The Edge of Resistance
The air in the room was thick with the scent of sweat and tension, and Selene took every breath, feeling heavier than the last. Her muscles ached, her body reminding her of every bruise, every hit she had taken in the last few hours but she couldn't afford to focus on the pain, not when the next move could determine everything.
Eve stood beside her, her wrists still bound but her stance firm. Lucian's guards had closed in, forming an impenetrable wall around them, but Selene wasn't blind to the way they moved. Their confidence made them predictable and that was the weakness she could use.
Lucian remained in the center of it all, his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. He wasn't worried.
Selene exhaled slowly, scanning the room. They were outnumbered, but not out of options.
Lucian took a step forward, his gaze locking onto Selene's. 'You never learn." Selene tilted her head slightly. 'Maybe you're just a bad teacher," Lucian smirked. 'Then let's correct that." He gestured and the guards moved.
Selene reacted instantly. Her body twisted, her foot kicking out, connecting with the nearest guard's knee. He grunted, stumbling back, but another was already reaching for her.
She ducked, shifting her weight, using the momentum to ram her shoulder into his chest. He staggered but didn't fall.
Beside her, Eve fought just as fiercely, using her limited mobility to strike where it mattered. A well-placed elbow to the ribs, a swift kick to the shin -quick, efficient movements meant to disable but they were still outnumbered.
Selene dodged a strike, barely avoiding the hand that reached for her. The odds weren't in their favor, but she refused to let that slow her down.
Lucian sighed, watching with mild interest. He wasn't stopping them, not yet.
Selene caught a glimpse of his smirk just as she felt the shift in the air behind her but it was too late as a guard's arm wrapped around her from behind, yanking her backward.
Her feet lifted off the ground for a split second before she was slammed into the nearest wall, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs.
Eve cursed, trying to move toward her, but another guard grabbed her, holding her back. Lucian exhaled softly. 'Enough." The room fell silent.
Selene clenched her teeth, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to regain control of her breath. Her wrists throbbed from the restraints, but she forced herself to stay upright.
Lucian approached her, his footsteps slow, deliberate. 'You always make things harder than they need to be," he mused, tilting his head slightly. 'Why?" Selene met his gaze, her voice steady. 'Because I don't break." Lucian's lips twitched. 'Everyone breaks." Selene exhaled through her nose. 'Not me."
Lucian studied her for a long moment before turning slightly, nodding to the guards and the grip on her arms tightened, dragging her forward.
Lucian walked ahead, leading them out of the room. The hallway was dimly lit, every step echoing against the concrete walls.
Selene kept her breathing steady, memorizing the turns, and the doors they passed, because every detail mattered and every second counted.
They stopped in front of another door. Lucian turned toward her. 'You can still make this easy." Selene arched her brow. 'That's not my style." Lucian sighed. 'No, I suppose it isn't." He opened the door.
The room inside was larger than she expected with a long table sitting in the center and a single chair positioned at the far end.
The walls were lined with shelves, filled with neatly organized files. A screen flickered on the wall, casting a cold glow across the space.
Selene's stomach clenched. This wasn't just another interrogation room nor was it something she understood.
Lucian stepped inside, gesturing toward the chair. 'Sit." Selene didn't move. Lucian exhaled. 'Sit, Selene." The guards pushed her forward.
She had no choice but to lower herself into the chair, her wrists still bound, her back straight despite the exhaustion pressing into her bones.
Lucian walked to the other side of the table, placing a folder in front of her. 'You've been very difficult," he said casually, flipping it open. 'But you already know that." Selene remained silent.
Lucian tapped his fingers against the paper inside. 'You think you're fighting for something." Selene's gaze didn't waver. 'I know I am."
Lucian's smirk returned. 'And yet, you're sitting here, captured again." Selene exhaled slowly. 'For now." Lucian leaned forward slightly. 'How long do you think you can keep this up?" Selene met his gaze. 'Long enough."
Lucian studied her for a moment before sighing. 'You never change," Selene smirked faintly. 'Neither do you." Lucian chuckled. 'Maybe that's why we keep ending up here." Selene's jaw tightened.
She knew what he was doing—drawing this out, trying to wear her down piece by piece Lucian glanced toward the guards. 'Take her back." And Selene's body tensed.
'No, I am not going back" She moved and the guards reached for her.
