the hell is that?" Just then the figure stepped forward, his face finally coming into view and Selene realized, this was no ordinary man.
His eyes locked onto hers with a slow, knowing smile curling his lips.
'I've been waiting for this moment."
Selene's fingers clenched around the knife still in her grip while Caleb muttered under his breath. 'This just got worse, didn't it?"
But Selene didn't answer because she already knew they weren't escaping this without a fight.
