Fleeing The Shadows
The night air was thick with moisture that contained the scent of damp earth filling Selene's lungs as she pushed forward.
The forest stretched endlessly with towering trees casting long shadows beneath the sliver of moonlight that managed to pierce through the canopy, every step was a battle against exhaustion and every breath was a reminder of the pain coursing through her body.
Caleb was ahead, gripping Axel tightly as they moved due his injuries were slowing him down, but he never stopped, Axel's weight sagged against him, he was barely conscious and his breathing was uneven.
The bullet wound had weakened him dangerously, and Selene could feel the urgency clawing at her with every passing second.
Behind them, the facility was still burning and the glow of the fire flickered through the trees, illuminating the destruction they had left behind. The explosion had bought them time, but not enough as Lucian would definitely come.
Selene knew that this wasn't over so her grip on the gun tightened as she forced herself to move faster but the adrenaline that had carried her this far was fading, replaced by the numbing ache of injuries she couldn't afford to acknowledge.
Her shoulder burned from where the bullet had grazed her, and her legs screamed in protest with every uneven step, but she refused to slow down.
The terrain grew rougher the deeper they went and the thick roots were jutted from the ground, hidden beneath layers of dead leaves and mud with the tree branches reaching out like skeletal fingers, clawing at their skin as they ran.
The sounds of the night surrounded them; rustling leaves, distant animal calls, the eerie whisper of the wind through the trees.
Selene glanced back, she could still see the fire, but the sounds of pursuit had faded that didn't mean they were safe, it only meant Lucian was waiting for the right moment.
Caleb's voice came in tight with strain. 'We need to stop." Selene hesitated, her instincts were screaming against it, but she knew he was right and Axel wouldn't last if they didn't attend to his wounds soon.
She scanned the area, searching for any form of shelter, the entire forest was dense, but up ahead, the land sloped downward, revealing a rocky outcrop, and beyond it was a small clearing opened beneath the twisted roots of an old tree, it wasn't much, but it would give them cover.
'Over there," she said, her voice hoarse, Caleb didn't argue as they moved quickly toward the clearing with each of their steps slower than the last but by the time they reached the shelter of the overhanging roots, Axel was barely conscious.
Selene knelt beside him, pressing her fingers against his wrist, his pulse was weak but steady while his skin was clammy and his breaths shallow, they had stopped the bleeding back at the facility, but without proper care, he wouldn't last.
Caleb lowered himself onto the ground, pressing a hand against his ribs, his face was pale and his body was tense with pain. 'We need supplies, something, anything to keep him stable."
Selene swallowed hard but they had nothing; no medical kits, no water, no food, just a gun with limited ammunition and the clothes on their backs.
Caleb exhaled sharply. 'I can go." But Selene shook her head. 'You're in no condition to move." His expression hardened. 'Neither are you." But she didn't stop, she clenched her jaw, glancing toward the forest. 'We don't have a choice."
Silence settled between them as the weight of reality pressed down, suffocating, then, they heard a soft snap of a branch sound.
Selene's body tensed, and Caleb's gaze flicked toward the trees while his fingers twitched toward the gun at his side. The forest had been still a moment ago, but now the shadows felt deeper and heavier.
Selene slowly rose to her feet with her gun raised and her heartbeat thundered in her ears then another sound but this time it was a whisper of movement, a flicker of flashlights caught her eye through the trees, Lucian's men had found them.
Caleb gritted his teeth, adjusting his grip on his weapon. 'How many?" Selene narrowed her eyes, tracking the movement. 'At least four."Too many to take head-on, especially in their condition as they were barely holding themselves together.
Caleb exhaled, his voice low. 'We have to move." Selene looked at Axel, he was barely conscious, his body was too weak to keep going so moving him now would only make it worse but she had to make a choice.
Her grip on the gun tightened. 'You stay with Axel. I'll lead them away." Caleb's eyes widened 'That's suicide." But Selene didn't waver. 'It's the only way."
She turned before he could argue, slipping into the darkness of the trees and the moment she moved, she felt the weight of their fate resting on her shoulders but she didn't hesitate as she fired a single shot into the air, the effect was immediate, the flashlights shifted and Lucian's men voices rising in alarm.
She ran through every branch toring at her skin as she sprinted deeper into the woods, the pain in her shoulder flared with every movement, but she pushed forward as the sound of pursuit followed her footsteps crashing through the undergrowth.
She kept going, zigzagging through the trees, making herself an impossible target and the gunfire that followed was wild, missing her by inches, but she didn't stop as her target was to keep them away from Axel while she had to survive.
The ground beneath her shifted as the forest sloped downward making her feet slip and the mud give way beneath her, she stumbled, catching herself just before she fell, her breath ragged then, a sharp pain; a bullet tore through her side.
Selene gasped, her vision blurring as blood began to seep through her shirt, she buckled on her knees, but she forced herself to stay upright.
But a figure moved ahead of her and stepped from the trees with the gun raised before she could react and she barely had time to lift her weapon before a voice cut through the night. 'Drop it." Selene froze.
The man standing before her wasn't just another soldier, it was Lucian.
Her breath caught in her throat, he had come himself with his usual unreadable expression, but there was something almost satisfying in the way he looked at her, like he had always known this would happen.
Selene's fingers trembled around the trigger, she had one shot left. Lucian tilted his head slightly. 'You've run far enough, Selene."
Her grip tightened, and Lucian's smirk returned. 'But this time, there's no escape."
