A Case Of Retribution
The silence in the room was suffocating, thick with the weight of her failure as Selene sat at the edge of the bed, her back straight and her hands resting lightly on her lap, though every muscle in her body remained coiled, tense, and ready.
The events of the night replayed in her mind like a cruel echo, every step toward the garden, every breath of fleeting hope, only to be dragged back into the shadows by Lucian's relentless grip.
She had known the risks, known that defying him would come at a cost, yet she had taken that chance anyway but the outcome was clear, he had caught her, and now, she had to face the consequences.
The walls of her room seemed smaller tonight, pressing in as if Lucian's presence lingered in the air, watching and waiting.
She had expected him to act immediately, to punish her for trying to escape, but instead, he had let her walk back here on her own, that alone unsettled her more than any immediate retaliation.
Her fingers curled slightly into her sleeve, the hidden key still tucked safely in her sleeve and that was her only advantage but if he already knew about the garden, about whatever was buried there, then would the key even help, or had she risked everything for nothing?
Then a sharp knock at the door shattered the silence and Selene stiffened while the door unlocked with a soft click, and when it swung open, Eve stood there with her unreadable expression and the flickering light from the hallway cast a shadow over her face, highlighting the tension in her features but Selene didn't move.
Eve exhaled slowly. 'Come with me."The command was simple, but the weight behind it was unmistakable, it was like a ticking time bomb.
Selene forced herself to stand, smoothing the fabric of her dress as if that small act could prepare her for whatever awaited, she followed Eve into the hallway, her heartbeat steady, but her mind racing.
Lucian wouldn't be waiting in the study this time, he had something else planned.
The air in the corridor was cold, unnervingly still as the path they took wasn't the familiar one leading to Lucian's office, nor was it toward the dining room or lounge, Eve was leading her somewhere new.
Selene's lips parted slightly, but she held her tongue because asking questions wouldn't change what was coming.
They turned a corner, descending a narrow flight of stairs.
The temperature dropped further as the walls turned from polished stone to reinforced concrete and it was only when they reached the bottom that Selene realized where they were; the lower levels.
A place she had never seen, but one that had always been there; silent and hidden beneath the surface.
Eve finally stopped in front of a large metal door, its surface smooth but ominous, she turned toward Selene, her expression softer now, but not reassuring.'Whatever happens in there," Eve said quietly, 'don't let him see your fear."
Selene's pulse quickened, but she gave a small nod then Eve knocked once and the door unlocked, she pushed it open, stepping aside to let Selene through.
Selene walked inside only to see Lucian already waiting.
The room was stark, dimly lit by overhead fixtures that cast long shadows against the concrete walls.
It wasn't a cell, not in the traditional sense, but it was no grand hall either but a space designed for control and stripping away illusions.
Lucian stood near the far end, dressed in black, his hands were tucked into his pockets, a typical picture of calm but Selene knew better, calm was just another mask.
She kept her posture straight as the door closed behind her.
Lucian studied her for a moment, his gaze slow, deliberate then, he gestured toward the chair positioned in the center of the room. 'Sit." But Selene didn't move immediately. 'And if I don't?" Lucian exhaled softly, tilting his head. 'Then I'll make you."
The weight of his words pressed against her skin, but she refused to let them sink in, then she walked forward, keeping her movements controlled, and lowered herself onto the chair.
Lucian stepped closer, his presence overwhelming the space between them. 'Do you know why you're here?" Selene met his gaze, unwavering.'Because I tested you."Lucian smiled, but there was no warmth in it. 'And do you regret it?"
Selene's fingers curled slightly against her lap. 'No."Lucian chuckled, shaking his head. 'Of course you don't."A long silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken tension.
Then, Lucian's expression shifted, the amusement fading into a heavy cold.
'You seem to think this is a game, Selene." His voice was softer now, more dangerous. 'That no matter how many times you push, there will always be another chance."
Selene exhaled. 'And what are you going to do? Lock me in a smaller room and take away more of my freedom?" But Lucian's lips curled slightly. 'You mistake leniency for weakness." Selene's jaw clenched. 'And you mistake control for power."
Lucian took another step forward. 'That's where you're wrong." He lowered his voice. 'Power is knowing when to be patient when to let someone believe they have a choice… only to take it away when it matters most."
Selene's breath caught, but she refused to let him see the shift in her emotions, he was toying with her, conditioning her to doubt herself.
Lucian leaned down slightly, his face was inches from hers. 'You should have waited, Selene, you should have learned how to survive here first." Selene's throat tightened, of course, he wasn't going to let this go.
Lucian straightened. 'Stand up." Selene hesitated, but when she didn't move fast enough, he grabbed her wrist, pulling her to her feet, his grip was firm, unrelenting, but not brutal.
Selene met his gaze, unflinchingly studying her for a moment, then, almost lazily, he lifted a hand and traced the edge of her jaw with his fingers, the touch was light and deceptively gentle; another of his tactics or tests but Selene didn't move.
Then Lucian's voice dropped lower. 'You'll learn, Selene."A shiver ran down her spine, but not from fear, from rage.
Lucian smirked as if he had read the thought in her mind then, without warning, he let go of her and Selene inhaled sharply, but she didn't step back.
Lucian exhaled, glancing toward the door. 'Take her back." The door opened and Eve stood there with her impassive face.
Selene forced herself to walk forward with every step feeling heavier than the last. She passed Eve without looking back, her mind still spinning from the encounter.
The moment she stepped into the corridor, she heard Lucian's final words.
'Let's see how long you last."Selene's heart pounded because this was just the beginning of her cage.
