The Final Hour
The black SUV sat parked outside the warehouse, its headlights dim in the misty evening air.
Selene's heart beat a little faster, but she didn't let it show. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, her fingers white from the pressure.
Aurora sat beside her, her golden eyes scanning the area, lips pressed into a thin line.
"This feels wrong," Aurora whispered, her voice barely audible above the low hum of the engine. "We should've come up with a better plan."
Selene didn't answer immediately. Her gaze was fixed ahead, her mind racing through every possible scenario.
The warehouse was dark, the only light coming from the distant street lamps that lined the road. The tension in the air was thick, as if the world itself was holding its breath.
"I've never been one for plans," Selene muttered, her voice steady, though her pulse was quickening. "I know what we have to do. We go in, get Axel, and get out. That's all that matters."
Aurora looked at her, her eyes filled with concern. "And what if it's a trap?"
Selene's gaze flickered to the rearview mirror before meeting Aurora's eyes. "Then we fight our way out. We've done it before."
Aurora swallowed hard, her fingers trembling slightly on her lap. "But we don't know what we're walking into."
Selene's lips curled into a tight smile, though there was little humor in it. "We don't need to know."
The sound of a distant door slamming broke the silence, and Selene's grip on the wheel tightened.
"We're too late," Aurora whispered, her voice thick with dread.
Selene exhaled, slowly but deliberately. She wasn't going to let fear control her. Not now. Not ever. "Stay close. If anything happens, we move fast."
She turned the engine off, the sudden silence in the car unnerving. Aurora's eyes were locked on the warehouse now, her hand resting on the door handle.
Selene slid out of the car and motioned for Aurora to follow.
The cold air hit her face, biting through her jacket as she walked toward the entrance of the warehouse.
The concrete floor beneath her feet felt cold, every step echoing in the silence around them.
They reached the warehouse door, which was slightly ajar, a faint light spilling out into the darkness. Selene pushed it open cautiously, motioning for Aurora to stay close.
Inside, the space was vast and empty, rows of crates lining the walls. A single light hung from the ceiling, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch endlessly.
"Axel?" Selene called out, her voice echoing through the empty space.
A faint noise came from the far corner of the warehouse, followed by a familiar voice, though strained and weak. "Selene?"
Selene's heart skipped a beat. "Axel!"
She moved quickly toward the sound, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts. Aurora stayed behind her, her eyes wide, scanning every corner for signs of danger.
They reached the corner, and Selene's eyes immediately locked onto Axel. He was sitting on the floor, his hands bound behind his back, his face bruised and battered but alive.
"Axel!" Aurora cried, rushing toward him.
He looked up, his eyes flickering with a mix of relief and pain. "Aurora... Selene... I knew you'd come."
Selene knelt beside him, her eyes scanning the ropes that bound his wrists. "I'm getting you out of here," she said quickly, her hands working to untie him.
Before she could finish, a voice called out from behind them.
"Well, well. Look who finally decided to show up."
Selene's blood ran cold as she turned around. There, standing in the doorway, was Victor Sinclair.
A smile spread across his face, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I was beginning to wonder if you were going to keep me waiting much longer."
Selene stood slowly, her fingers tightening into fists. "What is this, Victor?"
Victor's smirk widened. "A little reunion. I thought we could talk. But clearly, you've got other plans."
Selene stepped in front of Axel, shielding him with her body. "You want to talk? After everything you've done?"
Victor raised an eyebrow, his hands casually in his pockets. "Oh, come now. You can't seriously think I'd let you just walk out of here without consequences, can you?"
Selene's voice was sharp, cutting through the silence. "What do you want?"
Victor chuckled, the sound almost condescending. "What do I want? It's simple, Selene.
I want you to understand that this is bigger than you. This is bigger than me. This is about control. And I am the one who controls everything."
Aurora moved toward Axel, helping him to his feet. She glanced at Selene, her face a mixture of confusion and fear. "What does he mean? What is he planning?"
Selene didn't answer immediately. She was still staring at Victor, her mind racing. She knew he was dangerous, but this-this felt different. He wasn't just toying with her now.
Victor's smirk faded slightly, and he stepped closer. "You still don't understand, do you, Selene? You think you can fight me. But you're out of your depth."
Selene's heart pounded, but her face remained steady. "I'm done running from you, Victor. And I'm done being your pawn."
Victor's eyes flickered with something dark, something dangerous. "You think you have control? You think you're in charge? No, Selene.
You've never been in control. Not once. You're just a piece in a much larger game."
Selene's breath caught in her throat. What was he talking about?
Before she could react, a door slammed open behind her, and the sound of footsteps echoed in the warehouse.
Selene spun around, her heart leaping in her chest.
Standing there, framed by the doorway, was none other than Damian Rothschild.
His blue eyes gleamed, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
Aurora gasped, her hands instinctively moving to her side. "Damian?"
Damian stepped into the warehouse, his posture relaxed, but there was a dangerous glint in his eyes. "You didn't think you could make a move without me knowing, did you?"
Victor's gaze flickered toward him. "Damian."
Selene's stomach twisted. Damian was involved too?
She had been so focused on Victor that she hadn't seen it coming.
Damian's eyes never left Selene. "You've been busy, haven't you, Selene?"
Selene's voice was steady, but there was a sharp edge to it. "What do you want, Damian?"
Damian chuckled. "What I've always wanted. Power. Control. The world at my feet."
Victor let out a low laugh, shaking his head. "You see, Selene, you're not the only one who thinks they can change things. But we both know the truth. There's only room for one king."
The air in the warehouse was thick, heavy with tension. Selene's mind raced. She was surrounded. They had her right where they wanted her.
Damian stepped closer to her, his smirk never wavering. "This is the end of the line, Selene. You lost."
Selene's eyes narrowed, her grip tightening on her gun. She couldn't let them think they had won. Not now. Not ever.
But just as she opened her mouth to respond, a loud crash came from behind them.
The door to the warehouse exploded inward, and the sound of multiple footsteps rushing in made the floor shake beneath them.
Damian and Victor turned simultaneously, their expressions shifting from smug amusement to stunned confusion.
The door slammed open wider, and more men flooded into the room.
The trap had just been sprung.
Selene's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the figure at the front of the group. It was Lucian and he wasn't alone.
