The Line Between Betrayal and Loyalty
The sound of gunfire still echoed in Selene's ears as she stepped through the dimly lit corridor, her heels clicking against the marble floor. The mansion was silent now, but she could feel the tension thick in the air.
Aurora walked beside her, her hands clenched into fists, her golden eyes filled with something unreadable.
Behind them, Axel moved with the careful ease of someone who knew danger could come from any direction.
Selene didn't slow down. She didn't hesitate. She was here for one reason. To end this game before it destroyed them all.
The doors at the end of the hallway loomed ahead, heavy and carved with intricate gold designs. Behind them sat Victor Sinclair.
Aurora's father.
The man who had been pulling the strings, controlling the game from the shadows, setting the pieces exactly where he wanted them.
But tonight, Selene was flipping the board.
She reached for the handle, pausing only for a second. 'Are you ready?" Aurora exhaled. 'I've been ready for a long time."
Axel smirked. 'Let's make some noise."
Selene pushed the doors open.
Victor sat at the head of a long mahogany table, a glass of wine in his hand. He didn't flinch. He didn't even look surprised.
If anything, he looked amused.
'Selene Laurent," he mused, swirling the wine in his glass. 'You never disappoint." Selene's voice was cold. 'Neither do you. Always so predictable."
Victor chuckled. 'Flattery? How unexpected."
Selene stepped forward, placing both hands on the table. 'Let's skip the formalities, Victor. We both know why I'm here."
Victor's eyes flickered toward Aurora. 'Do we?"
Aurora inhaled sharply, but Selene spoke before she could. 'You tried to kill me."
Victor sighed, setting his glass down. 'Tried?" He smirked. 'If I wanted you dead, Selene, you would be."
Selene's fingers twitched slightly. 'Then what was the bullet through my window? A warning?" Victor exhaled. 'A reminder."
Aurora's voice was sharp. 'A reminder of what? That you still think you own me?"
Victor's expression darkened slightly. 'Aurora"
'No." Aurora stepped forward. 'You don't get to control me anymore."
Victor's lips curled slightly. 'Control? My dear, you misunderstand." His eyes flickered back to Selene. 'This was never about you, Aurora. This was about the game." Selene's jaw clenched. 'Then let's end it."
Victor studied her for a moment before smirking. 'And how do you plan to do that?"
Selene leaned in slightly. 'By taking you off the board." Victor chuckled. 'You think you can?"
Selene didn't smile. 'I already have."
Victor's smirk faltered, just slightly.
Selene straightened. 'You made a mistake, Victor. You thought you could control everything, that you could force people into submission, but the problem with that? Eventually, they push back."
Victor's gaze sharpened. 'What have you done?" Selene's smirk was slow. 'I made a deal."
Aurora inhaled sharply. 'With who?"
Selene's eyes gleamed. 'Damian."
Victor's fingers tightened around his glass. 'You're lying." Selene tilted her head. 'Am I?"
Victor's expression shifted just for a fraction of a second. But it was enough.
Selene had spent years studying power. Studying people. She knew when someone had just realized they had lost.
And Victor? He had lost.
The doors behind them swung open again, and Damian Rothschild stepped inside.
His smirk was wider than ever, his blue eyes practically glowing with amusement. 'I do love a good surprise."
Victor's jaw tightened. 'You traitorous bastard."
Damian chuckled. 'Please. You didn't seriously think I was going to let you win, did you?"
Victor stood slowly. 'You're making a mistake."
Selene's voice was smooth. 'No, Victor. You did."
The tension in the room crackled like lightning.
Victor exhaled, his smirk returning-forced this time. 'And what now? You think I'll just walk away?"
Selene's eyes darkened. 'I think you don't have a choice."
Victor's gaze flickered toward Aurora, something unreadable in his expression. Then he smirked. 'Interesting," he mused. 'You think you've won."
Selene didn't blink. 'I know I have." Victor's smirk widened. 'Then tell me, Selene."
His voice dropped lower.
'Where is Axel?" Selene froze.
Aurora inhaled sharply. 'What?"
Selene turned but Axel was gone.
Damian's smirk faded slightly. 'That's… concerning."
Selene's blood ran cold. No. This wasn't right.
Victor's smirk deepened. 'Oh, dear. It seems you forgot to protect all your pieces."
Selene's pulse pounded in her ears. Where was Axel? Then a phone rang.
Victor slowly reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. He held it up for Selene to see.
An unknown number.
Victor chuckled. 'Shall we answer?"
Selene's breath slowed. 'Put it on speaker."
Victor smirked and pressed the button.
A voice came through the line, distorted but clear. 'If you want to see him alive, you'll do exactly as I say."
Selene's stomach dropped.
Aurora whispered, 'Oh, my god."
Victor exhaled, looking amused. 'Well, well. It seems someone else is playing the game now."
Selene's grip on the table tightened.
Whoever this was—they had Axel. And that meant the game was far from over.
