The Unyielding Storm
Selene felt the weight of the cold metal pressed against her back, each second stretching into an eternity.
The room had fallen into an unsettling silence, broken only by the steady breathing of Lucian and the guards who surrounded her. The tension spread across the room, the kind that carried the promise of violence if the wrong move was made.
Eve stood beside her, her muscles coiled tight, her body ready to react, but even she understood that one wrong step could bring everything crashing down.
Lucian stood just a few feet away, his expression composed, his hands tucked neatly into his pockets. His presence was not one of immediate danger but of calculated control, the kind that made it clear he held all the power in this moment. His voice, smooth and steady, cut through the silence like a blade. "Kneel." Selene's spine stiffened.
The word rang through her skull, pressing against her defiance like a force meant to shatter her resolve. Her pulse pounded in her ears, her breath steady, but her body remained locked in place she would not lower herself, not in front of him, not under his command. She refused to become a puppet on his strings.
Lucian tilted his head slightly, amusement flickering in his dark eyes. 'You're thinking about it," he murmured, his gaze unwavering. 'That's progress." Selene's jaw tightened, but she said nothing and had no intention of giving him what he wanted.
Lucian sighed, as if disappointed. "I admire your endurance," he said, his voice even, "but I wonder how long it will last once you understand the consequences of disobedience."
The guard behind Selene adjusted his grip, the gun pressing deeper into her back. She knew this was Lucian's way of testing her, pushing her limits to see when she would break but he had underestimated her strength before, and he was about to do it again.
Eve's voice was low but sharp. 'You don't have to do this," she said, her eyes locked onto Selene's, a silent plea woven into her gaze. 'Whatever happens, you are not the one who should kneel."
Lucian chuckled, the sound was quiet, almost thoughtful. 'Loyalty is such a beautiful thing," he mused. 'But it is also a dangerous weakness."
Selene inhaled slowly, her mind racing through every possible outcome. If she refused to kneel, Lucian would push harder. He would turn his attention toward Eve, and that was something she could not allow but if she obeyed, even for a moment, she would be giving him power over her, feeding into the illusion that he could break her.
Lucian took a step forward, his polished shoes tapping lightly against the floor. "Since you're taking your time," he said, "let me make this easier for you."
He raised his hand and the guard standing closest to Eve moved without hesitation, his fist connecting with her stomach. Eve gasped, doubling over slightly, but she didn't fall.
Selene's control snapped. She turned sharply, her elbow striking the guard behind her before he could react. The gun clattered to the ground, and in the same breath, she lunged forward, grabbing the wrist of the man who had hit Eve and twisting it sharply. A crack echoed through the air as he let out a sharp grunt of pain.
Lucian stepped back, his expression unreadable. He had expected resistance, but not this level of aggression.
The other guards moved in quickly, but Selene didn't hesitate. She struck first, using the moment of surprise to her advantage. She grabbed the fallen gun, aiming it at the nearest threat before swinging it hard against the side of his head. He staggered, but she was already moving to the next.
Eve recovered swiftly, throwing herself into the fight without hesitation. She had spent too much time in captivity, too many moments of helplessness, she wasn't going to waste another second as she ducked under a wild swing, her knee driving into the ribs of the man closest to her.
Lucian remained still, watching.
The fight was swift and brutal. Selene and Eve had always been survivors, but they were outnumbered, and Lucian had designed this game knowing they would eventually tire.
Selene gritted her teeth, swinging her leg out to knock a guard off balance. Her mind screamed for her to keep moving, to keep fighting, to find a way out but even as she landed another strike, she knew Lucian had expected this. He never played a game he didn't know how to win and then the sound of a gun being cocked cut through the chaos.
Selene froze and Eve stiffened beside her. Lucian sighed. 'Enough." Selene turned, her chest heaving, her gaze locking onto him. Lucian held a gun now and the barrel was aimed directly at Eve. His grip was steady, his expression calm, but there was no mistaking the weight of his next words.
'I gave you a chance," he said. 'You chose violence." Selene clenched her jaw. Lucian exhaled, shaking his head. 'Now, I choose how this ends."
Selene's heart pounded, every fiber of her being screaming for her to act, but she knew one wrong move would mean everything ended in blood. Lucian had them exactly where he wanted.
Eve's voice was quiet, steady. 'Selene." Selene inhaled slowly. Lucian was expecting desperation. He was expecting fear but she would give him neither.
She took a slow step forward, her voice calm. 'You've made your point, Lucian." Lucian arched his brow. 'Have I?"
Selene kept her tone even. 'You want control, you want me to bend but killing her?" She tilted her head slightly. 'That won't make me obey. It'll make me burn everything you've built to the ground."
Lucian studied her, considering then he smiled and Selene's stomach clenched.
Lucian lowered the gun slightly, but the amusement in his eyes sent a chill down her spine. He wasn't done.
'I'll give you one last opportunity," he murmured. 'Since you seem so intent on resisting." He nodded toward his guards and two of them moved forward, grabbing Eve before she could react.
Selene stepped forward sharply. 'Lucian–" Lucian raised the gun again, this time pressing the barrel against Eve's shoulder. 'One choice," he murmured. 'Your loyalty or her pain."
Selene's breath came slow and controlled, but her mind was already spinning through possibilities.
Lucian smiled, tilting his head. 'What will it be?"
