The Edge Of Survival
The figure in the doorway bloomed like a shadow, blocking the only exit making Selene's heart raced as she felt the suffocating weight of the moment.
The building was shaking, the walls creaking with the strain of the explosions.
Every second felt like an eternity as the man—no, the thing stood there, watching them. The air around them was thick with dust, the heat of the flames licking at their backs.
Selene felt Axel's weight against her, his breath was shallow and his body limp. He was still alive, but barely.
Her hands were trembling, and the sharp pain in her arm reminded her that she was running on empty but there was no time to stop, no time to think about the consequences.
'Move." Selene's voice was a whisper, but it held an edge of desperation.
She tugged at Axel's arm, trying to pull him forward, but the man in the doorway didn't move.
His eyes were cold, unfeeling, and as they locked onto hers, she felt a chill settle in her chest.
'You won't make it." The man's voice was low, almost soothing, but with a dangerous edge that made Selene's skin crawl. 'It's too late for you."
Selene's breath caught in her throat. Too late? What did he mean? The explosion had already set the building in motion, but was he talking about something worse? Something more dangerous than what they had already faced?
'You don't have a choice." The man took a step forward, his gaze never leaving hers.
He wasn't rushing, his movements were methodological like the kind of person who already knew how this was going to end.
Selene swallowed hard, forcing herself to focus. She couldn't let fear take over. They still had a chance and she wasn't going to give up.
She looked around the room, searching for anything that could give her an advantage. The walls were crumbling, and the exit was blocked. What now?
'We're not done yet." She gritted her teeth and pulled Axel again, hoping against hope that the man in front of her would move but he didn't.
The man smiled, but it wasn't a smile of kindness. It was cruel and knowing. 'You really think you can escape this?"
He took another step closer, his voice lowering to a deadly whisper. 'You're not running from me, you're running from what's coming."
Selene's blood ran cold. What was he talking about?
Before she could react, the sound of footsteps behind her made her turn. Another figure, this one was larger and more imposing, stepped into view.
The room seemed to grow even darker with the dust growing heavier.
There was a shift in the atmosphere like the walls were closing in.
This man was even more intimidating than the first. His eyes were hidden behind a pair of dark sunglasses, but Selene could feel the weight of his gaze even from a distance.
He didn't say anything, but his presence was enough to make her heart race even faster.
'It's time to make a choice, Selene." The voice came from behind her, but this time it wasn't Lucian, this man was different, his tone was final, as if he were delivering a sentence.
'You can keep running, or you can stay and face what's coming for you."
Her mind raced as she processed his words.
'Axel, we have to go," Selene whispered urgently, but Axel barely stirred. His body was still limp and his pulse was faint. She couldn't leave him behind.
The men continued to move closer, the air growing colder with each step. Selene's heart raced. They had no way out. No escape.
'Please." Selene's voice cracked, desperation flooding through her. She looked at the men, but they didn't seem to care, they were like stone with unmoved feelings.
'You have no idea what you've started." The man with the sunglasses spoke again, his voice deep, resonant. 'This is bigger than you."
A sudden crack sounded from above, and the floor beneath their feet trembled. The ceiling started to cave in, and a shower of dust and debris fell around them.
Selene gasped and grabbed Axel, pulling him closer to her, and shielding him from the falling rubble.
She stumbled back, her body shaking as the walls continued to groan, threatening to collapse entirely.
The explosion had set off a chain reaction, and everything was coming down.
'Move!" Lucian shouted. His eyes were wild, his expression now one of urgency.
He stepped back, watching them both with a strange mixture of disdain and curiosity.
The building shook again, this time more violently and pieces of the ceiling were falling, and Selene could hear the walls cracking and splintering.
She knew it wouldn't be long before the entire structure collapsed.
'Axel!" Selene shouted, her voice desperate as she tried to shake him awake, but it was too late as he was fading in and out of consciousness, unable to stand on his own.
'You should have stayed out of this, Selene." The man in the sunglasses spoke again, stepping forward. 'It's over. You're not walking away from this."
Selene's breath quickened as panic set in, her mind raced as she searched for a way to escape, but there was no way out as the walls were caving in and the only way forward was blocked by these men.
She turned toward the exit again and the door was still there but the way was blocked.
'Get ready." The man with sunglasses said, his eyes narrowing as the chaos around them escalated, his voice was like ice, cold and final.
Just then, the sound of more footsteps echoed from behind her, and a familiar voice rang out through the smoke-filled air. 'Selene!"
Her head whipped around, and for a brief moment, the world stopped.
There, standing in the doorway, was a new figure who happened to be someone she recognized but couldn't place immediately but his presence, his stance was enough to stop the men in front of her in their tracks.
As the men raised their weapons, the entire building seemed to shake once more, as if it were about to fall apart completely.
