No Turning Back
The world around Selene was a blur of dust, smoke, and crumbling concrete.
The explosion had sent a shockwave through the alley, and debris rained down from above.
She barely managed to shield Axel from the worst of it, but the force of the blast had knocked her off her feet. Her heart pounded in her chest while the sound deafening in her ears as she struggled to rise.
Axel's weak grip on her hand was the only thing keeping her tethered to reality.
His breathing was shallow, his body trembling, but he was still alive and that was all that mattered.
'Axel, stay with me." Selene's voice was rough, barely audible over the chaos around them.
She leaned over him, her hands shaking as she tried to lift him, but he was heavy, and her strength was waning.
She had to move him, get him away from the danger, but she was running out of time.
The ground beneath them trembled again, and the entire street seemed to buckle under the weight of the destruction.
The air was thick with the scent of burning wood and metal, the flames from the explosion were licking at the sides of the buildings.
The sound of collapsing structures echoed through the alley, and Selene could feel the walls closing in on them.
'We have to move, Axel." Selene's voice cracked as she urged him forward, but he was barely responsive.
She could feel the weight of his body dragging her down, his pulse faint but steady.
The sound of footsteps grew louder in the distance, and Selene froze.
She couldn't tell if it was the men who had been chasing them or if it was someone else, but the sense of impending danger was suffocating.
She glanced around, her heart racing, searching for any way out, but the alley was blocked by rubble trapping them in one place.
'Selene, you need to stop." Axel's voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a weight that made her stop in her tracks.
She turned to him, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the pain in his eyes.
'We need to get out of here, Axel." Selene shook her head, her chest tight with anxiety but Axel's expression was different now–resigned, almost calm in the face of their peril.
'It's too late, Selene." His voice was hoarse, but it held a finality that made her stomach drop. 'You've fought so hard but it's over."
'No, it's not over. We're not done yet!" Selene shouted, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and determination.
She wasn't ready to give up, not when they were so close to escaping but before she could continue, a figure stepped into the alley ahead of them.
Selene's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the silhouette of a tall man, his face hidden in shadows.
She couldn't see his eyes, but the air around him was heavy with malice.
He wasn't alone, behind him, there were more men, all armed, all moving with purpose.
Selene's breath caught in her throat as she reached for her knife, the only weapon she had left.
She wasn't going down without a fight but as she took a step back, the man in front of her raised his hand, and the men behind him stopped.
'You've done well to get this far, Selene." The man's voice was cold, smooth, like steel. 'But this is where it ends."
Selene's grip tightened around the knife, she was afraid but she had to stay strong for Axel as he was counting on her.
'I'm not going anywhere with you." Her voice was steady, though the fear gnawed at her insides.
The man stepped closer, his gaze never leaving hers. 'You don't have a choice." His voice was almost sad as if he felt pity for her. 'You're already caught in a web you can't escape."
Selene took another step back, trying to keep distance between her and the men, but the alley was too narrow.
Axel was still leaning on her, his strength failing him with every breath.
She could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her chest.
'You're wrong, I still have a choice." Her voice was fierce, but inside, she could feel the uncertainty creeping in.
She had no plan or backup but she wouldn't surrender.
The man's lips curled into a smile, but it was empty, devoid of warmth. 'You think you have a choice?" He took another step forward. 'This is bigger than you, Selene."
The walls around them seemed to close in, and Selene could feel the heat from the flames getting closer. She had to make a decision-fight or run but there was nowhere to run.
The men behind the man in front of her shifted, taking positions with their weapons raised.
It was clear they weren't here for negotiations but to finish what had started.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash from above them.
The ceiling of the alley collapsed in on itself, sending a shower of debris down toward them.
The men in front of her scattered, trying to shield themselves, but Selene didn't have time to react.
With one swift movement, she pulled Axel toward her, ducking just as a large piece of debris crashed to the ground beside them.
The explosion of dust and rubble left the alley filled with chaos. She could feel the earth shaking beneath her, and the sound of crumbling buildings echoed in the distance.
'We need to move, Axel." Selene's voice was urgent, but Axel didn't respond. He was barely conscious now, his body limp in her arms.
The men were regrouping, their movements were quick and precise and they weren't going to let her get away.
She could see the weapons in their hands, the cold determination in their eyes, and in her mind she concluded this was it.
'Selene!" A voice rang out from the distance, a familiar voice that made her blood run cold. She didn't have to look to know who it was. 'Lucian."
He had been following them all along, and now, it seemed, the game was over. Whatever she had been running from was closing in, and Selene was running out of options.
'Don't even think about it." Lucian's voice was laced with authority, his steps echoing through the alley as he advanced toward them. 'You can't escape this."
The moment felt like it was stretching into infinity as Selene couldn't run and couldn't fight but just as Lucian stepped closer, a sudden, blinding light flooded the alley and then everything went black.
