No Safe Haven
The silence inside the cabin was thick, pressing against Selene's skin like an unseen force as the door handle twisted ever so slightly.
The metallic scrape of the latch shifting sent a ripple of unease down her spine. They had been found and there was no question about it.
Someone was outside, waiting, testing the door as if gauging whether or not they would be able to slip inside without resistance.
Eve was already in position, her back against the wall beside the door, her body coiled with tension like a spring ready to snap.
Her hand hovered near the knife she had tucked into her waistband earlier, her breathing controlled and measured.
Selene could see the calculation in her eyes, the quiet assessment of whether or not they should attack first or wait for the intruder to make the next move but neither option was ideal.
Selene tightened her grip on the rusted hunting knife she had found earlier, the weight of which was unfamiliar but necessary. Her palms were damp, not from fear, but from the sheer anticipation of what was about to happen.
They were out of options and if whoever was outside managed to get in, there would be no running and no slipping into the night unnoticed.
This wasn't Lucian's estate, where they had walls and corridors to maneuver through, this was a single-room cabin, a trap with no exits.
The handle twisted again, harder this time as if the person outside had made up their mind. A soft breath, barely audible, escaped Eve's lips, and Selene knew they were thinking the same thing. Whoever it was–Lucian's men or someone else–they weren't leaving.
Then, just as suddenly as the movement had started, it stopped.
A long silence stretched between them, the only sound was the faint rustling of wind against the wooden walls.
Selene's pulse pounded, every second stretching into eternity, was the intruder second-guessing their approach, or had they realized that their presence had already been detected?
Eve shifted, her fingers brushing against Selene's arm briefly in silent communication; stay ready. Selene exhaled slowly, steadying her grip.
Then a sharp knock. The sound was deliberate, not frantic or rushed, but controlled.
Selene's chest tightened; Lucian. She didn't need to hear his voice to know because this was his way of telling them he was still in control, still watching, still pulling the strings even when they thought they had slipped free.
Eve tensed but didn't move, her body still pressed against the wall. The knock came again, this time a little softer, almost mocking in its rhythm.
Selene forced herself to breathe. He wasn't coming in, not yet. He was waiting, watching to see what they would do. This was a game to him.
A third knock then a long, drawn-out silence. Selene strained her ears, listening for footsteps, for any indication that he had left but there was nothing. No movement, no fading sound of retreating boots on the dirt outside, just stillness.
Eve exhaled softly, her voice barely above a whisper. 'He's not leaving." Selene nodded once, gripping the knife tighter. 'I know."
Another beat of silence then, a low voice, smooth as silk, cut through the night. 'Selene." Her stomach twisted at the sound of her name.
Lucian didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. His presence alone was enough to command attention, even without seeing him, she could picture the way he stood just beyond the door—composed, confident, utterly sure that he had already won.
'I was hoping you'd run a little farther," he mused as if they were discussing something as casual as the weather. 'But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised you always did like to make things difficult."
Selene swallowed against the lump in her throat but said nothing. A soft chuckle followed. 'Nothing to say? That's unlike you." Still, she refused to speak.
He was baiting her, waiting for a reaction but she wouldn't give him one.
Lucian sighed dramatically. 'Well, that's disappointing but it doesn't matter." A slight pause then, 'We both know how this ends." Selene clenched her jaw.
Lucian continued, his voice steady. 'You walk out of that cabin, and we do this the easy way or…" His tone darkened ever so slightly, the unspoken threat hanging in the air. 'I come in, and we do it my way."
Eve shifted slightly beside her, adjusting her stance, but she remained silent. They both knew there was no ‘easy way' with Lucian.
Selene finally found her voice, keeping it steady despite the storm brewing inside her. 'You let me go once. Why come after me now?"
Lucian's chuckle was quiet, almost amused. 'You should know by now, Selene. I don't let things go." Selene's fingers curled against the knife handle. 'That's your problem, then."
A beat of silence then the sound of retreating footsteps but Selene didn't relax. It was too easy.
Eve shot her a questioning glance, but Selene shook her head, her eyes still locked on the door. Lucian never left without a reason.
The silence stretched on for another minute then a loud bang against the door.
Selene barely had time to react before the wood splintered inward.
Eve moved first, shoving Selene back as she lunged toward the door, knife raised. The impact was so deafening that the force of the intrusion shook the cabin walls.
Selene's breath caught as she stumbled back, her body colliding with the cot behind her. The door had been kicked in and the wooden frame was barely holding together.
A figure stepped inside, but it wasn't Lucian. One of his men.
Tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes that held none of Lucian's amusement this one was here for business but Eve didn't wait. She moved like a shadow, fast and precise, her knife slicing through the air toward their attacker.
The man reacted quickly, dodging the strike, but Eve was relentless. She twisted, pivoting, bringing her knee up into his ribs before driving the knife forward again.
Selene barely had time to regain her footing before another figure appeared in the doorway. Lucian had sent his men in first.
Selene exhaled sharply, gripping her knife. She wasn't going down without a fight.
She lunged forward just as the second man charged toward her, dodging to the side as he reached for her. She moved instinctively, driving the blade downward toward his arm, but he was faster than she expected.
A sharp pain shot through her wrist as he caught her movement, twisting her hand sharply and the knife clattered to the floor.
Selene reacted instantly, throwing her weight forward, using his own momentum against him as she slammed her elbow into his ribs. He grunted in pain but didn't loosen his grip.
Eve was still fighting the first man, but they were outnumbered.
Selene struggled, her breath coming in sharp bursts. They couldn't win this fight–not like this then a familiar voice from outside. 'Enough." And Everything stopped.
Lucian stepped into the cabin, his presence filling the space like a cold wind. His men fell back immediately, releasing their hold on Selene and Eve.
Lucian's gaze settled on Selene, his expression unreadable then, in a voice that sent chills down her spine, he said 'You're coming with me."
