The Point Of No Return
The darkness around them was suffocating, pressing in from all sides. Selene's heart was still racing and her body was trembling with the aftershock of the explosion.
Her mind was fogged with panic, but the urgency of the situation cut through the haze.
Axel was still on the ground, struggling to move, his face twisted in pain. She couldn't leave him behind, not now, not when they were so close.
The sound of boots on the floor was quick and purposeful cutting through the silence.
She could feel their presence growing like the walls were closing in on them, but she couldn't afford to look. She had to keep moving and get Axel to safety.
'Axel, come on we need to go." Her voice was low, almost a whisper, but it was filled with desperation.
Axel's head shot up at the sound of her voice. His face was pale, and sweat coated his brow, but he was trying to move, trying to push through the pain.
The rubble had pinned him down, and Selene could see that he wasn't going to make it without help.
'I can't…move…fast enough." Axel's words were strained, but there was a strength in them. He didn't want to give up, didn't want to drag her down with him.
Selene gritted her teeth, she wasn't going to leave him, not like this so she grabbed his arm and pulled with all the strength she had left, ignoring the way her body screamed in protest.
'We're not done yet, we're getting out of here alive. You're not dying in this hellhole."
Axel winced, his eyes clouded with pain, but he didn't resist, with Selene's help, they managed to get him up to his feet, though he was leaning heavily on her.
Every step he took seemed to drain him more, but they kept moving, inching toward the exit but there was no time as the sound of footsteps grew louder, echoing down the hallway.
They were getting closer, and there was nowhere to hide.
'We're not going to make it," Axel whispered, his breath shaky, but Selene's mind wouldn't allow her to stop.
She couldn't afford to think like that, they had to survive in every possible way they could.
'Move!" she urged again, pulling Axel along as she pushed him toward the nearest doorway but just as they reached the threshold, the door slammed shut with deafening noise and Selene's body froze.
A figure stood at the end of the hallway, silhouetted by the dim light coming from the room behind them.
The man wasn't alone, other figures moved in the shadows, just out of sight, but Selene knew they were there, which meant more enemies, more danger closing in.
'You can't escape," the figure said, his voice cold and unyielding.
His eyes locked onto hers, and she felt the weight of his gaze settle over her, like a physical force.
'You really think you have a choice?" Selene shot back, her voice shaky but filled with anger but she couldn't let him see her fear.
The figure stepped forward, and the men behind him followed, their footsteps heavy against the cold concrete floor.
Selene's breath caught in her throat as she realized there were too many of them, far too many for her to fight on her own and even if she tried, there was no chance of winning without help.
Axel looked at her, his eyes pleading, but there was nothing she could do, at that point, it was like there should be some kind of magic that would happen and take them from there immediately.
'Please, Selene." Axel's voice cracked, his grip was weak on her arm. 'I... I can't keep going, you have to save yourself."
The words hit her like a slap, but she didn't have time to dwell on them, she wasn't going to leave him there, not after everything but there was no way out.
The hallway was blocked by the figures, their presence was a wall of menace and power and in the distance, she could hear the unmistakable sound of more boots, more men coming from every direction.
'Get down!" The order came from the man who had been standing at the end of the hallway.
He raised his hand, and in an instant, several more figures entered the room, their weapons aimed at Selene and Axel.
She didn't hesitate and without thinking, she dropped to the floor, pulling Axel down with her.
The moment they hit the ground, the sound of gunshots rang out, the bullets whizzing past them, narrowly missing their heads.
'Go!" Selene shouted, her voice urgent. She wasn't sure if Axel could make it, but they had no other choice.
The men were closing in, and the noise from the gunfire had only brought more attention and they were running out of time.
Axel's face was pale, his body weak from the pain, but he pushed himself up, trying to keep up with Selene but he was slowing them down.
He couldn't run like this, couldn't move fast enough, and with every step, he seemed to collapse further into exhaustion.
Selene glanced back at him, and her heart twisted. She couldn't carry him forever but they wouldn't make it if she didn't act.
Just as she reached out to help him again, there was a loud crack as the door to the room behind them was kicked open followed by more harmed figures.
The pressure was building, and Selene felt the suffocating weight of it all pressing down on her chest. They were too close and she couldn't keep running.
'Stay down!" Axel grunted as he pushed Selene behind a nearby table, his strength failing but he held onto her, his grip weak, but his eyes held a desperate fire.
'We're not getting out of here, Selene, it's over, just leave me." but she refused to listen to him.
The door to the room opened wider, and a man stepped inside, his face familiar. Lucian.
Her breath caught, she had never expected to see him again, not like this, his eyes were cold, and calculating, and for a moment, he just stood there, watching them.
'What do you want, Lucian?" Selene asked, her voice sharp with defiance, though her heart was pounding in her chest.
Lucian didn't answer right away. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, as though considering her words then he spoke with a flat tone. 'It's time to end this."
With a sudden, sharp motion, he gestured to the men around him and they raised their weapons, and Selene's blood turned cold.
This was it, they had nowhere to run and just as the first man pulled the trigger, the world around Selene exploded into chaos.
