A Pan Of Fire
The warehouse was a battlefield. The sound of gunfire and shouting filled the air, echoing off the walls as the dust from the explosion still hung thick in the room.
Selene's heart pounded in her chest as she quickly scanned the area, her mind racing.
She could barely hear Axel's voice through the ringing in her ears, but she felt the urgency in his grip as he pulled her toward the exit.
"Move!" Axel barked, his voice harsh but filled with command.
Aurora stumbled behind them, her face pale from the shock of the blast, but determination in her eyes.
Selene's own legs felt like jelly, the weight of everything pressing on her shoulders. They had to get out. There was no time for hesitation.
The hallway ahead was narrow, the lights flickering overhead as they moved quickly through the debris-laden space.
Behind them, the sound of shouting grew louder, and the distinct thud of heavy boots approaching added another layer of urgency.
Selene could feel it in the air-they were being hunted.
"Faster!" Axel urged again, his voice cracking through the chaos.
They reached a set of stairs leading down to a small side exit, but just as they approached, the door at the bottom slammed open.
Three figures emerged from the shadows, their faces masked and their guns raised.
"Get back!" one of the men shouted, aiming his weapon at them.
Without thinking, Selene reacted. Her gun was already in her hand, and before the man could react, she fired two quick shots.
The first hit the man in the shoulder, knocking him back, while the second grazed his side. He staggered, but didn't fall.
The other two raised their weapons, but Axel and Selene were already moving.
"Get down!" Axel shouted, pulling Aurora to the ground as Selene fired again, her shots precise.
The second assailant went down in a heap, his body hitting the floor with a thud.
Aurora gasped, her eyes wide with fear, but Selene didn't let up. They couldn't afford to stop now.
"Go, go, go!" Selene shouted, grabbing Aurora's arm and dragging her down the stairs. Axel followed closely behind, covering their retreat.
As they burst through the side exit, the cold night air hit them, the sounds of the warehouse fading behind them. They were outside, but the night felt no safer.
They ran through the alley, their feet pounding against the pavement as Selene's mind raced.
She couldn't stop. She wouldn't stop until she knew everyone was safe. They reached the street and moved quickly toward the parked car.
"Get in!" Axel ordered, unlocking the doors with a swipe of his key fob.
They all scrambled into the vehicle, but before Selene could close the door, a figure stepped into the headlights of the car.
"Not so fast," Lucian's voice rang out, calm and menacing.
Selene's heart dropped.
She barely had time to react before Lucian raised his hand, signaling to the men in the shadows. They stepped forward, surrounding the car.
Selene's breath hitched in her chest, but her face remained unreadable.
Lucian wasn't just trying to capture them anymore. He was here to end it all. She could see it in his eyes.
"You think you can escape, Selene?" Lucian asked, his voice chilling as he approached.
"You're mine now. The pieces are already in motion. There's no running from me."
"Get out of our way, Lucian!" Axel shouted, his voice filled with frustration.
Lucian laughed softly, his eyes never leaving Selene. "I've already won, Axel. But I'll give you a choice."
Selene's heart skipped a beat. A choice?
"Step out of the car," Lucian continued, his voice smoother now, like a predator toying with its prey.
"You can leave now and let the game end-or you can stay and face the consequences."
Selene's mind raced, her thoughts a blur. She wasn't about to let Lucian think he had the upper hand. This wasn't over yet. She turned to Axel and Aurora, meeting their eyes.
"We fight," Selene said, her voice steady despite the tension flooding her system.
Axel nodded, his jaw clenched, and Aurora swallowed hard, nodding silently.
Lucian raised an eyebrow, as though he had expected a different answer. "So be it."
Before Selene could react, Lucian motioned to his men. They stepped forward, closing the distance between them and the car.
Selene's hand went to her gun, but just as she was about to make her move, a sudden explosion rang out, shaking the ground beneath them.
The force of it knocked them all back, and the street lights flickered, casting everything into temporary darkness.
A cold gust of wind swept through the alley as debris rained down around them. Selene's ears were ringing, but she forced herself to her feet, her mind screaming for answers.
"Everyone okay?" Axel shouted, his voice barely audible above the chaos.
"I'm fine!" Aurora shouted back, though she sounded shaken.
"I'm not waiting around to find out what comes next," Selene growled, wiping dust from her face.
She didn't wait for another second. Her hand was already reaching for the door when the sound of screeching tires filled the air.
A black car came into view, speeding down the street toward them. The headlights blinded Selene for a moment, but she didn't flinch.
She knew that sound. The car came to a screeching halt in front of them, and the engine died with a heavy thud.
The door of the car opened, and a figure stepped out. Damian Rothschild.
"What are you doing here?" Selene demanded, her voice a mix of disbelief and anger.
Damian didn't answer immediately. He looked past Selene, his eyes narrowing at Lucian and his men.
"It seems we have an issue," he said calmly, his hand resting casually on the doorframe. "And I don't think I like the way this is going."
Lucian's eyes flickered to Damian, his expression unreadable. "This doesn't concern you, Rothschild. Stay out of it."
Damian's lips curled into a smile, but there was no warmth in it. "I think you'll find that it does."
Before anyone could react, another vehicle appeared from around the corner, its headlights cutting through the darkness.
The car was sleek, black, and unmistakable. More men. More guns.
Selene's heart stopped. She knew they were running out of time. But just as she was about to make her move, she noticed something in the corner of her eye.
Another figure.
Someone was walking toward them from the shadows, a figure cloaked in a long black coat. The silhouette was tall, slender, and moved with a predatory grace.
Selene's blood turned cold as the figure stepped into the light. It was Victor Sinclair.
