Chains Of Conviction
Selene's heart pounded against her ribs as Lucian's words settled over her like an iron weight. One choice. Her loyalty or Eve's suffering.
The air in the room felt heavier than before, thick with an invisible force pressing down on her, waiting for her response but the guards had held Eve firmly, their grips unrelenting, their expressions unreadable. Lucian had planned this moment meticulously, ensuring that there was no easy way out.
Eve's breathing was uneven, but her eyes never wavered. She wasn't pleading and wasn't asking Selene to surrender either, even when bruised and restrained, she radiated the same fire that had always burned between them. Selene clenched her fists, anger coiling in her stomach like a serpent waiting to strike.
Lucian exhaled softly, his patience thinning. 'I won't ask again, Selene." His voice was smooth, but there was steel beneath it. 'Make your choice."
Selene forced herself to remain still because rushing would accomplish nothing and giving in would destroy everything. She needed to think, to find a crack in Lucian's carefully constructed game.
She turned her gaze to Eve, searching for any sign of weakness, any silent plea but there was none. Eve had already made her decision, not to be used as a bargaining chip.
Selene inhaled deeply, her voice steady. 'You think this is about my choice," she said slowly. 'But it's not." Lucian arched his brow. 'Isn't it?"
Selene took a single step forward, closing the distance between them ever so slightly. 'You need me to surrender, you need me to bend, because without that, you don't win and you hate losing, don't you, Lucian?" Lucian chuckled softly, shaking his head. 'You're mistaken," he murmured. 'I don't lose, I adjust."
He turned slightly, gesturing toward one of the guards and the man immediately reacted, pulling Eve's arm back at an unnatural angle. A sharp crack echoed through the room as Eve clenched her teeth, refusing to scream.
Selene's vision blurred with fury. He was trying to push her, trying to shatter her control piece by piece.
Lucian's gaze flickered toward her, observing, waiting. He wanted to see how much it would take before she broke but Selene exhaled slowly, forcing the rage back down, locking it away for later. 'You need me," she murmured. 'That's your weakness."
Lucian studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he sighed. 'Perhaps I've been too gentle." He nodded again, and the guard responded without hesitation, bringing his elbow down against Eve's ribs but this time, Eve let out a strangled sound, her body jerking in pain.
Selene moved before she could think. Her body reacted purely on instinct, her fist connecting with the nearest guard's throat before she spun, kicking another square in the chest.
The sudden chaos shattered Lucian's illusion of control. Eve twisted, slamming her head back into the guard restraining her, using the moment to free herself. Selene grabbed a discarded weapon. Her movements were fluid, and her mind was already calculating every exit and every possible move.
Lucian stepped back, his expression calm but his eyes burning with darkness. This wasn't supposed to happen. Selene met his gaze, her breath steady despite the adrenaline rushing through her veins. 'You should've known better, Lucian," Lucian smirked, but there was no amusement behind it. 'Maybe." then the sound of reinforcements approaching cut through the moment.
Selene didn't hesitate, she grabbed Eve's wrist. 'Move." They bolted toward the exit, their movements sharp, and precise as Selene's mind worked furiously, adjusting and recalculating because they wouldn't get another chance like this so they had to make it out now.
Lucian's voice followed them, smooth despite the chaos. 'Run, then." A pause. 'But you won't get far." Selene didn't look back.
