A Cracked Reflection
The door shut behind Selene with a dull thud, the sound sealing her back inside the room that had become both her cage and her battlefield.
The faint scent of the spilled wine still lingered on her fingers, a bitter reminder of the power play she had just walked away from. She had defied Lucian again and he hadn't taken it well.
She stood in the middle of the room with her body tense and her mind racing because every interaction with Lucian was a test, a push-and-pull of control, and today, she had pushed further than before but she knew better than to mistake his momentary amusement for surrender because men like Lucian don't like losing.
Selene exhaled slowly, moving toward the mirror on the far wall but the reflection staring back at her was one she barely recognized; tired, but unbroken with a bruise darkened the skin near her temple from the earlier scuffle, her lips were chapped, and her wrists bore faint red marks from the bindings but she was still standing.
Her fingers ghosted over the frame of the mirror, it was solid, heavy, and perfectly placed, a decorative choice, but also a strategic one because Lucian wouldn't allow anything in this room that could be used against him and yet something about it felt off.
She ran her fingers along the edges, pressing lightly, smooth and cold but when she reached the lower right corner, she felt a slight give and her breath caught.
She pressed harder and the glass shifted then a small sliver of space opened between the mirror and the wall, just enough for a hidden compartment.
Selene's pulse quickened as she slipped her fingers into the gap, prying it open just enough to see inside.
The compartment was narrow, barely the width of her hand, but tucked inside was something unexpected; a folded piece of paper, her heartbeat pounded as she carefully pulled it free.
The paper was aged, the edges slightly curled, as if it had been hidden here for a long time, she unfolded it with steady hands with her eyes scanning the hurried scrawl of ink across the page.
"He lies, he always lies, find the key, the garden." Selene's breath hitched.
The handwriting was unfamiliar, the message was cryptic but deliberate which meant someone else had been here before her, someone who had tried to escape.
Her fingers tightened around the paper as she turned back toward the door, her mind racing.'The garden." Lucian's estate was vast, and from what she had seen earlier, the gardens stretched beyond the main house, hidden behind tall iron fences and thick hedges so if there was a key, it had to be important.
Specific questions begin to pop up in her head; A way out? A weapon? A weakness in Lucian's control? She didn't know but she was going to find out.
A sharp knock shattered the silence and Selene folded the paper swiftly, tucking it into the sleeve of her shirt just as the door unlocked and Eve stepped inside.
Her expression was unreadable, but something about the way she moved was different; more cautious and more aware.
She stopped a few steps away, her hands folded neatly in front of her. "Lucian has requested your presence again." Selene's stomach tightened, but she kept her expression neutral. "Already? I thought he needed time to lick his wounds."
Eve's lips twitched, just slightly. "He's not a man who likes to wait." Selene studied her carefully but she was hard to read, her face was perfectly composed, but there was something in her posture; a flicker of hesitation.
"Why are you here, Eve?" Selene asked suddenly, Eve blinked. "Excuse me?" "You work for him, but you don't fear him, not the way the others do." Selene tilted her head. "So why are you here?"
A shadow crossed Eve's face, there and gone in an instant. "Because I choose to be." But Selene didn't believe her, she didn't push.
Eve motioned toward the door. "Shall we?" Selene forced her body to relax, slipping the hidden note further into her sleeve before stepping forward.
The guards outside barely glanced at her as they followed Eve down the corridor and Selena kept memorizing every turn, every corner, every potential escape route.
They entered a different wing of the house, one she hadn't seen before, the air inside was cooler, the designs were even more meticulous and a long hallway led to a set of ornate double doors while the dark wood was polished to perfection.
Eve stopped in front of them, knocking once before pushing them open, Lucian was already waiting inside.
The room was dimly lit with a single chandelier casting golden light over the sleek furniture and the deep red carpets while the fireplace crackled softly in the background, adding warmth to the otherwise cold space.
Lucian stood by the window, his back turned to them, his posture was relaxed and his hands clasped behind him as he gazed out into the night.
"Leave us," he said without turning but Eve hesitated, just briefly, before stepping back and shutting the doors behind her but Selene stood still.
Lucian turned slowly with his usual unreadable expression while his eyes lingered on her, studying and measuring."You've made quite an impression," he murmured but Selene lifted her chin. "I wasn't trying to," Lucian smirked. "That's what makes it interesting."
He stepped toward her, slow and deliberate. "Most people break by now, they crumble but you…" His eyes gleamed. "You're different." Selene forced herself to remain still. "Flattery doesn't suit you."
Lucian exhaled, "Perhaps not but the truth does." He tilted his head. "Tell me, Selene, how long do you think you can keep this up?" Selene's pulse quickened. "Keep what up?"
Lucian smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "This game of defiance, your act of resistance, you think it makes you strong, but strength without control is just desperation."
Selene's jaw clenched. "You talk a lot about control, is that because you're afraid of losing it?"Lucian chuckled in a dark sound. "You're bold, I admire that." He stepped closer. Too close. "But boldness only gets you so far."
Selene's breath steadied. "And what happens when I get further?"Lucian's smirk faded, just slightly and he reached out, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face, the touch was light, but it burned."You won't," he said softly.
Selene held his gaze; a sign that she just accepted his challenge, then a knock on the door broke the tension and Lucian exhaled, stepping back. "Enter." The door opened.
A guard stepped inside, his expression unreadable. "Sir. There's been an incident."Lucian's body stilled while Selene's pulse spiked and the guard hesitated before continuing. "It's about Caleb." Lucian's eyes darkened and something in the air shifted.
Selene's heartbeat thundered; something had happened.
Lucian turned to her slowly, his gaze was sharp, Selene didn't blink but inside, she was burning.
