The Pursuit (Continued)
The sound of the SUV's engine grew louder, and for a moment, Selene thought her heart would stop. Another one.
The vehicle was too close. They couldn't outrun it, not on these narrow city streets.
The cold, suffocating fear crept back in but she shoved it aside as there was no time to feel fear now. There was only survival.
Axel's grip tightened on the steering wheel, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror but his expression remained calm.
The car's tires squealed as they took another sharp turn, the alleyways and side streets flashing past in a blur of motion.
'We need to lose them," Axel said, his voice taut with urgency.
'I know," Selene replied, her voice steady despite the rising tension in her chest.
She scanned the surroundings, trying to make sense of their options but there were no familiar streets now and it felt like every turn brought them closer to a dead end.
The SUV wasn't far behind and the flashing lights in the rearview mirror felt like they were closing in with each passing second.
'I'm running out of places to turn, Axel," she said, her voice sharp with frustration.
'Hold on," Axel muttered, swerving left. The car narrowly avoided a stack of crates but the SUV wasn't far behind.
Just as Selene thought the vehicle would catch up, Axel swerved again, sending them into a tight alley.
For a moment, the SUV hesitated before following but it wasn't fast enough as Axel pushed the accelerator down further, the engine roaring in protest.
'Keep going!" Selene shouted, her pulse racing.
But as the alley narrowed, the light at the end of it dimmed was clear that there would be no more room to run as they were nearing a dead end. A no escape point.
Axel's knuckles were white as he gripped the wheel, his jaw clenched in frustration.
'We're not going to make it. It's a trap," he said, the finality in his voice was clear.
Selene's gaze locked onto the rearview mirror again. The SUV had gained ground and it was coming fast.
She could already hear the roar of its engine, the sound of heavy tires eating up the asphalt. They were almost there.
'I won't give up," she said through clenched teeth. Not now. 'Keep driving!"
Aurora's voice broke through the tension. 'There's another turnup ahead! I can see it!"
Axel didn't hesitate, he turned the wheel sharply and the car's tires screeched as it slid around the corner.
The back end of the car slammed against a dumpster but Axel kept control, guiding them forward, and for a split second, it looked like they might escape but the sound of screeching tires told Selene they weren't out of the woods yet.
In the rearview mirror, she saw the SUV getting closer, the headlights blinding in the reflection.
The driver had gained on them faster than she'd hoped making their tail relentless.
Then, there was a sudden sound, the unmistakable click of a radio transmission, followed by a shout. Selene's breath hitched. Reinforcements.
'Axel, it's not just them," she said urgently. 'There's more behind us."
Axel's eyes widened in realization but he didn't break pace. 'Shit. They've got more men."
As the alleyway continued to narrow, Selene's mind raced. They had to get out of this, they had no choice but to push forward. But where?
The path ahead was blocked by several stacked crates and debris and there would be no way to make it through without causing an even bigger mess.
She looked around frantically, to the left and there! She saw a fire escape ladder leading up to the rooftops.
'Stop the car!" she shouted, barely giving Axel enough time to react.
Axel slammed on the brakes, the car screeching to a halt just inches from the debris blocking the alley. 'Selene, what are you—?"
Before he could finish his sentence, Selene was already out of the car, her hand reaching for the fire escape ladder.
She scrambled up it quickly, her muscles protesting but her focus laser-sharp.
She could hear Axel and Aurora behind her, their footsteps were close but she knew they didn't have much time.
As Selene reached the top, she turned and looked down at them. 'Come on! We don't have much time!"
Axel was right behind her, pulling Aurora up the ladder, and in moments, they were all on the roof.
Selene's eyes scanned the area and they were high above the street now, the city stretching out in every direction.
The SUV was still behind them, but it was too large to follow them up here.
Selene took a deep breath but the adrenaline didn't subside. They had to keep moving.
Axel looked over at her. 'We need a plan. We can't stay up here long."
Selene nodded, her mind racing. She had been in tight spots before, but this felt different.
There was something about this pursuit that didn't feel like the others. It wasn't just about getting away; it was about finding a way out of the game.
She glanced around, looking for any escape routes.
The rooftops stretched on, some of them higher than others but if they kept running, they would eventually corner themselves again.
'That building over there!" Aurora's voice cut through the tension as she pointed toward a nearby structure. 'It's a block over, we could jump and keep going."
The idea of leaping from rooftop to rooftop didn't seem like the best one but it was their only chance.
'We need to make it there," Selene said, her voice resolute. 'But we can't stop running."
Axel looked behind them, his face pale as he scanned the rooftops in the distance. 'There's too much open space, we won't make it."
'We don't have a choice," Selene said, locking eyes with him. 'We do this or they'll catch us."
Without another word, she began running, her feet pounding against the gravel roof.
She could hear Axel and Aurora following close behind, their footsteps steady but filled with urgency. They had no time to waste.
They reached the edge of the roof and Selene stopped, her breath catching in her throat.
The gap between the buildings wasn't too far but it was wide enough to make her hesitate.
'Selene!" Aurora's voice called from behind her. 'You're not going to—"
But before Aurora could finish, Selene sprinted forward, jumping off the edge of the building and leaping toward the next roof.
The wind rushed past her as she soared through the air, the world below a blur.
She landed with a heavy thud, barely managing to keep her balance, her knees buckled and she almost fell forward but she caught herself just in time.
She heard the others land behind her with the same heavy thud. They were safe for the moment but they couldn't stop now.
The sound of approaching footsteps from behind them sent a fresh wave of panic through Selene's chest.
She didn't have to turn around to know that the SUV was closing in and this time, they were running out of space.
