The Missed Step
Selene's breath came slow and steady, though her pulse thundered beneath her skin as the dim light from the hallway cast Lucian's figure in shadow, making him appear larger and more menacing, his stance was deceptively casual, but the sharp gleam in his eyes told her everything; he knew.
The key in her pocket pressed against her skin, a reminder of how close she had come, and the glass doors leading to the garden were only a few feet away, her freedom had been within her grasp and now, she was caught.
Lucian took a single step forward while the soft tap of his shoe against the marble floor echoed in the empty corridor producing a sound that sent a shiver down her spine.
His hands were tucked neatly into his pockets, and his expression was unreadable but Selene knew better, he was furious.
'Tell me," he said, his voice smooth, controlled, 'where exactly were you planning to go?" But Selene didn't answer.
Lucian tilted his head slightly, studying her with the same detached curiosity a hunter had for a trapped animal. 'You don't honestly believe I wouldn't notice?"
She kept her gaze level, refusing to let him see any trace of fear. 'You must be slipping, then," she said coolly. 'Because I got this far." Lucian's smirk was slow, deliberate. 'Far enough to fail."Selene's jaw tightened.
He took another step forward, his body language shifting slightly, becoming something heavier, and darker. 'You never stop pushing, do you?" His voice was quiet, almost thoughtful. 'Always testing, always waiting for a weakness."Selene clenched her fists. 'And you make it too easy."
Lucian chuckled, but the sound was void of humor. 'You have no idea what easy is." His tone hardened. 'Turn around, Selene." But she didn't move, Lucian's smirk faded. 'Don't make me repeat myself."
A war raged inside her, telling her to run, fight, or submit either way; each option was a different kind of loss but Selene had never been one to surrender.
She exhaled sharply, then she moved forward lunging for the door but Lucian was faster, and before her fingers could even brush the handle, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, yanking her back.
She gasped as her feet left the ground making her body crash against Lucian's chest, his grip was like iron, unyielding, his breath warm against her ear.
'Wrong move," he murmured but Selene twisted, elbowing him hard in the ribs making his hold loosened slightly, but not enough. She spun, bringing her knee up, aiming for his stomach but Lucian anticipated it.
In one fluid motion, he grabbed her wrist, twisting it just enough to make her gasp in pain as he forced her back against the wall, pinning her with the weight of his body.
Her breath came fast now, adrenaline burning through her veins but Lucian's grip remained firm, his fingers curling around her wrists, keeping them trapped between them. His eyes flickered with anger, and amusement while Selene glared at him. 'Let me go."
Lucian's lips curled slightly, his voice a whisper against her skin. 'No." Her pulse hammered as she struggled, but he didn't budge.
He leaned in slightly allowing his breath to brush against her cheek. 'What were you hoping to find out there?" His voice was quiet but dangerous. 'An escape or a way to outmaneuver me?" His eyes locked onto hers. 'Or were you just desperate enough to run without a plan?"Selene's chest rose and fell rapidly but she refused to let him get inside her head.
She exhaled slowly. 'What does it matter, you caught me." Lucian's fingers flexed slightly, tightening around her wrists for just a second before relaxing again. 'Yes, I did." Then a beat of silence stretched between them, heavy with tension.
Then, without warning, Lucian released her, Selene stumbled slightly but caught herself before she could fall.
She straightened but her hands still aching from his grip while her eyes burned into his, searching for some sign of what he was thinking or what he would do next.
Lucian adjusted the cuffs of his sleeves, as if the entire altercation had been nothing more than an inconvenience then, he turned slightly toward the glass doors, his expression unreadable.
'I'm almost disappointed," he murmured, Selene frowned. 'In what?"He glanced back at her. 'In you."Her fingers curled into fists. 'You expected me to give up?" Lucian shook his head slowly. 'I expected you to be smarter."
Selene's breath hitched, but she masked it with a sharp glare. 'You think I don't know what you're doing?" She stepped closer, defiant. 'You want me to doubt myself. You want me to hesitate."
Lucian smiled, but it was anything but kind. 'And yet, you're still standing here."Selene exhaled sharply. 'What now?"Lucian studied her for a moment before turning fully toward her, his voice dangerously soft. 'Now, you learn."
A sinking feeling settled in her stomach as Lucian took a slow step forward. 'You think you can keep testing me, pushing boundaries, playing this game on your terms." His eyes darkened. 'But you don't get to decide how this ends, Selene."
She swallowed, forcing herself to hold her ground. 'And you do?"Lucian nodded once. 'Yes." Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist again, but this time, his grip wasn't tight, it was almost… gentle and the shift in energy sent a shiver down her spine.
Lucian leaned in slightly, his voice a murmur against her ear. 'You made a mistake tonight." Selene forced herself to breathe evenly. 'And what are you going to do about it?" Lucian smirked. 'You'll see soon enough."
Then, before she could respond, he pulled back and released her once again, Selene stared at him, her mind racing; why let her go? Why not drag her back immediately?
Lucian took a slow step back, his gaze still locked onto hers. 'Go back to your room, Selene." But she hesitated, making Lucian arched his brow. 'Or would you rather I carry you there?"
Her jaw clenched, she refused to give him that satisfaction, and without another word, she turned on her heel and strode past him and the moment she stepped into the corridor, the door behind her locked.
Selene inhaled deeply, forcing her heart to slow, something had changed tonight, Lucian had let her go but not without a warning and it had to be part of his plan.
She reached into her sleeve, feeling the smooth edges of the hidden key, it was still there. Her lips parted slightly as a new thought struck her.
He wasn't worried about her escaping because he knew something she didn't so the realization sent a cold shiver through her.
Selene exhaled slowly, steadying herself because no matter what he thought or what he planned, this wasn't over and she would make sure of it.
