The Ties That Bind
The cold air pressed against Selene's skin as she regained consciousness. Her mind felt sluggish, her limbs heavy, but the moment she tried to move, the bite of metal against her wrists reminded her where she was.
She was still in Lucian's grasp where the dim glow of the single overhead light cast flickering shadows along the concrete walls, their uneven patterns shifting like ghosts of past mistakes.
The silence was thick, pressing against her ears, making the weight of her situation all the more unbearable. Selene inhaled deeply, steadying herself.
Lucian thought she was cornered. He believed the walls he built around her would break her spirit but he didn't know her as well as he thought.
The door creaked open. Selene didn't move, keeping her expression blank as Lucian stepped inside, his presence filling the room like a storm cloud before the first crack of thunder.
He didn't speak right away. Instead, he studied her as if she were a puzzle he had yet to solve. 'You're awake," he finally said, his voice smooth. Selene blinked slowly, her tone flat. 'Disappointed?"
Lucian's lips twitched slightly, but his amusement didn't reach his eyes. 'Not at all," he murmured, stepping closer. 'I expected you to wake up fighting." Selene exhaled through her nose. 'Maybe I'm just saving my energy."
Lucian chuckled, shaking his head. 'You always did have a sharp tongue." He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small key, with a flick of his wrist, he unlocked the cuffs securing her wrists to the chair.
Selene didn't react, but inside, her mind immediately calculated the possibilities.
Lucian watched her, waiting for signs of fear, maybe a shift in control but he might be waiting a long time.
'I think it's time we stop playing these games," he murmured. Selene rolled her wrists, ignoring the dull ache left by the cuffs. 'That's rich, coming from you," Lucian smirked but didn't respond right away. Instead, he took a slow step back, gesturing toward the door. 'Come with me." But Selene didn't move. 'Why?"
Lucian sighed. 'Because resisting won't help you and because you need to understand what's at stake." Selene exhaled, her eyes narrowing. This was another test but she needed to see what was waiting outside this room.
Slowly, she rose to her feet, her stance steady despite the stiffness in her muscles. Lucian nodded approvingly, stepping aside as she walked past him into the dimly lit hallway.
The corridor stretched ahead, lined with closed doors, each one carrying secrets she had no time to uncover. Selene memorized every turn, every possible exit.
Lucian walked beside her, his steps even. 'I'm giving you a chance, Selene." Selene scoffed. 'You don't give chances, Lucian, you take them."Lucian smiled as if amused by her response. 'Maybe I'm learning."
Selene ignored him, focusing on what was coming next then they reached another door. Lucian didn't hesitate, he pushed it open, Selene stepped inside and froze.
Eve was there, her wrists were bound in front of her, a faint bruise forming along her cheekbone but her eyes burned with quiet fury.
Selene inhaled slowly, keeping her voice calm. 'Let her go." Lucian sighed behind her. 'You keep making demands as if you have the upper hand."Selene turned, her gaze sharp. 'You have what you want. Let her go."
Lucian studied her then, he smiled but it wasn't a pleasant smile. 'Fine," he murmured. Selene's breath caught, that was too easy.
Lucian nodded toward one of the guards, the man stepped forward, pulling a knife from his belt. Selene's pulse spiked. 'Wait" But the guard didn't stop, he cut through Eve's restraints, the blade slipping through the rope effortlessly. Eve exhaled sharply, shaking out her wrists.
Lucian tilted his head. 'See? I can be reasonable."Selene's eyes didn't leave Eve because something was off, then Eve moved fast and Selene barely had time to process before Eve turned and drove her fist into the guard's throat.
The room exploded into chaos. Selene reacted instantly, grabbing the chair beside her and swinging it toward the second guard before he could react, the wood splintered on impact, sending the man stumbling but Lucian remained still, watching.
Selene turned, grabbing Eve's wrist. 'We have to move now!" Eve nodded, but before they could bolt for the exit, Lucian finally reacted. He exhaled. 'Disappointing." Selene barely had time to turn before she felt the cold metal of a gun press against the base of her spine and she froze. Eve stilled beside her, her breath uneven.
Lucian stepped forward, his voice calm. 'Where exactly did you think this was going?" Selene's jaw clenched. Lucian sighed, shaking his head. 'You always try to run and yet…" He leaned in slightly, his breath ghosting over her ear. 'You never get far." Selene didn't move, didn't breathe.
Lucian tilted his head. 'Now, let's try this again."The guard behind her pressed the gun harder against her back and Lucian smiled. 'Kneel."
