Shadows In Pursuit
Selene's breath burned in her lungs as she ran, the night air cutting against her skin like a sharp blade.
Every step forward felt like a battle against time, against the weight of everything that had led to this moment. She could hear Eve beside her, their hurried footsteps blending with the rustling leaves and the distant shouts of Lucian's men.
The sound of pursuit was growing closer, each second stretching into an eternity as they raced through the darkness. The estate's outer perimeter had been left behind, but that didn't mean they were safe.
Lucian's influence stretched far beyond those walls, and she knew without a doubt that he wouldn't let them slip away so easily. He had spent too much time weaving his web of control, too much effort ensuring that no one left unless he allowed it and Selene had just shatter that illusion.
A sharp breath escaped her lips as she forced her legs to move faster, her muscles protesting the relentless pace. Eve was keeping up, her movements quick and efficient, but even she couldn't hide the strain.
The ground beneath them was uneven, covered in damp soil and broken branches, making every step a gamble between speed and stability but they had to keep going because stopping wasn't an option.
The faint glow of headlights flickered through the trees, casting long shadows that danced ominously across the uneven terrain. Selene's heart pounded harder as she realized what it meant—vehicles. Lucian's men weren't just chasing them on foot.
Eve glanced over her shoulder, her breath ragged but controlled. 'They're circling ahead," she muttered, her voice low but urgent.
Selene didn't slow, her mind racing through possible options. 'We need cover," she said, forcing herself to think beyond the exhaustion creeping into her limbs. 'If they cut us off, we're trapped."
Eve scanned their surroundings quickly, her sharp eyes assessing the terrain. A few hundred feet ahead, the tree line gave way to an open stretch of land–a dangerous disadvantage but beyond that, she spotted what they needed. 'There's a ridge up ahead," she said. 'If we reach it before they do, we can disappear into the valley."
Selene nodded, adjusting her course. They had no choice but to make it because if they were caught now, there would be no second chances.
The ground sloped downward as they ran, the incline making it harder to keep balance, but they didn't slow. Adrenaline was the only thing keeping them upright, the fear of being captured fueling every movement and the shouts behind them grew louder, closer, a brutal reminder that they weren't outrunning the danger—they were merely delaying it.
A sharp crack echoed through the air. Selene's stomach clenched as she realized it wasn't a branch breaking.
A bullet tore through the bark of a tree just ahead, sending splinters flying in every direction. The gunfire was deliberate, meant to drive them in a specific direction rather than kill. Lucian's men didn't need them dead, they needed them cornered.
Selene ducked instinctively, her breath coming in sharp gasps. 'They're herding us," she muttered, frustration mixing with the fear clawing at her chest. Eve jaw tightened. 'Then we need to move faster."
The ridge was closer now, the steep edge coming into view as they sprinted toward it. The drop beyond it was steep but not deadly, leading into a dense cluster of trees below, it was a risk, but it was their only chance.
Selene and Eve reached the edge at the same time, their gazes locking for a fraction of a second but they didn't need to speak because the decision had already been made and without hesitation, they jumped.
The air rushed past them in a violent rush, the sudden drop stealing the breath from Selene's lungs. The impact came hard and fast, her body hitting the uneven ground with a force that rattled her bones.
She rolled instinctively, absorbing the shock, her muscles screaming in protest and pain radiated through her body, but she forced herself to push past it.
Eve landed just beside her, grimacing as she pulled herself upright. 'You okay?" she asked, her voice tight.
Selene gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stand. 'I'm fine." It was a lie, but there was no time to acknowledge the pain, not when the real danger was still above them.
The ridge loomed high above, and even in the dim light, Selene could see the silhouettes of figures peering down at them.
Lucian's men had reached the edge, then a familiar voice drifted down, smooth and taunting. 'Well played, Selene." Lucian.
Selene's chest tightened, her fingers curling into fists. She couldn't see his face, but she didn't need to as she could hear the amusement in his tone, the calm confidence of a man who wasn't worried about losing.
'You're persistent," he continued, his voice carrying easily through the quiet night. 'But you should know by now, you don't win by running." Selene's jaw clenched, but she refused to respond. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction.
Lucian exhaled softly. 'You'll have to come back eventually," he mused. 'And when you do, I'll be waiting." A sharp signal was given, and then the sound of retreating footsteps filled the air.
Selene's pulse remained erratic but her mind was still racing. He wasn't chasing them anymore, he had let them go and the had to be a reason for that.
Eve exhaled slowly, brushing dirt from her hands. 'That's not a good sign."
Selene swallowed hard, her body still thrumming with adrenaline. 'No," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. 'It's not."
Lucian didn't let people escape, not unless he wanted them to, which meant this wasn't over.
