Secrets Behind The Seen
Selene stood in the middle of the grand ballroom, the folded note burning in her palm. "Your enemy is closer than you think."
The words sent a sharp chill through her spine. She had spent years building walls, ensuring that no one could touch her, that no one could ever betray her again. Yet, here she was-being warned about a threat that was already inside her world.
Her fingers tightened around the note before she slipped it into the pocket of her gown.
Camille approached, her expression unreadable. "What was that about?"
Selene forced her face into a mask of indifference. "Nothing important."
Camille raised an eyebrow. "I've known you for years, Selene. You don't tense up over 'nothing important.'"
Selene glanced around the room, scanning the faces of powerful men and women in tailored suits and designer gowns, sipping champagne as if their world wasn't built on backstabbing deals and ruthless ambition.
Somewhere among them, someone was watching her, someone was waiting for her to fall. She turned back to Camille, lowering her voice. "Not here."
Camille nodded once, understanding without needing further explanation. "Then we leave now."
Selene's gaze flickered to where Aurora stood beside Damian, their hands weren't touching, but they were close-too close. Aurora's face was carefully composed, but Selene saw the truth in her eyes.
She was pretending.
Selene exhaled slowly, pushing back the wave of irritation threatening to rise she didn't have time for distractions. Not tonight.
She turned on her heel and walked toward the exit, Camille close behind her.
The ride back to her penthouse was silent.
Camille sat across from her in the car, watching as Selene twirled a crystal glass between her fingers, the untouched whiskey inside barely moving.
Finally, Camille sighed. "Are you going to tell me what's going on?"
Selene didn't respond immediately. She trusted Camille more than anyone but trust was fragile, and tonight's warning had made her second-guess everything.
After a long pause, she reached into her pocket and handed Camille the note. Camille unfolded it, her eyes scanning the words.
Then she frowned. Selene watched her carefully. "You recognize the handwriting?"
Camille's lips pressed into a thin line. "No. But whoever wrote this wants you paranoid." Selene's voice was cool. "That's because I should be."
Camille exhaled. "Selene, if someone inside your world is betraying you, we need to find out who." Selene leaned back against the leather seat, her gaze fixed on the passing city lights. "We will."
Camille studied her. "Do you think it's Damian?" Selene's jaw clenched. "Damian is an opportunist. He doesn't just take what he wants,he plays games first. If this was him, he'd be enjoying it too much to stay quiet."
Camille nodded. "Then we're looking at someone else." Selene's fingers tapped against her glass. "Someone who wants me to think they're helping."
Camille exhaled. "Aurora."
Selene's heart clenched for a fraction of a second, but her face remained unreadable. "I don't know yet."
Camille hesitated. "You still trust her?"
Selene didn't answer because she didn't know. She wanted to but Aurora had already left her once and this time, if she betrayed her again, Selene wouldn't forgive her.
The car slowed as they pulled up to her penthouse. Camille stepped out first, but Selene lingered for a moment, her fingers tightening around her glass before she set it down and followed.
As she stepped into the elevator, she forced her mind to sharpen. She needed answers and she needed them now.
Hours Later
Selene poured over files in her office, her eyes scanning documents, records, and internal communications from the past few months. If there was a leak, she would find it.
The penthouse was silent except for the faint hum of the city below. Then, the intercom buzzed.
She frowned. No one should be visiting this late.
She pressed the button. "Yes?"
The doorman's voice came through, steady. "Miss Laurent, you have a visitor."
Selene's eyes narrowed. "I'm not expecting anyone."
She pause. Then-"She says it's urgent."
Selene's jaw tightened. "Who is it?"
Another pause. Then, a voice she wasn't expecting. "Selene." Aurora voice Selene's breath slowed.
She exhaled, pressing the intercom button again. "Let her up."
Moments later, there was a knock at her door.
Selene walked over, hesitating for only a second before opening it.
Aurora stood in the hallway, her arms wrapped around herself, her expression unreadable.
For the first time that night, she looked tired.
Selene leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. "You have a bad habit of showing up uninvited." Aurora sighed. "You weren't answering my calls."
Selene raised an eyebrow. "Maybe there's a reason for that." Aurora swallowed, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation.
Selene closed the door, watching as Aurora paced across the room before finally turning to face her.
"I need to talk to you." Selene tilted her head. "Then talk."
Aurora hesitated. "I think Damian is planning Something dangerous."
Selene exhaled sharply. "You think?"
Aurora's jaw tightened. "I know you don't trust me and I don't blame you but I'm not lying about this."
Selene studied her carefully. "Then tell me what you know."
Aurora hesitated for only a second before she spoke. "He's setting something up. He's been making calls and he's watching you."
Selene's blood turned to ice.
Aurora continued. "He's been asking questions. About your company. About your board members." She paused, then swallowed. "About your weaknesses."
Selene's pulse remained steady, but inside, she was already preparing for war she stepped forward slowly, her voice calm. "And what do you think my weaknesses are?"
Aurora's golden eyes met hers. "Me."
Selene's breath caught for a fraction of a second. Then she smirked. "At least you're aware."
Aurora exhaled, shaking her head. "Selene, I'm serious." Selene leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "So am I."
Aurora hesitated. "I need you to trust me."
Selene's gaze was unreadable. "And why would I do that?"
Aurora inhaled sharply. "Because I might be the only person who can stop him."
Selene studied her for a long moment then, the lights flickered. Aurora tensed. "What was that?"
Selene turned toward the windows. Then the power cut out completely and darkness swallowed the room.
Aurora's breath hitched. "Selene-" Selene held up a hand, silent. Something is wrong.
A second later, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She pulled it out, her heart pounding as she read the text message flashing across the screen.
Unknown Number: You waited too long. A crash echoed through the penthouse.
Aurora grabbed Selene's arm, her voice sharp. "Selene, what's happening?"
Selene's eyes narrowed as she whispered, "We're not alone."
