The Collapse
The room felt like it was closing in on Selene, she could feel her heart pounding in her chest and the weight of the situation pressing down on her like a physical force.
She could barely process what was happening as Axel tried to steady himself, wincing in pain from the rubble that had pinned him down earlier.
The gunshots, the explosions, and the chaos had all led to this moment and now, the world around them felt like it was collapsing.
The figure in the doorway—the one who had been watching them was still there.
His eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, it was as if the air between them thickened.
Selene could feel the tension like a sharpness in his gaze that made her throat tighten but she didn't have time to analyze his every move.
'What do you want from us?" Selene asked, her voice was a mix of frustration and defiance.
She refused to be intimidated and couldn't afford to let fear take over.
The man in the doorway didn't answer immediately. He simply stepped forward, his movements deliberate and slow.
There was no rush, no sense of urgency in the way he moved. It was as if he knew they had nowhere to go, that they were trapped in this room with no way out.
'It's not about what I want, Selene," the man said, his voice low, almost detached. 'It's about what's coming."
Her mind raced, what was coming? She could feel the danger creeping closer and the pressure mounting with every passing second.
There was no escape, not with the way the men had surrounded the building, not with the walls closing in around them.
She could almost hear the footsteps, and feel the presence of more enemies just beyond the door.
'You're running out of time," the man continued, his voice cutting through the silence. 'There's no way out now, you're part of this, whether you like it or not."
His words felt like a punch to the gut. Part of this and what was he talking about? She had been running, trying to survive, but what did he mean by this? Who was pulling the strings?
Axel, still struggling to stay on his feet, looked at Selene with urgency in his eyes.
'We need to move, Selene." His voice was strained, his body weak but the desperation was clear. 'They're coming."
Selene glanced toward the door again, her senses alert.
She could feel the tension in the air, thick with anticipation.
They were being watched and surrounded, and it felt like the walls were slowly caving in.
The figure in the doorway stepped aside but his eyes were never leaving Selene.
His movement was subtle, but it was enough to show her that he wasn't going to let them go.
'There's nowhere to run," he said, his words like a final warning. 'It's too late for that."
A cold chill ran down Selene's spine as she heard the sound of footsteps approaching from behind.
The door at the end of the room slammed open, and more men stepped inside.
Their faces were masked, their bodies clad in black tactical gear.
They didn't say a word, but the presence of so many armed men was enough to make Selene's breath catch in her throat.
They were surrounded and there was no way out.
The figure in the doorway stepped closer, his eyes now locked on Selena with a cold, calculating gaze. He wasn't just standing there anymore but was closing in, like a predator circling its prey.
'You're not leaving here," he said, his voice unwavering. 'Not unless I say so."
Selene's mind raced. She couldn't think, couldn't process everything at once.
She had no backup, no plan, and with Axel injured, they were alone with the walls around them shrinking with every passing second, and her chest tightened with the weight of it all.
But then just as she thought they were done then something happened.
The sound of shuffling footsteps echoed in the distance, followed by a loud bang.
The door to the building was thrown open with force, and a group of men burst in from the other side of the room.
They weren't wearing tactical gear, their clothes were civilian, but the look in their eyes was just as cold but they were here for a reason, and it wasn't just to watch.
'Get them out of here now." A voice, commanding and authoritative, broke through the chaos.
The man who spoke had a calm, confident tone, but there was an edge to it that made Selene's stomach churn.
The men in black turned toward the new arrivals, their eyes narrowing as they assessed the situation.
The tension in the room was palpable like a live wire stretched too thin. No one moved at first, everyone seemed to be waiting for someone else to make the first move.
'What's going on here?" the new voice asked again, more forcefully this time.
The man in the doorway, still standing between Selene and the exit, didn't flinch. 'They're not going anywhere."
But before another word could be said, the sound of a loud explosion echoed from somewhere deep within the building.
The force of the blast rattled the walls, shaking the entire room and for a brief moment, everything seemed to go still. The lights flickered, and then chaos.
The men in black immediately reached for their weapons, but it was too late.
A second explosion rocked the building, sending a wave of debris flying through the air, the lights went out, plunging the room into darkness.
In the chaos, Selene's instincts took over. She grabbed Axel's arm, pulling him toward the far side of the room, but the noise and confusion made it impossible to hear anything.
The smoke from the explosions filled the air, choking her as she moved.
Where were the men in black? Where were the new arrivals?
In the distance, she heard the sounds of screams and footsteps and the unmistakable signs of more men charging through the building but the darkness was so thick that she couldn't see them coming.
She had no idea what was going to happen next.
'We need to go." Axel's voice was barely audible above the din of the collapsing building. 'Now."
Selene didn't need to hear anymore as she pulled him along, her body moving on autopilot as the sounds of destruction filled the air.
There was no plan or escape route, only instinct guiding her, and then just as she thought they might make it another loud crash echoed from above, and the ceiling began to cave in.
