The Hard Choice
Selene's fingers curled into fists as the weight of Lucian's demand settled around her like a cage made of iron.
The cold glow from the monitors behind him cast eerie shadows along the steel walls, their flickering images were a cruel reminder that everything was at stake.
Axel, barely holding on. Caleb, restrained and outnumbered, both waiting for a miracle that wasn't coming because Lucian stood between her and any hope of saving them, his sharp eyes watching her like a predator waiting for its prey to break, his patience was a quiet, measured thing like an unspoken threat that every wasted second brought Axel closer to death.
Selene's breath was shallow, her ribs aching from the tension coiling inside her, then she met Lucian's gaze, forcing herself to stay steady, even as her heart pounded like a war drum inside her chest. 'If I say yes, how do I know you'll keep your word?" Lucian's smirk was slow, amused. 'You don't but what other choice do you have?"His words sliced through her.
There was no way to trust him because Lucian had already broken one promise–shooting Axel after claiming he wouldn't, there was no reason to believe he wouldn't turn on her again but she was left with no other options then she stared at the screens again and saw Axel's body motionless beneath tangled wires and beeping monitors.
The steady hum of his weak heartbeat was barely audible through the speakers but it was a painful contrast to the rapid hammering of her own pulse.
She could fight back but she was restrained, outnumbered, and weaponless, she could stall for time, but Lucian would only tighten his grip.
She had one move left. Her jaw clenched as she slowly exhaled, then, in a voice that was steady, but edged with something dangerous, she spoke. 'I'll do it."
Lucian's smirk didn't change, but something in his posture did; like a hunter satisfied that the trap had sprung shut, he tilted his head slightly, considering her. 'Good choice." Selene's skin burned with the weight of those words as no choice had ever felt less like her own.
Lucian took a step forward, reaching into his coat and for a split second, Selene's breath hitched, her instincts screaming for her to brace for another blow or another betrayal but instead, he pulled out a key.
The metal glinted under the fluorescent lights as he twirled it between his fingers, his expression was unreadable. 'A deal is a deal, Selene, I am a man of my word." The irony of that statement almost made her laugh.
Lucian turned toward the monitors and pressed a button then the screen displaying Caleb flickered, the image cutting out for a brief moment before showing movement.
Selene tensed seeing that two of Lucian's men had entered the room where Caleb was held of which one of them reached for his restraints while the other held a gun steady at his head.
Selene's stomach twisted. Lucian was watching her closely now, searching for the slightest hint of hesitation or regret but Selene forced herself to stay silent, to not react as Caleb's bindings were removed, he staggered forward, exhaustion and injury weighing him down, but his expression was unreadable.
Then, one of the guards grabbed his arm, dragging him forward. Selene's jaw tightened, they weren't freeing him, instead they were moving him.
Lucian chuckled softly. 'You didn't think I'd just let him walk out of here, did you?" Selene clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. 'You said…" Lucian lifted a hand, cutting her off. 'I said I'd let him go and I will but not yet."
Her breath came sharp, ragged. 'Where are you taking him?" Lucian exhaled, almost bored now. 'That depends on you."His words sent a cold chill down her spine.
Lucian turned back to her, his gaze sharp as a blade. 'You want to save him? Then prove your loyalty, show me that you're not just saying the words but that you mean them."Selene's pulse hammered against her ribs because she knew what he was doing.
Lucian wasn't looking for obedience, he was looking for submission and she had given him her agreement, but that wasn't enough, now he wanted to break her.
Her mouth felt dry as she forced out her next words. 'What do you want me to do?"Lucian smiled–a slow, satisfied thing then he stepped closer, lowering his voice to a near whisper. 'Kill for me." Selene's blood ran cold.
The room felt smaller but Lucian didn't move, didn't even blink, he let the words settle, let them suffocate her.
Selene's fingers curled into trembling fists. 'Who?" Lucian's eyes gleamed. 'That's the best part, Selene, you get to choose." Her stomach twisted. 'What do you mean?"Lucian gestured lazily toward the screens. 'Caleb… or Axel." Selene froze.
The air rushed from her lungs while the world blurred at the edges as her mind reeled, trying to process the words.
Lucian's voice remained calm, almost gentle. 'Prove to me that you belong here, that you understand how things work, one of them lives, one of them dies and you get to decide which."
Her breath came too fast now, she stared at the monitors and saw Caleb, being dragged away to an unknown location. Axel, still unmoving, seconds from death without help.
Lucian watched her reaction with quiet amusement.'Choose, Selene, one, or the other."
The room spun, there was no right answer here because either way it was only loss. Her chest tightened, and for the first time since waking up in this cold, metal prison, she felt something she hadn't allowed herself to feel. Despair.
Lucian leaned in slightly, whispering one last time. 'Who dies first?"
