The Stranger’s Truth
The figure before Selene was a shadow against the harsh city and headlights from the car illuminated his form as he stepped into the alley, his silhouette tall and imposing.
His face was partially hidden in shadow, but his presence was undeniable and one thing was for sure, he wasn't here by accident, not in a place like this.
Selene's heart raced, every instinct screaming at her to run but she could feel the weight of the gun in her hand, the cool metal of it comforting her, but it did little to ease the growing unease inside her.
Her mind spun with questions; who is this person? And why is he following them? Is he an ally or is he another obstacle in the dangerous path they'd been forced onto?
'You're too late," the man said, his voice deep and calm, his tone laced with a quiet authority that made Selene's blood run cold.
Selene took a step back, her gaze flicking to the shadows of the alley, Axel and Aurora were nowhere in sight.
She was alone with this figure, and her options were running out fast.
She needed answers, but she wasn't sure if this man could provide them or if he was just another part of the web of lies and deceit she'd been caught in.
'Who are you?" Selene demanded, her voice sharp, trying to project strength despite the fear that gnawed at her insides, she couldn't afford to show weakness, not now, not when everything was on the line.
The man stepped forward, slowly, his movements deliberate.
'I'm the one who's been keeping an eye on you," he said, his voice low but carrying a weight of something darker.
'And now, it's time you understood just how far you've gone."
Selene's grip on her gun tightened. 'What are you talking about?" she asked, her mind racing.
She couldn't fathom how this man knew anything about her, let alone why he was here now.
Had someone sent him? Was he working with Lucian or Damian? The possibilities felt endless, and none of them gave her any peace.
The man tilted his head slightly, almost as if he were studying her.
'You've been running for a long time, Selene.
Running from something, or someone but the truth is, you've been running toward something, too but the question is: do you know what that is?"
Selene's breath caught in her throat.
He wasn't making any sense. 'What do you mean?" she demanded. 'I'm not running toward anything. I'm trying to survive."
The man chuckled darkly and the sound sent a chill down her spine. 'Survival?" he repeated, his voice almost mocking.
'You're not surviving, Selene. You're part of something much bigger than you think and you're not going to escape it."
His words landed heavy, like a weight crashing onto her chest.
What did he mean? She had been running for so long, doing whatever it took to stay one step ahead of the people who wanted to destroy her.
But now, this man was telling her it was all part of something bigger. Something she couldn't outrun?
Before she could respond, the man stepped closer, closing the distance between them.
She instinctively raised the gun, her finger hovering over the trigger but he didn't flinch.
'I didn't come here to fight you," he said softly, almost as if he were speaking to himself.
'I came here to show you the truth because whether you want to believe it or not, you're already too deep in this to get out and you've already made your choice."
Selene's mind reeled, what choice? She had never chosen any of this but she had been dragged into this fight, thrown into a world that was far too dangerous for someone like her.
But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that the truth–the real truth–had always been just out of reach.
She took a step back, her eyes narrowing. 'What truth?" she asked again, her voice strained, filled with frustration.
The man didn't answer immediately, instead, he took another step closer and Selene could see his face more clearly now.
His features were sharp, his expression calm, but there was something unsettling in his eyes; a coldness that made her skin crawl.
'Do you remember the moment you first set foot in this game?" he asked.
His voice was quieter now, almost like he was speaking directly to her.
'Do you remember the first time you realized this wasn't just about survival? That this was about power? And that you, Selene, were just a pawn in someone else's game?"
The words hit her like a punch to the gut making her breath catch in her throat and for a moment, she couldn't respond.
She had always known she was being used, that she was a player in someone else's world but to hear it out loud like this, felt different and felt real.
'You've been part of this all along," he continued, his voice softer now.
'You've been fighting for survival, yes but you've also been fighting for something you don't even fully understand and that's why you're in danger."
The weight of his words settled heavily on her shoulders.
She had always known she was a pawn and she'd accepted it but to think that the whole game had been designed around her, that someone else had planned her every move–it was too much to grasp.
A sharp noise cut through her thoughts.
The unmistakable sound of a car's engine roared to life in the distance, cutting through the silence of the alley.
The man turned slightly, his eyes scanning the street as he heard it too.
Selene didn't wait for him to make a move as the urgency of the sound of the engine closing in had her instincts on high alert and she knew they didn't have much time.
'Who are you?" she demanded, her voice rising in desperation. 'What do you want from me?"
He looked at her with those cold, calculating eyes, his expression unreadable. 'What I want doesn't matter," he said. 'The real question is, what do you want?"
The question hung in the air, unanswered, now the sound of the car's engine grew louder and closer, the tires screeching against the road. Whoever was in that car wasn't here to help.
Selene had no choice now other than to act fast, she couldn't afford to stand here, waiting for answers she might never get.
The man, the car, everything was closing in on her and there was no time for questions.
Without another word, Selene turned and ran, her legs pushing harder than ever as the engine sound blared louder behind her.
She didn't know where she was headed but the alley was growing tighter and she could feel the walls closing in.
The figure in black didn't follow immediately, instead, she heard him speak, his words still echoing through her mind.
'You can't outrun your destiny, Selene. It's already decided."
