The Shattered Veil
The explosion rattled the very foundation of the building making the walls tremble, dust and debris falling from the ceiling as the loud boom echoed through the room.
Selene's head spun from the shockwave, her body flung backward as the force of the explosion threw her off balance.
Her legs gave out, and she hit the floor hard, the wind knocked out of her.
For a moment, everything went silent.
Her ears rang, the air thick with smoke and dust. She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision but the dim light of the room flickered, and in the haze, she could just make out figures moving through the wreckage.
She pushed herself to her knees, gasping for air, her pulse pounding in her ears.
'Selene!" a voice shouted from across the room.
Her eyes snapped toward the source of the sound, it was Aurora's voice.
Her heart skipped, they had found her and she wasn't alone anymore.
Selene's legs wobbled as she stood but the dizziness still clouded her mind as she forced herself to move.
She could see Aurora huddled in a corner, her face covered with soot, but she was alive.
'Aurora!" Selene gasped, rushing toward her, her feet stumbling as she dodged falling debris.
She could hear the sound of footsteps behind her, but she didn't look back. There was no time.
She reached Aurora, helping her to her feet as they both struggled to stay upright.
'What's happening?" Aurora whispered, her voice shaking. 'Who did these?"
'I don't know," Selene replied, her voice hoarse.
She looked around quickly, the room still trembling from the explosion.
The walls were cracked, the door ripped off its hinges and the entire building felt unstable. 'But we need to get out of here. Now."
They both turned to run toward the exit, but as they neared the doorway, another figure stepped into view, blocking their path.
It was the man who had grabbed her before, the one who had been so calm amid the chaos.
His face was still partially obscured, but his expression was unreadable.
He didn't seem concerned by the explosion or the destruction that surrounded them but he simply stood there, his presence commanding and unyielding.
'You're not going anywhere," the man said, his voice low and cold, like a stone dropping into still water.
Selene's heart raced, her instincts screaming at her to run because they had no choice now and this man was the only trap standing in their way.
'What do you want from us?" Selene demanded, her voice hoarse but filled with defiance.
She took a step forward, her fists clenched, ready to face whatever came next.
The man didn't answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes scanning both Selene and Aurora with cold precision.
He didn't seem to care that they were covered in dust or that the building was on the brink of collapse. His focus was on them, and them alone.
'I don't want anything from you," the man replied finally. 'I'm here to make sure you understand what's really happening."
'What's happening?" Aurora asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She was trembling and her wide eyes were filled with confusion and fear.
The man's lips curled into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. 'You've been running from the truth and everything that's been set in motion long before you even knew it."
Selene's heart thudded in her chest. 'The truth?" she repeated, her voice a mix of frustration and disbelief.
She had been running for her life, trying to stay ahead of those hunting her, trying to survive but this man was telling her that she had been running from something bigger, something she didn't even understand.
'You think it's just about you," the man continued, his voice like gravel. 'But it's never just been about you. You're just a piece of a much larger puzzle."
Selene didn't respond right away as the words he spoke were like shards of glass, cutting through the confusion and fear that had been building inside her for so long.
It felt like she was on the edge of understanding something crucial, but it remained just out of reach.
Before she could gather her thoughts, the sound of more footsteps echoed in the distance.
This time, it wasn't the footsteps of one person–it was the heavy, purposeful tread of a group and they were closing in.
The man didn't seem surprised. He didn't flinch or move, his eyes never leaving Selene's. He simply watched her, waiting.
Selene glanced at Aurora, and for a brief moment, the two women shared a look.
Aurora's face was pale, her eyes wide with fear, but she didn't say anything. There was no time for words but action.
'We need to get out of here," Selene said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her throat. 'Now."
But just as they were about to move, the man raised his hand, a signal, to whom, she wasn't sure, but she knew it meant they were trapped.
'It's already too late."
The sound of doors slamming echoed in the hallway behind them.
More figures appeared but this time moving swiftly, blocking all exits, there was no escape and they had nowhere to run.
Aurora gasped, her hand gripping Selene's arm. 'What are we going to do?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
Selene's mind raced, she had no plan, no backup, and the entire room felt like it was closing in on her, the walls pressing in as she realized there was no way out and she couldn't face this on her own.
The man in front of her stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. 'You think you're the only one who matters?" he said, his voice cold and final. 'You're not, this has always been bigger than you."
Selene's heart skipped a beat. 'What do you mean?" she demanded, her voice shaky with a mix of fear and determination. 'What do you want from me?"
The man didn't answer right away. Instead, he turned to face the approaching figures.
They were getting closer now, their silhouettes growing clearer. It was only a matter of time before they would surround and trap her.
And then, in the distance, the sound of gunshots rang out, sharp and sudden.
The world seemed to shift. Selene's body tensed, ready to react, but she didn't know what was happening.
The man looked over his shoulder, his expression unreadable.'We have to move."
Before Selene could ask another question, the figure moved with lightning speed, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her toward the back exit.
She had no choice but to follow, her heart racing as her feet scrambled to keep up.
Who had fired the shots? Were they allies or enemies?
As they reached the exit, the door flew open with a violent force but there, standing in the doorway, was another figure—a new person.
And just as Selene's mind screamed at her to run, a voice echoed in the dark. 'Don't even think about it."
