The Come Back
The silence after Lucian's words was deafening, it crawled into Selene's skin, settled into her bones, and pressed against her ribs like a cage tightening around her, she couldn't breathe and couldn't think.
The monitors in front of her flickered, displaying the two men who had fought beside her and suffered with her, and now one of them had to die. Axel, unconscious, slipping closer to death with every second, Caleb, restrained, his fate hanging by a thread.
Lucian stood before her with the embodiment of quiet control, his expression unreadable but his posture was speaking volumes. He knew exactly what he was doing, he was watching, waiting, and letting the weight of the decision crush her before she even spoke.
Selene's fingers trembled against her restraints, her voice, when she finally found it, was barely above a whisper. 'You can't make me do this."Lucian's smirk was slow but deliberate. 'You agreed to my terms, Selene, this is the price."
Her stomach twisted, this was more than proving loyalty, it was breaking and reshaping her into something unrecognizable.
Lucian stepped closer, his presence suffocating. 'You're wasting time, Axel is running out of it and Caleb–well, his odds aren't much better. So tell me, Selene… who dies?"
Selene's pulse pounded against her skull; think, find a way out, there had to be another answer, another way to…Lucian let out a small sigh, like a teacher disappointed in a slow student then he raised a hand, and a soft click echoed through the room.
The monitor displaying Caleb's cell changed and the camera zoomed in slightly as a man entered the room with a gun in his hand.
Selene's throat tightened and Lucian's voice was almost gentle now. 'I won't ask again, choose, or I choose for you."
Her breath came in short like a panicked burst, this wasn't just about loyalty, this was control and if she chose, she became him; someone who decided who lived and who died but if she didn't…her stomach lurched.
She forced herself to meet Lucian's gaze. 'Let Axel go." Lucian's brow lifted slightly as if she had mildly surprised him. 'Interesting Caleb?"
Selene's jaw clenched so hard that it hurt. 'You don't need him, he's not a threat to you, let him go, too."
Lucian laughed, the sound of it sent a wave of nausea through her, he shook his head like his amusement was genuine. 'Oh, Selene, you still don't understand, do you? It's never been about need, it's about power and now, I have yours."
He turned slightly, gesturing toward the screen, the man in Caleb's cell cocked the gun, and Selene's heart stopped. 'Last chance." Lucian's voice was edged with finality. 'Say the words, or I give the order."Selene couldn't speak then there was a sound, a deep, low beep from the monitor beside Axel's bed.
Selene's head snapped toward it and Axel was gone, the heart monitor spiked just barely, but enough but Axel wasn't as far gone as Lucian thought and that meant he still had a chance.
A plan crystallized in her mind, reckless and impossible, but it was the only move she had left then she turned back to Lucian, swallowing the bile rising in her throat while her voice came out cold. 'I choose me."
Lucian's smirk faltered for the first time. 'What?" Selene's chest rose and fell sharply with uneven breaths. 'You want to kill? Take mine, let them go."
Lucian's eyes flickered with something unreadable. 'Brave but pointless, if you die, they still die, you really think I'll let them walk free without my leverage?"Selene's stomach dropped.
Lucian's lips curled again. 'That's not how this works. I don't need you dead, Selene, I need you to understand that there is no escape, that this…" he gestured to the monitors, the restraints, the gun waiting in Caleb's cell, 'is the only thing that matters now."Selene's vision blurred with rage.
Lucian let the silence stretch, drinking in the moment then, he nodded toward the screen. 'Kill Caleb."
The gunshot shattered the room and Selene's scream tore through the air, her entire body jerked against the restraints, but the cold metal held her down as she watched helplessly and frozen but then, something was wrong.
The screen was dark, the monitor had cut out the second the shot rang out, Selene's breath was stalled but Lucian's smirk vanished instantly, he turned sharply toward the technician standing by the monitor panel. 'What happened?"
The technician's hands shook. 'I…I don't know, the feed just…cut off." Selene's heart pounded as she knew this wasn't Lucian's doing, something else was happening.
Lucian's jaw tightened, he pressed a button on his earpiece. 'Report, I want eyes on.." But the intercom exploded with static then a distorted, but clear enough-to-recognize voice came in.
Caleb. 'Miss me, Lucian?" Selene's breath hitched while Lucian's face darkened, his entire posture shifted from relaxed amusement to rigid fury. 'Find him. Now."
Selene's chest tightened, of course, it should. He was alive and not just alive he had broken free.
Just then a crackling sound echoed from the speakers, followed by the unmistakable roar of an explosion, and the entire building shook.
Lucian's head snapped toward the door, Selene's pulse spiked then, she heard gunfire, chaos had erupted beyond the other side of the walls.
Lucian turned back to her, his expression went from chilling to darkness with realization.'This was never just about survival, was it?" His voice was low and dangerous.
Selene's lips curled just slightly, Lucian had forced her into an impossible choice but he had underestimated one thing, she had never been alone.
Then the lights flickered and the room shuddered, then the power cut out and everything plunged into darkness.
