The Weight of Survival
Selene sat by the bed, her fingers curled tightly in her lap as she watched the slow, shallow rise and fall of Caleb's chest.
His breathing was uneven with each breath, a fragile testament to the fact that he was still alive.
The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast faint shadows across his pale skin, highlighting the bruises and the fresh bandages wrapped around his shoulder and he looked so different from the last time she had seen him.
His face was leaner, his body worn down by something more than just physical pain because Lucian had done something to him and she didn't know what, but she knew the weight of suffering when she saw it.
The room was silent except for the occasional ticking of the antique clock mounted on the far wall.
The doctor had left an hour ago after stabilizing Caleb's condition, and Eve had stepped out shortly after, leaving Selene alone with the weight of everything that had just happened in the dimly lit space.
She pressed a hand against her forehead, willing herself to think clearly. Lucian had shot him. Had watched him bleed out on the floor and still wielded his control like a blade pressed to her throat. He had ordered the doctor to treat Caleb, not out of mercy, but because Caleb was a loose thread, and Lucian didn't like loose threads.
Selene's hands clenched; she had wanted to fight, to lash out, to hurt him the way he had hurt her, but she had known it wouldn't have mattered because Lucian didn't flinch at violence, he welcomed it but the only thing that unsettled him was losing control and that meant she had to be careful.
She exhaled slowly, turning her attention back to Caleb.
His face was slack with exhaustion, his breathing still labored, but at least he was here and he was alive.
Her fingers brushed against the edge of the blanket draped over him. 'What happened to you?" she whispered. She hadn't expected an answer, but then, his eyelids fluttered and Selene's breath caught.
His lips parted slightly, his voice hoarse and barely audible. 'Selene…" She swallowed hard, leaning closer. 'I'm here." Caleb's fingers twitched against the sheets.
His eyes were heavy, unfocused, as they met hers. 'You…" His throat bobbed as he struggled to form words but Selene reached for the glass of water on the nightstand, slipping a hand behind his head to help him drink and he sipped slowly, wincing slightly before letting his head rest back against the pillow.
His breathing was steadied a little, but his expression remained clouded with exhaustion. 'How…?" Selene hesitated. 'You shouldn't talk yet, you need to rest."
Caleb's jaw tightened, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to reach for her but didn't have the strength. 'How did I get here?" Selene exhaled softly. 'You found me."And a shadow crossed Caleb's expression as he blinked slowly as if trying to recall something just beyond his reach. 'Lucian." Selene's stomach twisted. 'Yes."
Caleb swallowed hard and his gaze darkened because the memories were coming back to him but Selene didn't speak, she wanted to give him time, to let him process what had happened, but part of her also feared what he would say next.
Then, his fingers curled weakly against the sheets, his jaw clenching. 'He… he told me you were dead."Selene's breath hitched.
Caleb's throat tightened as he exhaled shakily. 'I thought—" His voice broke slightly. 'I thought I lost you."
Selene's chest ached at the raw pain in his voice and her expression was reading something like, how many times had Lucian fed him lies and how long had he believed them?
She shook her head slowly. 'I'm still here."Caleb swallowed hard, his fingers twitching against the blanket. 'I looked for you." His eyes were glassy, his exhaustion making his words slow and strained. 'I never stopped." Selene's throat tightened.
He had searched for her even when Lucian had tried to erase her then she reached forward, taking his trembling hand in hers. 'I know," she whispered and Caleb's eyes flickered with relief, exhaustion, and sorrow then, his body tensed. 'He won't let you go."
Selene's fingers curled slightly. 'I know."Caleb exhaled slowly, his gaze locking onto hers. 'Then we have to be smarter." Selene's chest tightened, even injured, even barely able to keep his eyes open, he was thinking of a way out.
She swallowed the lump in her throat. 'You need to heal first."Caleb's fingers squeezed hers weakly. 'And then?"
Selene met his gaze. 'Then we end this."
His lips parted slightly, but exhaustion dragged him under before he could respond and his hand went limp in hers, his breathing settling into an unsteady rhythm but Selene didn't move, she simply sat there, her mind racing.
They had to get out but escape wasn't just about running anymore because Lucian had played with their lives, he had manipulated, deceived, and controlled every step of their existence so if they left, he would come after them.
Selene's pulse pounded; this time, they had to do more than escape-they had to destroy him.
A soft knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts and she turned as Eve stepped inside, her gaze flickering toward Caleb's unconscious form before settling on Selene.
'You're going to do something reckless, aren't you?" Eve murmured, Selene's jaw tightened. 'I don't have a choice."
Eve studied her for a long moment before exhaling softly. 'Then let's make sure you don't get yourself killed."
Selene's chest tightened because Eve wasn't stopping her, she was helping her then Selene nodded once and this was just the beginning of a new fight.
