The Reckoning Begins
The road stretched ahead, dark and empty, the city lights flickering in the distance like dying embers.
The engine roared beneath them as Axel pushed the car faster, his hands firm on the wheel. The adrenaline from the chase still lingered in the air, thick and suffocating.
Selene sat in the passenger seat, her fingers tapping against her knee in a controlled rhythm. Her mind was already calculating, already moving ahead to the next step.
Aurora sat in the backseat, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. Her breathing had evened out, but the tension in her body had not faded. She hadn't spoken since they had left the bridge.
Axel glanced at Selene. 'You sure about this? Damian isn't exactly the kind of guy you walk up to for a friendly chat."
Selene's lips curled slightly. 'I'm not here for a chat."
Aurora finally spoke, her voice tight. 'Selene, we just barely escaped with our lives, and now you want to walk straight into Damian's den?"
Selene didn't turn to look at her. 'Yes."
Aurora exhaled sharply. 'That's insane."
Selene tilted her head slightly. 'Is it? Or is it the only move that makes sense?"
Aurora shook her head. 'You don't even have a plan." Selene smirked. 'I always have a plan."
Axel chuckled under his breath. 'I like this side of you, Laurent. Bold. Reckless."
Selene's gaze remained on the road. 'Reckless gets you killed. I prefer to think of it as strategy."
Aurora groaned. 'You're impossible."
Selene finally turned her head, her eyes locking onto Aurora's. 'I told you before, Aurora. If you stand beside me, there's no turning back. You still have a choice."
Aurora hesitated, her golden eyes flickering with something unreadable. Then she exhaled, her jaw tightening. 'I already made my choice."
Selene studied her for a moment before nodding. 'Then let's finish this."
Axel smirked. 'I'm gonna assume that means we're going to Damian's estate."
Selene's voice was smooth. 'Drive faster." Axel let out a short laugh and pressed the gas pedal.
The city blurred past them in streaks of neon and shadows. The streets were quieter now, the world moving at a slower pace compared to the chaos that had just unfolded. But Selene knew the storm was only beginning.
The car pulled up to Damian Rothschild's private estate, an expansive mansion tucked behind iron gates and armed security. The place reeked of power, wealth, and arrogance.
Axel parked a distance away, scanning the security setup. 'Armed guards. Surveillance cameras. Probably more inside."
Selene's smirk was slow. 'Predictable."
Aurora's fingers tightened in her lap. 'You're not seriously thinking of walking in there unarmed?"
Selene glanced at her. 'Did I say anything about being unarmed?" Aurora exhaled, shaking her head. 'You're insane."
Selene's smirk widened. 'I prefer ‘strategic.'"
Axel turned in his seat. 'Alright, boss. How do you want to do this?"
Selene's gaze flickered toward the entrance. 'We're not sneaking in. We're walking straight through the front door."
Aurora's mouth parted slightly. 'Are you insane?" Selene's voice was calm. 'Damian isn't expecting me to show up like this. He'll be too curious to turn me away."
Axel chuckled. 'Bold. I like it."
Selene stepped out of the car, her posture relaxed but her mind sharp. Aurora hesitated before following. 'This is a mistake."
Selene didn't respond. It was only a mistake if she lost.
The guards at the gate straightened as they approached. One of them stepped forward, hand resting on his gun. 'Miss Laurent. Unexpected visit."
Selene smirked. 'Tell your boss I'd like a word."
The guard hesitated, then spoke into his earpiece. A few seconds later, the gates clicked open.
Aurora whispered, 'I can't believe that worked." Selene chuckled softly. 'You should learn to trust me."
They were led into the grand foyer, where Damian Rothschild stood waiting.
He was dressed in his usual dark suit, his posture relaxed, but his blue eyes gleamed with curiosity and amusement.
'Well, well," Damian mused. 'To what do I owe the pleasure?" Selene stepped forward, her smirk never fading. 'We need to talk."
Damian's gaze flickered toward Aurora. 'Ah, I see. Trouble in paradise?" Aurora's jaw tightened, but she said nothing.
Selene's voice was smooth. 'You tell me."
Damian chuckled, stepping closer. 'You have nerve walking in here after tonight's little… event."
Selene tilted her head. 'Is that a confession?"
Damian smirked. 'Please. If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't be standing here." Selene's expression didn't change. 'Then tell me, Damian. Who does want me dead?"
Damian chuckled. 'You think I give away information for free?"
Selene's lips curled slightly. 'I think you like to show off what you know." Damian exhaled, studying her. 'Clever as always."
Selene waited. Finally, Damian's smirk faded slightly. 'Victor Sinclair."
Aurora inhaled sharply. Selene remained still. 'What does he want?"
Damian's eyes darkened. 'To control everything." Selene's smirk widened. 'And you? Where do you stand?"
Damian chuckled. 'I stand wherever the winning side is." Selene stepped closer, lowering her voice. 'Then choose wisely."
Damian studied her, then smirked. 'You're playing a dangerous game, Selene." Selene's voice was smooth. 'I don't play. I win."
Damian chuckled. 'We'll see about that." Then the sound of gunfire outside.
Aurora flinched. Axel's voice crackled through Selene's earpiece. 'Selene, we have a problem."
Selene's jaw clenched. Of course, they had a problem.
Damian sighed dramatically. 'Looks like the party just started." Selene turned toward the doors. 'Then let's finish it."
