Silent Rebellion
Selene sat motionless, her wrists still bound by the cold metal cuffs, her mind working through every possible scenario.
The weight of Lucian's presence had only just left the room, but his words still lingered in the air like a suffocating fog.
He believed he had her where he wanted, helpless, controlled, and defeated but he had underestimated her before, and he was making that same mistake again.
Her gaze flickered toward the heavy door that had closed behind him. The lock had clicked firmly into place, sealing her in like a prisoner in a gilded cage.
The luxury of the room was an insult, a carefully curated illusion meant to strip away the reality of her captivity but the chains around her wrists told the real story. She wasn't here as a guest but as a possession.
Selene inhaled slowly, steadying herself because panic wouldn't help her and fear wouldn't get her out and she had learned long ago that escaping Lucian required more than brute force, it required patience, calculation, and a willingness to play the game just long enough to tip the odds in her favor.
Her fingers flexed against the cuffs, testing their resistance. The metal was solid and unyielding, but it wasn't unbreakable.
A noise outside the door made her freeze, footsteps were approaching, Selene straightened, her expression carefully blank as the handle turned.
The door swung open, and a man stepped inside, not Lucian, but one of his men. His build was broad, his posture rigid, his eyes void of anything but obedience. He didn't speak right away, merely assessing her as if deciding whether she was a threat even in chains.
Selene met his gaze evenly, refusing to shrink beneath his scrutiny.
'The boss wants you cleaned up," he said finally, his voice rough, indifferent. 'You'll come without a fight, or I'll make you." Selene's jaw tightened, but she didn't argue.
The man stepped forward, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a key. A soft click sounded as he unlocked the cuffs, but even as the metal slid away, Selene knew better than to mistake this for freedom.
She was still in Lucian's world, and every move she made was being watched.
The man stepped back, gesturing toward the door. 'Move."
Selene rose to her feet, rolling her wrists subtly to ease the stiffness, but she didn't hesitate because defiance would only get her punished right now.
She needed to wait. She stepped past the threshold, her gaze sweeping the hallway in a single, calculated glance. The corridor was empty except for two additional guards standing at the far end, a reminder that there would be no easy escape.
She allowed herself to be led down the hallway, her steps even controlled.
The air was crisp with the scent of polished wood and expensive cologne, every detail of the space meticulously curated to reflect Lucian's need for dominance. Nothing was out of place. Nothing was left to chance.
The man stopped in front of a door and pushed it open without ceremony. 'Inside."
Selene stepped in cautiously, her gaze sweeping the room, a bathroom, but not just any bathroom.
It was opulent, pristine, designed for comfort rather than necessity. Steam curled from the surface of the filled bathtub, the scent of lavender lingering faintly in the air.
A set of fresh clothes had been placed neatly on a chair in the corner, another silent demand wrapped in the illusion of choice.
The man didn't enter. He simply stood at the threshold, watching her with mild disinterest. 'Ten minutes," he said. 'Make it quick." Selene didn't respond as he pulled the door shut behind her and the lock clicked into place.
Her fists clenched at her sides. Even here, she wasn't truly alone.
She took a steadying breath and turned toward the mirror above the sink. The reflection staring back at her was a stranger.
Dark strands of hair had fallen loose around her face, her skin pale from exhaustion, but her eyes still burned with something Lucian would never be able to take from her.
Selene stepped toward the tub, dipping her fingers into the water. It was too hot; another silent message, Lucian's way of reminding her that even her comforts were dictated by him but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of thinking she cared.
She shed her ruined clothes, stepping into the water with careful precision. The heat stung at first, but she welcomed it, at the moment pain was better than numbness. It reminded her that she was still here and still fighting.
She didn't linger. Ten minutes. She wouldn't give them an excuse to drag her out.
Once dressed, she ran her fingers through her damp hair, shaking off the lingering exhaustion. She had barely secured the last button of the simple blouse when the door opened again and Lucian stood in the doorway.
Selene's spine straightened instinctively, her body bracing for whatever he had planned next.
Lucian's gaze swept over her, slow, assessing. 'Better." But Selene said nothing.
Lucian stepped further inside, shutting the door behind him. 'I was hoping our reunion would be under better circumstances," he mused, his voice deceptively light. 'But you never did make things easy for me."
Selene lifted her chin. 'I don't exist to make things easy for you."
Lucian chuckled, the sound smooth but laced with something colder. 'No, you exist to challenge me, don't you?" He reached out, brushing a damp strand of hair away from her face before she could flinch away. 'It's what makes you so… fascinating."
Selene swallowed the revulsion curling in her stomach. He wanted a reaction. He was always waiting for one but she wouldn't give him what he wanted.
Lucian exhaled slowly, letting his hand drop. 'You'll be staying here until I decide otherwise," he said, his voice shifting into something more final. 'There's no running or bargaining and there will be no false hope of escape." His eyes darkened. 'This is your reality now."
Selene held his gaze, unwavering. 'You don't get to decide my reality."
Lucian's smirk didn't falter, but something sharpened in his expression. 'You'll learn," he murmured. 'One way or another."
A soft knock at the door interrupted the moment, and Lucian sighed as if mildly inconvenienced. He stepped back, adjusting the cuffs of his sleeves before turning toward the door. Selene exhaled quietly, steadying herself.
Lucian glanced back at her once more before stepping outside. 'We'll talk soon." The door closed behind him, leaving Selene alone once more.
She turned toward the mirror, staring at the woman who refused to break. Lucian thought he had won but the game wasn't over yet.
