A Race Against Time
The night was alive with flashing lights and the roar of engines.
The city blurred past in streaks of neon and shadows as the black SUV trailed dangerously close behind them.
The alleyways they sped through were tight, every turn sharper than the last, but Axel's hands were steady on the wheel, his grin tight with excitement.
Selene sat in the passenger seat, gun in hand, eyes sharp as she studied the approaching threat. Aurora sat in the back, knuckles white as she clutched the edge of the seat.
'They're gaining on us," Aurora hissed, glancing over her shoulder.
Axel let out a low chuckle. 'Yeah? Let's see if they can handle this."
He yanked the wheel hard to the right, the tires screeching as they barely missed the edge of a parked truck.
The SUV followed, its headlights casting long shadows over the walls of the narrow alley.
Selene's jaw tightened. This wasn't just an ordinary chase. Whoever was behind that wheel was skilled. They weren't just following they were hunting.
She turned to Axel. 'Find a way to lose them. Fast." Axel scoffed. 'I'm working on it."
Aurora's breathing was uneven. 'I don't think we have much time."
Selene's eyes flicked to the mirror. The SUV was still there, unwavering. Then the window rolled down.
A figure leaned out, gun in hand.
Selene didn't think she reacted.
She rolled down her own window, aimed, and fired two precise shots.
The first hit the SUV's side mirror, shattering it. The second grazed the shooter's arm, making him flinch back inside but the SUV didn't slow down.
Aurora gasped. 'Selene, they're not stopping."
Selene exhaled sharply. They were persistent. Too persistent.
Axel cursed under his breath. 'Okay, let's see if they can handle a little rough terrain."
He made a sudden sharp turn, cutting through a construction zone. The car bounced violently as they sped over uneven dirt roads, dodging steel beams and piles of cement bags.
Aurora clutched the seat tighter. 'Are you trying to kill us?" Axel smirked. 'No, but I'd rather not get shot, thanks."
The SUV followed, but the rough terrain slowed them slightly.
Selene narrowed her eyes. It wasn't enough. She turned to Axel. 'Get us to the bridge."
Axel's brow lifted. 'That's risky."
Selene's voice was cool. 'So is getting caught." Axel exhaled. 'Alright, hold on."
He spun the wheel, and the car skidded back onto the main road, racing toward the city's old industrial bridge.
The SUV was still behind them, relentless, but Selene was already formulating her next move.
Aurora's voice was tight. 'Please tell me you have a plan." Selene smirked slightly. 'Just trust me."
Aurora groaned. 'That's what I'm afraid of."
The bridge loomed ahead, its steel framework casting long shadows beneath the flickering streetlights. The water below was dark, reflecting the glimmers of city lights like broken glass.
Selene turned to Axel. 'Drive straight." Axel shot her a look. 'Straight? That's all you got?"
Selene's grip on her gun tightened. 'I'll take care of the rest." Axel muttered something under his breath but didn't argue.
The SUV roared behind them, closing the distance.
Selene rolled down the window again, adjusting her aim. She only had one shot at this.
She exhaled. Focused. Then she fired. The bullet hit the SUV's front tire.
The vehicle swerved violently, its tires screeching as the driver struggled for control.
Selene watched, breath steady, as the SUV skidded sideways, crashing hard against the bridge's guardrail.
For a moment, it looked like it would stop then the railing gave way.
Aurora gasped, eyes wide. Selene didn't blink. She knew what was coming.
The SUV tipped forward, teetering on the edge then it fell.
The sound of metal hitting water echoed through the night.
Aurora let out a shaky breath. 'Is it… are they…"
Selene's gaze remained locked on the spot where the SUV had disappeared. 'They won't be coming back up."
Axel let out a long whistle. 'Remind me never to get on your bad side."
Selene rolled up the window, exhaling slowly. It wasn't over. Not yet.
She turned to Axel. 'Drive. We don't have much time." Aurora looked at her. 'Much time for what?"
Selene's lips curled into a slow smirk. 'To strike back."
Axel nodded, pressing down on the gas. 'Where to?" Selene's eyes darkened. 'We're paying Damian a visit."
Aurora inhaled sharply. 'Selene" but Selene didn't look at her.
She had played defense long enough.
Now? It was time to go on the attack.
