The Path Ahead
Selene's heart was pounding, her breath shallow as she dragged Axel through the doorway.
The light outside was harsh after the darkness of the building, but it wasn't enough to make her stop. They had escaped the immediate danger, but she knew it wasn't over.
The outside world was no better. The sky was overcast, and the ground beneath her feet was cracked, and uneven.
The streets were eerily quiet and there were no signs of life, no sounds of normalcy.
The city had fallen into chaos, and she could feel the weight of it pressing down on her.
The world outside the collapsing building wasn't much safer than the nightmare she had just escaped.
'Hold on, Axel," Selene whispered, her voice shaking as she glanced down at him.
His body was lifeless, and his breathing was shallow and every step she took felt like a battle.
But the world seemed to be collapsing around her, everywhere she looked, there was danger.
Selene stumbled forward, her legs weak from exhaustion, but she didn't stop.
Axel's life was in her hands, and she wasn't going to let him die, not when they were so close to escaping everything.
'We're almost there, Axel." Her voice was hoarse, barely a whisper, but she hoped he could hear her.
She was running on fumes and there was no plan, no clear way out, just the vast city, and she had no idea where to go.
She needed shelter, they needed a place to hide, a place where they could catch their breath and regroup but even as she looked around, she couldn't see anywhere safe.
The streets were deserted, and the distant rumble of explosions told her that chaos still reigned in every corner.
Just then, the sound of footsteps brought her back to reality.
Her blood ran cold as she turned to see several figures walking in their direction.
They weren't running and weren't rushing, they were simply moving with purpose.
'Not again," Selene muttered under her breath.
Axel's weight was starting to drag her down, but she couldn't stop as the men were closing in, and she could feel the danger approaching.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the only thing she had left—a small knife.
It was all she had to defend herself and Axel. Her hands were shaking, but she gripped the handle tightly.
'We're not going to make it." Axel's voice was barely audible, but Selene heard it loud and clear.
His face was pale, his eyes barely open but even in his weakened state, he was trying to stay conscious, trying to stay with her.
'We have to." Selene's voice cracked as she glanced over her shoulder. The men were getting closer, their steps slow and steady with confidence.
'Please… don't stop." Axel whispered, his voice filled with pain making Selene's heart clenched, 'No I won't.
She pushed forward, but her legs were growing weaker, the weight of Axel was pulling her down but she had to make it to the alley up ahead.
It wasn't much, but it was the only place she could think of and if she could just get there, maybe they would have a chance.
But the men were getting closer, so close, their figures grew clearer with each step and she could feel the tension building in the air, and she knew they were almost upon them.
Just as Selene reached the alley, she heard a voice behind her.
'You know Selena, I admire your courage."
Selena's heart stopped for a moment, but she didn't look back.
In one swift movement, she shoved Axel behind her and raised the knife, prepared to fight but as the men stepped into the alley, she saw that one of them was holding something in his hand—a device.
The men stopped just a few feet away from her, their weapons drawn.
'It's over, Selene." One of the men said, his voice cold, his eyes devoid of emotion.
But just as he stepped forward, there was a sudden loud crack, like the sound of a gunshot, but it wasn't from them.
The ground beneath her feet shook again, and the walls of nearby buildings rattled as the earth seemed to tremble.
For a brief moment, everything went silent. Selene turned her head, her heart racing as she tried to understand what had just happened.
The men seemed to hesitate for a moment, glancing at each other, their expressions faltering.
And then, an explosion tore through the building across from them and the force of the blast sent a shockwave through the street, knocking Selene off balance.
She stumbled backward, but before she could react, the ground beneath her feet cracked open.
The explosion had triggered something deeper and the city was falling apart faster than she realized.
'What is going on?" one of the men shouted, but there was no time for answers.
The explosion had ripped apart the ground, and debris was falling everywhere.
Selene barely managed to shield Axel from the falling rubble as the entire street began to crumble.
The chaos was overwhelming, and everything was spinning out of control.
She could feel the heat from the explosion, the rush of air as the shockwave blasted through the alley.
But the men weren't backing down. They were still closing in, even as the destruction around them continued. They weren't afraid.
'Get out of here!" Selene screamed to Axel, pushing him further into the alley, trying to protect him as best she could but there was nowhere to run.
The explosion had opened up a chasm between them and the men were trapped in the alley with no way out but before she could process the situation, another loud explosion rocked the street.
Selene spun around, her heart racing, trying to protect Axel, but the blast had sent debris flying toward them.
The world seemed to slow down as the pieces of the building fell toward her. Then, as everything went dark, she felt a hand grab hers.
'We're not done yet." Axel's voice was weak, but it was there and that gave her just enough strength to fight back.
