Fractured Loyalties
The silence stretched between Selene and Eve, heavy with unspoken words and unasked questions.
The air in the room felt thick, and stifling, as if the walls themselves were closing in, reminding them of the reality they were trapped in. Lucian had made his move. Now, it was their turn.
Eve shifted slightly, her fingers tapping against her thigh; a quiet habit, a sign of restrained frustration. 'He's trying to break you," she said, her voice low but firm. 'Bringing me here wasn't just about leverage. He's watching you, studying how you react."
Selene exhaled, dragging a hand through her damp hair. 'I know." Lucian was testing her, waiting to see which piece of the game she would move next.
Eve's gaze sharpened. 'So, what do we do?"Selene's mind worked through every possibility, every angle.
Fighting openly wasn't an option. They had no weapons and no way to escape without being caught but there were other ways to fight, ways that didn't require brute force but precision, and strategy.
'We don't give him what he wants," Selene said finally. 'We don't let him see cracks."Eve studied her for a moment, then nodded. 'Then we play the game."
Selene's chest tightened, but she forced herself to breathe through it.
Lucian had pulled Eve into this because he wanted to control her. He wanted to see how much she was willing to lose but what he didn't realize was that she had already lost too much to let fear dictate her actions now.
A sharp knock on the door shattered the quiet. Selene and Eve exchanged glances before Selene rose from the bed, turning her expression unreadable; whatever was coming next, she had to be ready.
The door swung open. Lucian's second-in-command stepped inside; Daniel.
Selene's stomach clenched at the sight of him. Daniel had always been Lucian's shadow, the enforcer who carried out orders without hesitation. He wasn't as arrogant as some of Lucian's men, nor was he as outwardly cruel but that made him more dangerous. He didn't need to show his power to prove it existed.
His gaze flickered between them before settling on Selene. 'Lucian wants to see you."Selene didn't hesitate. 'Then let's not keep him waiting." Eve started to move, but Daniel raised a hand. 'Just her."Eve stiffened. 'Like hell." Daniel's expression didn't change. 'This isn't up for discussion."
Selene placed a hand on Eve's arm before she could push the argument further. Fighting now wouldn't help them, they had to pick their battles carefully.
She turned to Daniel, her voice calm. 'Let's go."Daniel stepped aside, waiting for her to pass before following close behind.
The hallway was dimly lit, lined with doors that all looked the same, but Selene knew better than to think this place was anything ordinary.
Lucian never left details to chance. Every turn, every lock, every corridor was designed for control.
As they reached the end of the hallway, Daniel stopped in front of a set of heavy double doors, without knocking, he pushed them open. Lucian was already waiting.
The room was expansive, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city skyline. A fireplace flickered in the corner, its warmth doing little to thaw the ice in Lucian's gaze as he turned toward her.
Selene stepped forward, refusing to let the weight of his presence push her back. This was a dance, one she had been forced to learn a long time ago, and if Lucian thought she would falter, he was mistaken.
Lucian studied her for a long moment before speaking. 'You look well." Selene tilted her head. 'Is that supposed to be a compliment?"
Lucian smirked, but there was no amusement behind it. 'It's an observation." He gestured toward the chair in front of him. 'Sit." Selene didn't move. 'If this is another one of your games, let's skip to the part where you tell me what you really want."
Lucian's gaze darkened slightly, but he remained composed. 'I've already told you what I want." He leaned forward slightly. 'You back where you belong."Selene met his stare without flinching. 'And you think chaining me to this place will accomplish that?"
Lucian exhaled slowly, as if disappointed.'Selene, you misunderstand me." He leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping lightly against the armrest. 'This isn't about chains. It's about choices."
Selene narrowed her eyes. 'And what choice are you giving me exactly?"Lucian's smirk returned, but this time, there was cold beneath it. 'The choice to stop fighting a war you can't win." Selene clenched her jaw. 'And if I don't?"
Lucian's expression didn't change, but the air in the room grew heavier. 'Then you'll force my hand." Selene exhaled, forcing herself to stay calm. Lucian wasn't just talking about her anymore. He was talking about Eve.
She took a slow step forward, her voice lower now. 'If you wanted to hurt me, you would've done it already." Lucian studied her, his gaze sharp. 'You're right," he murmured. 'I don't want to hurt you." A pause. 'But that doesn't mean I won't."
Selene swallowed the anger burning in her throat. This was his game; the push and pull, the carefully crafted threats meant to keep her on edge but if there was one thing she knew about Lucian, it was that he never acted without purpose.
Which meant he wanted something from her. Selene forced herself to relax slightly, her voice measured. 'You said this was about choices." She lifted her chin. 'What do you want from me?"
Lucian's smirk widened just slightly as if she had finally asked the right question.
'I want your loyalty." Selene stilled. Lucian continued, his voice smooth. 'You've spent so much time fighting me, running from me, but you haven't stopped to consider that maybe, just maybe you were never meant to run."
Selene clenched her fists. 'You can't force loyalty." Lucian arched his brow. 'Can't I?" Selene's pulse pounded, but she forced herself to stay composed. He was testing her, waiting to see if she would bend under pressure.
She exhaled slowly. 'And if I say no?" Lucian's smirk faded, and then the door behind her opened again. Selene turned, her stomach twisting as two of Lucian's men stepped inside.
Lucian's voice was calm, but there was an edge to it now. 'Then I stop asking." Selene's blood ran cold. This was no longer a conversation but an ultimatum.
Lucian leaned forward slightly, his gaze locked onto hers. 'Make your choice, Selene."
Selene's breath remained steady, but inside, she knew, this was only the beginning.
