Testing Her Limit
The soft hum of the ventilation system filled the silence of the room, steady and constant, a reminder of the unseen forces controlling every breath Selene took.
She stood near the edge of the bed, the cool metal of the hairpin pressed against the inside of her palm, it's small, fragile, yet powerful in the right hands.
Her gaze swept over the walls to the thick steel door and the perfectly placed security cameras nestled in the corners.
No prison was flawless and Lucian had underestimated her before, it would happen again just then a sharp knock echoed through the room and Selene slipped the pin into the cuff of her sleeve, her expression was unreadable as she turned toward the door and a second later, it unlocked with a soft click, swinging open with an eerie slowness.
Lucian stood in the doorway, he was dressed in a tailored black suit, crisp and perfect as if he hadn't spent the night orchestrating her capture, the arrogance in his posture, the confidence in his stride made her stomach twist.
'Walk with me," he said, his voice smooth, casual as if she had a choice but Selene didn't move at first.
The defiance in her eyes flickered for only a moment before she forced her body forward, each step controlled and measured as the two guards standing just outside watched her closely, their presence was a silent warning, Lucian wasn't taking any chances.
The hallway was dimly lit, the scent of polished wood and expensive cologne lingering in the air and Selene memorized every detail as they moved; every door, every camera, and every possible exit.
Lucian walked beside her, relaxed, his hands tucked into his pockets. 'You're adjusting better than I expected." Selene kept her face blank. 'I don't recall agreeing to adjust," Lucian smirked. 'Give it time."
She swallowed the retort burning on her tongue because engaging in his games wouldn't help her then they turned to a corner, stepping into a vast open space lined with bookshelves and marble floors. A lounge, elegantly furnished, with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the estate's garden, it was an illusion of freedom.
Lucian gestured toward the seating area. 'Sit." But Selene didn't move.
Lucian's expression remained pleasant, but his gaze darkened slightly. 'I wasn't asking."
Her pulse quickened, but she refused to show hesitation and slowly, she moved toward the chair nearest to her, lowering herself onto the plush cushion.
Lucian took the seat across from her, his posture relaxed, but his eyes never left her.'You surprised me, Selene." She raised a brow. 'That must be difficult for a man who thinks he knows everything."
Lucian chuckled, amused by her defiance. 'Oh, I know plenty, for example, I know you haven't eaten since you arrived, I know you haven't slept, not really and I know," he leaned forward slightly, 'that you're looking for weaknesses."Selene's breath slowed, he had been watching and studying her.
Lucian's lips curled. 'You're predictable, always searching for a way out, always planning, even when the odds are stacked against you." He tilted his head. 'Tell me, does it ever get exhausting?" Selene met his gaze, her voice calm. 'Not as exhausting as keeping people locked in cages."
Lucian exhaled, shaking his head. 'I don't expect you to understand yet but you will." Selene leaned back slightly. 'I wouldn't hold my breath."
Lucian's amusement remained, but there was something sharper beneath it; a warning, then the door behind them opened and Selene turned slightly as Eve entered, carrying a tray with two glasses of wine rested on top, the deep red liquid swirling with every step she took, like she was performing.
Eve set the tray between them, her expression was unreadable, with no words or acknowledgment.
Lucian lifted one of the glasses, swirling the liquid before taking a slow sip. 'You must be thirsty." But Selene didn't move, Lucian smirked. 'Ah, still convinced I'm trying to poison you?" She kept her voice even. 'I wouldn't put it past you."
Lucian leaned back, swirling his glass thoughtfully. 'Trust isn't given, I understand that it's earned and I have every intention of earning yours." Selene scoffed. 'By keeping me locked up?"
Lucian exhaled, his fingers tapping against the glass. 'By showing you that fighting me is a waste of energy." He lifted his gaze. 'You're smart, Selene, smarter than most but intelligence without strategy is reckless." Her stomach twisted, but she didn't let it show, he wanted to break her.
Lucian leaned forward slightly. 'You've already lost, whether you admit it or not, you're here and Caleb is gone, your life, as you knew it, is over."
Selene's fingers curled slightly against the armrest, her pulse was steady despite the storm building inside her and she knew he was testing her and also watching for cracks.
She lifted her chin. 'And yet, here you are, trying to convince me, it sounds like you're the one who's afraid." For the first time, Lucian's smirk faltered and it lasted only a second, but Selene saw it then, just as quickly, his expression smoothed. 'You think you can get under my skin?"
Selene smiled, slow and deliberate. 'I think I already have."Lucian exhaled through his nose, his patience wearing thin then he lifted the second glass, holding it out to her. 'Drink." But Selene didn't move.
Lucian's voice dropped lower. 'Drink it, Selene or I'll make you." The challenge in his eyes sent a chill down her spine, he wanted control and he always thrived on it.
Selene reached forward, her fingers wrapping around the glass and the liquid inside shimmered under the dim lighting, deep red, rich, expensive, she lifted it slightly.
Lucian was watching and waiting for her to drink but Selene held his gaze and then, she let the glass slip from her fingers.
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the room, the dark liquid spilling across the floor like blood.
Lucian's jaw tightened, his fingers tapping against the armrest duo he hadn't expected.
Selene's voice was soft, steady. 'I guess we'll never know if it was poisoned." Silence stretched between them.
Eve, standing by the door, remained still.
Lucian exhaled slowly, his expression was unreadable then, he chuckled, low and dark. 'I see." He rose from his seat, straightening his cuffs. 'I can be patient, Selene." His eyes gleamed. 'But I don't recommend testing how long that patience lasts."Selene remained seated, her heartbeat steady.
Lucian turned to Eve. 'Take her back." Eve nodded once and stepped forward but Selene didn't resist as she was led back toward the door, her body calm, her expression neutral.
She had won this round but as she stepped into the hallway, Lucian's voice followed her. 'Enjoy your solitude while you can."
Selene didn't look back as she walked with purpose and each of her steps was a quiet reminder that this wasn't over.
