The Reckoning
Their footsteps echoed through the empty alley as Selene, Axel, and Aurora sprinted across the rooftops, their lungs burning and their hearts pounding in their chests.
The city spread out before them with a maze of narrow streets and towering buildings, each one offering new opportunities to escape but none of them felt like a true escape.
The weight of the pursuers on their heels pressed down on them like a dark cloud, suffocating their every step.
Selene's eyes flicked back toward the building they had just leaped from as the roof behind them was silent for a moment but she could feel the presence of the people hunting them.
They weren't far behind.
'There's no way we're outrunning them for long," Axel said, his voice strained but filled with urgency.
His breath was heavy from the run and his eyes darted to the far-off skyline. 'We have to get off the rooftops."
Selene didn't answer immediately, she was focused on the path ahead, scanning every building for the quickest escape route.
The narrow alley they were racing through led to a larger intersection and beyond that, Selene knew, lay the more populated areas of the city.
But how long would it take for them to get there? How many more miles did they need to run before they were truly free?
The thought gnawed at her but she pushed it aside, there was no time for doubt, they couldn't afford to look back and they had to keep moving.
She turned to Aurora, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling inside her. 'You okay?"
Aurora gave a quick nod, her expression tight, her breath coming in ragged gasps. 'Just… keep going."
Selene squeezed her shoulder. 'We'll make it. We have to."
Axel glanced back over his shoulder, his jaw clenched in frustration. 'I don't like this, they're getting too close."
At that moment, the unmistakable sound of engine roars echoed through the city streets.
Selene's blood ran cold, it was the SUV, the same one that had followed them through the alley, relentless and never faltering, now they were closing in again.
'We need to lose them now," Axel said, his voice sharp with panic as he swerved left, his feet pounding faster as he moved toward an open roof exit.
'Head down to the street, we're running out of roof space."
The words barely left his mouth before the loud crash of an impact sounded behind them, and the echo of tires screeching through the narrow alley shook the night air.
Selene's heart skipped a beat as the sound of the SUV grew louder, its engine roaring like an animal in pursuit.
Without thinking, she pushed herself harder, pushing the limits of her exhausted body.
She couldn't let them catch her and couldn't let them catch any of them.
Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of light up ahead, followed by a loud crash as something large exploded on the street below.
The shockwave rocked the ground beneath them, sending a burst of wind in every direction.
Selene ducked instinctively, her heart slamming in her chest, her body jerked, sending her to the ground but she managed to stay upright.
'What the hell?" Aurora cried, her voice filled with confusion and panic, she stumbled to her feet as the flash of light turned the entire street below into a sea of flames.
'Don't stop!" Selene shouted, her voice frantic. She didn't know what was happening but she didn't care.
They couldn't wait around to find out, not when they were being hunted.
Axel was already ahead of her, his legs carrying him toward the edge of the roof. 'We need to find a way down!" he yelled.
But Selene couldn't answer, she was too focused on the explosion below them.
The fire had spread fast and she could hear the familiar sounds of sirens wailing in the distance.
The explosion wasn't just a random attack, it was a diversion.
The kind of setup that meant they weren't just being followed but were being trapped.
Another burst of fire illuminated the street below as the SUV's tires screeched around the corner, pushing forward with reckless speed.
The men inside it had no hesitation, they were coming for them, fast.
Selene's mind raced, the fire wasn't an accident, it was a trap, and someone wanted to make sure they didn't escape.
'We can't go down that way," Selene said, her voice tense, her gaze locked on the growing blaze below. 'They'll corner us."
Axel's expression was grim. 'Then what the hell do we do? We've got nowhere left to go."
'I'm thinking," Selene snapped, trying to keep the panic from taking hold, there had to be something, there had to be a way out.
Then, as if on cue, a figure stepped from the shadows, emerging from the side of the building.
Selene froze, her breath catching in her throat.
The figure was cloaked in black, their face obscured by a mask and they moved with precision, not rushing but not hesitating either.
The footsteps echoed in the chaos, cutting through the sound of the roaring flames below.
For a moment, Selene thought she might be seeing things but her exhaustion was playing tricks on her because the figure was real and they weren't here to help.
'Aurora, get down!" Selene shouted, her instincts kicking in.
She grabbed Aurora and pulled her down as the figure raised a weapon, the click of the safety being released was unmistakable and then the figure fired.
The bullet missed, but only by inches, the sound of it ricocheted off the rooftop and Selene's heart skipped a beat.
'Go, now!" Axel shouted, his voice fierce with urgency.
He fired back at the figure, the shot barely grazing the target, but the figure didn't flinch and they were unbothered like this was part of the plan.
'Move!" Axel shouted again, urging them toward the nearest edge.
They had no time to lose and no time to fight.
Selene's instincts screamed at her to act, they couldn't stay in one place, the trap had been set and they were running out of options.
'Get down to the street!" she yelled and without hesitation, they rushed for the nearest fire escape.
The figure took a step toward them but before they could close the distance, the roar of another engine, closer this time, filled the air.
The sound of tires skidding against gravel and the screech of metal grinding against stone drowned out everything else.
The figure paused, glancing over their shoulder, before looking back at Selene with cold and calculating eyes, and then, without warning, they turned and sprinted toward the edge of the building.
'What the hell?" Aurora gasped.
Selene didn't wait to find out, she didn't care who the figure was, they had a window and it was closing fast.
She pushed forward, her legs burning with exhaustion, her mind focused on survival, she could feel the heat of the flames at her back as they sprinted toward the fire escape.
Behind them, the figure was already gone, disappearing into the darkness but Selene didn't dare look back.
They had no time to lose, they had to make it to the street before the fire reached the building or the next wave of enemies found them.
The fire escape was just ahead and it was their only chance to get out of this alive.
