The Unseen Hand
Selene's heart pounded as her feet slapped against the pavement, the sound of her breath heavy was in her ears.
The words from the figure still echoed in her mind, each one heavier than the last. 'You can't outrun your destiny, Selene. It's already decided."
The sensation of being trapped and of being cornered clung to her like a heavy cloak.
Destiny? What did that even mean? She had never believed in fate, not the way people talked about it.
She believed in choices, in actions and consequences but now, after everything, it felt like her every move had already been mapped out for her, as though she were nothing but a player in someone else's game.
Her breathing grew ragged as she pushed herself harder, her body aching with every step, she couldn't stop, not now, not when everything was at stake.
Behind her, the sound of the car's engine grew louder, the roar of it cutting through the still night air.
They were gaining on her, the figure had warned her, but she hadn't been prepared for the reality of the chase.
They hadn't given her time to think, to react, or to understand what was really happening.
Selene rounded a corner, her shoes skidding on the wet pavement as she nearly lost her balance.
Her hands shot out to steady herself against the building beside her, the brick rough under her palms but she didn't dare to stop.
The street ahead was blocked by a row of parked cars, but there was an opening between them, an alleyway that led deeper into the city.
Without a second thought, Selene turned sharply into it, her legs burning, but she pushed forward, she could hear the engine of the car turning, following her.
Every instinct told her she couldn't keep running, she couldn't keep avoiding them and this had to end.
She turned again, weaving between the parked cars, heading toward another street.
The sound of tires screeching on the road echoed in the distance as the car followed closely, relentlessly.
She couldn't see the driver's face, but she could feel the predator's eyes on her, like a hawk stalking its prey.
Then, the night was shattered by a loud screeching; not from the car, but from something in front of her but she barely had time to react.
A figure appeared from the shadows, blocking her path but before she could stop, she collided with them, stumbling backward.
The impact sent a shockwave of pain through her chest, the wind was knocked out of her lungs, and she struggled to keep her footing, her head spinning.
'Not so fast." The voice was familiar, cold, and commanding, it was the same man, the one who had been following her.
Selene's pulse hammered in her ears. How? How had he gotten here so quickly? He was everywhere, always one step ahead and always too close.
She tried to push herself back onto her feet, but he was standing between her and her escape.
He didn't speak immediately but his gaze was locked on hers, and for a moment, it felt like he was assessing her, studying her every move.
Then, his lips curled into a small, knowing smile. 'You've been running a long time, Selene but you can't outrun this."
She didn't have time for his games anymore so without thinking, Selene drew her gun, pointing it straight at him.
Her hands were steady, her breath ragged, but she couldn't afford hesitation.
'Step aside," she demanded, her voice cold, her gaze unflinching but the man didn't move, instead, he raised his hand slowly, his fingers flicking in a dismissive gesture.
'It's over." His voice was smooth, unwavering, almost like he was speaking from a place of inevitability. 'You can't escape what's already been set in motion, none of you can."
'Who the hell are you?" Selene demanded again, the desperation leaking into her voice, thou she wasn't afraid, she had to understand, why was he doing this.
His eyes flickered toward the gun, then back to her face. 'I'm just the one who makes sure things run according to plan."
Before she could respond, there was a loud clatter behind them; the footsteps of more of them.
The sound of sirens in the distance grew louder and closer but Selene didn't look back, she didn't care.
The figure had blocked her path, and she knew she had only one chance then she aimed the gun at him, her finger on the trigger.
And then, just as she was about to fire, the world around her exploded.
A massive crash tore through the alley as the streetlights above shattered in a shower of sparks making the entire block tremble as something huge, something powerful, slammed into the ground.
For a moment, everything went dark, the ground shifted under her feet, and the sound of gunfire, tires screeching, and the loud thrum of engines drowned out everything else and the man before her wasn't standing anymore.
Everything seemed to happen in a blur, the world spun around her, the lights flickering as everything around her came to life in bursts of sound and color but amidst the chaos, one thought cut through her mind, they weren't alone anymore.
She tried to regain her balance, her mind spinning, but before she could move, a shadow passed over her, blocking the light.
Another figure, this one was different, it was larger and more menacing.
The figure loomed over her, casting a shadow so wide that it seemed to consume the alley. It was a person, but it felt like something else.
A machine or a monster? She couldn't tell but the thing she knew for sure? This person wasn't here to talk.
'Move!" The new figure shouted, their voice booming over the chaos, and before Selene could react, they grabbed her by the arm, yanking her forward.
The sudden movement made her stumble, but she didn't have time to think, she had to move but to where? She didn't know.
The figure didn't stop, didn't even pause, they dragged her toward the nearest street, where the blinding headlights of more cars shone through the night, approaching quickly.
Selene struggled to keep up as she was pulled forward, but the figure was far stronger, pulling her with little effort.
The sirens continued to blare, and for a second, Selene thought they might make it, she might make it out alive but just as they reached the street, she heard a voice; loud and sharp, filled with fury.
'Get back here!"
