The Edge of Sacrifice
Selene's mind raced as she stood before Lucian, the weight of her decision pressing down on her like a storm ready to break.
Every muscle in her body was coiled tight, her heart hammering as she took in the man standing just a few feet away.
Lucian was watching her, his stance deceptively relaxed, his lips curled into a smirk that carried more amusement than concern. He had played this game far too long to feel threatened so easily, and that only made Selene's resolve harden.
She couldn't afford to hesitate, not now, not when everything was on the line.
Eve remained beside her with her shoulders squared, her breathing steady despite the charged atmosphere.
Her willingness to stay behind in exchange for Selene and Caleb's freedom had sent a sharp jolt of shock through Selene's system, but she hadn't had time to argue before Lucian had spoken.
Now, with each passing second, the walls were closing in, and Selene knew the moment of decision had arrived. She had to act.
Lucian exhaled slowly, shifting his weight slightly as he studied her reaction. His expression was one of practiced patience, but beneath the surface, there was something darker.
He knew he had control, or at least he believed he did. He had spent years mastering the art of manipulation, of bending people to his will until they had no choice but to follow his lead but Selene wasn't playing by his rules anymore.
'You look torn, Selene," Lucian mused, his voice smooth, devoid of any real emotion. 'It's almost admirable, watching you struggle to decide whether you should walk away or make another foolish mistake."
He tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing just a fraction. 'Though we both know how this ends, don't we?"
Selene clenched her fists, forcing her breathing to stay steady. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her break. 'You're right about one thing," she said, her voice calm but firm. 'I do know how this ends and it won't be the way you expect."
Lucian's smirk deepened, but his eyes flickered with something unreadable. 'Interesting," he murmured. 'Then why don't you show me?"
Selene didn't hesitate. She moved but not toward Lucian, instead, she reached for Eve, grabbing her wrist and yanking her forward just as she pivoted, using the momentum to swing Eve out of Lucian's reach.
It was a calculated risk, but one Selene had no choice but to take. She wasn't about to leave Eve behind, no matter how much she tried to convince her otherwise.
Lucian reacted instantly, his body shifting toward her with alarming speed, but Selene had anticipated it. She twisted away, dropping low and sweeping her leg out toward him in a sharp, controlled motion. Her foot connected with the side of his knee, sending him off balance for just a second.
'Go!" she hissed. Eve didn't waste time arguing. She ran.
Selene turned just as Lucian's grip latched onto her arm. The force of it nearly yanked her back, but she was ready. She jerked forward instead of pulling away, using his own momentum against him. The shift caught him off guard for a brief moment, and that was all the opening she needed.
She drove her elbow back into his ribs, twisting sharply as she broke free. Pain flared through her arm where his grip had tightened, but she ignored it. She had no time for pain.
Lucian recovered quickly, his eyes darkening as he straightened. 'Clever," he admitted, rolling his shoulders slightly as if shaking off the impact. 'But not clever enough."
Selene wasn't waiting around to see what he did next. She turned and ran.The hallways blurred as she sprinted after Eve, her pulse a deafening roar in her ears.
The estate was vast, filled with twisting corridors and hidden passageways, but she had spent enough time within these walls to know which way led to the outer courtyards. If they could make it there, they had a chance.
Selene flinched but didn't stop as gunshot rang out, the bullet ricocheted against the marble wall beside her, sending fragments flying but Lucian wasn't aiming to kill.
She pushed harder, her breath coming in sharp bursts as she reached the corridor leading toward the open courtyard. Eve was already ahead, reaching for the door.
Selene pushed forward, forcing her legs to move faster as the door burst open and the cold night air hit her like a slap to the face, but she didn't slow down.
The courtyard stretched before them, a wide expanse of stone and carefully manicured greenery. The outer perimeter was lined with walls, high enough to deter casual escape attempts but not impossible to climb. If they could make it over, they'd be free.
Lucian's voice rang out behind them. 'Don't let them leave." Too many Footsteps make their way towards them.
Selene and Eve didn't stop, they ran. Shouts echoed behind them, the sounds of guards closing in, but Selene focused on the only thing that mattered, the wall.
Eve reached it first, vaulting up with practiced ease. Selene followed, her fingers scraping against the rough stone as she pulled herself up. She had just swung her legs over when a hand clamped around her ankle. Her stomach dropped.
Lucian's grip was unrelenting, his fingers tightening painfully as he yanked her back, forcing her balance to shift.
Selene kicked out hard. Her heel connected with his forearm, the impact jarring and Lucian's grip loosened just enough.
Her body dropped to the other side, landing roughly, but she didn't stop moving. Eve was already pulling her up, dragging her forward as they bolted toward the trees.
Behind them, Lucian's voice was calm, almost amused. 'You can't outrun me, Selene."But Selene didn't look back.
She kept running because for the first time, she wasn't just running away. She was running toward something.
