Playing Along Two Fractures
Selene sat motionless on the edge of the bed, her hands resting lightly on her lap, her mind sharper than ever despite the exhaustion gnawing at her body.
The room she had been placed in was nothing short of extravagant, dark oak furniture, heavy velvet drapes, and walls lined with expensive artwork.
Everything was polished, and perfected, as if carefully curated to reflect Lucian's control. Even her captivity was wrapped in luxury, but it didn't change what it was.
Her gaze flickered to the door, her thoughts racing through the details she had gathered since waking up here. Every sound, every shift of movement beyond these walls, every unspoken rule.
Lucian hadn't locked her inside, but she knew better than to assume she was free. There were guards just beyond the threshold with silent shadows ensuring her compliance.
She inhaled deeply, keeping her expression unreadable as the door opened without warning and Lucian stepped inside.
His presence filled the room immediately like a quiet authority woven into every movement. He looked composed as if he had all the time in the world.
Selene knew better. He was always calculating, always waiting for the right moment to tighten his grip so she didn't rise or speak.
Lucian's lips curved slightly as he closed the door behind him, taking his time as he approached. He studied her, his gaze trailing over the neatly arranged bed and the untouched breakfast tray on the side table. 'You haven't eaten."
Selene met his eyes without hesitation. 'I wasn't hungry." Lucian hummed softly, stepping closer. 'That's unlike you." Selene didn't react.
He wanted a response, something, anything to break her silence but she wouldn't give it to him.
Lucian exhaled, shaking his head slightly as if amused by her defiance. 'I see you're still holding onto the illusion of control." Selene lifted her chin. 'And you're still pretending you have all the power."
A flicker of something unreadable passed through Lucian's expression before he took a slow step forward, closing the space between them with deliberate ease. 'Tell me, Selene," he murmured, his voice smooth, measured. 'Do you think this is a battle you can win?"
Selene didn't move. 'You wouldn't be standing here if you weren't still trying to win it yourself."
Lucian's smirk deepened, but there was a sharpness beneath it. He reached for the untouched breakfast tray, lifting the glass of water effortlessly before setting it back down with a soft clink. 'You're testing your limits," he observed. 'Seeing how far you can push before I push back."
Selene met his gaze without flinching. 'Am I?" Lucian chuckled, a low sound that carried amusement and warning in equal measure. 'You always did have a sharp tongue." He tilted his head slightly. 'It's a shame it never saves you from the inevitable."
Selene's breath remained steady, but inside, she braced herself. Lucian didn't make threats without following through.
He studied her for a moment longer before sighing. 'Fine. If you won't eat on your own, I'll have to find another way to encourage your cooperation." He turned slightly, gesturing toward the door.
The motion was subtle, but it sent a ripple of unease down Selene's spine. A second later, the door opened again and a figure was pushed inside, Eve.
Selene's pulse spiked before she could control it. Eve looked unharmed, but the tension in her posture told another story. She had been watching, waiting, just as Selene had but now, they were being pulled into Lucian's game together.
Lucian glanced between them, his smirk barely there. 'I thought you might appreciate some company." Selene clenched her fists beneath the folds of her dress. This wasn't just about control anymore but a test.
Lucian stepped back slightly as if giving them space. 'I suggest you rethink your approach to our arrangement," he said casually. 'Refusing me won't only affect you anymore."
Selene exhaled slowly, keeping her voice steady. 'Is that supposed to scare me?"Lucian tilted his head slightly. 'It should."Eve didn't speak, but her gaze remained locked onto Lucian, her expression unreadable.
Lucian sighed as if bored, then turned toward the door. 'Take your time," he said, amusement laced in his tone. 'I'll be waiting."The door closed behind him and silence settled between them.
Selene inhaled deeply, her mind working at full speed. Eve was here now and that changed everything. It wasn't just her life on the line anymore.
Lucian had brought Eve into this for a reason, and he wouldn't let her go unless he got what he wanted.
Eve moved first, crossing the room with controlled steps before sitting beside Selene on the bed. 'Are you okay?" Selene let out a slow breath. 'I should be asking you that."
Eve shook her head. 'I knew what I was getting into the moment I refused to let you go alone." She exhaled, her jaw tightening. 'But this? He's setting the stage for something bigger." Selene nodded. 'He's forcing me to make a choice."Eve's gaze sharpened. 'And?"
Selene swallowed the frustration building inside her. 'I need time."Eve nodded slowly. 'Then we play along."Selene exhaled sharply. 'For now."
The tension between them lingered, but beneath it was an understanding.
Lucian thought he had won but he had only just entered the real game.
