The Storm Too Fast
The small cabin nestled deep in the woods was exactly what Selene needed-isolated, secure, and far from the prying eyes of the city.
The door creaked slightly as it opened, revealing a dimly lit interior.
A fireplace crackled in the corner, casting flickering shadows on the walls. The smell of wood and burning embers filled the air.
Selene stepped inside, her boots heavy on the wooden floor. Aurora followed closely behind, her expression a mix of relief and tension.
Axel, still bruised but alert, moved toward the couch, wincing as he sat down. The cabin was small but well-kept, the kind of place that could easily be overlooked. It was perfect for laying low.
"We're safe for now," Selene said, glancing back at Aurora. Her voice was steady, but the weight of what was coming pressed on her shoulders. She had made it this far, but she couldn't stop now. There was still work to be done.
Aurora nodded, but the unease in her eyes didn't disappear. "For now," she echoed. "But for how long?"
Selene didn't answer immediately. She walked to the window, staring out at the thick forest surrounding the cabin.
The wind rustled the leaves, and the world outside seemed quiet, almost peaceful. But Selene knew better than to trust appearances. The storm wasn't over. It was just gathering strength.
Axel leaned forward, his voice rough but determined. "We need to find out who's pulling the strings. Who's really behind all this."
Selene turned to him, her expression hardening. "I know. But that's not our priority right now. We need to make sure we're not walking into another trap first."
Aurora exhaled sharply. "And how do we do that? We can't just hide here forever."
Selene's jaw tightened. "No, we can't. But we need a plan. We need to be ready for whatever comes next."
There was silence for a moment, each of them processing the gravity of the situation. Selene felt the weight of their eyes on her.
She had always been the one to lead, to make decisions, but for the first time in a long while, she questioned if she had all the answers.
Axel broke the silence. "So, what's the next step?"
Selene turned back to the window, her mind racing. She couldn't afford to make a mistake.
Not now. Not when everything was on the line. "We wait," she said finally, her voice sharp. "We wait for them to come to us."
Aurora frowned. "That's your plan? Wait?"
Selene smirked, but there was no humor in it. "Sometimes, waiting is the best move."
Axel raised an eyebrow. "You've been planning something. I can see it in your eyes."
Selene didn't respond immediately. She didn't need to. She was already thinking ahead, calculating her next move.
Victor Sinclair was out there, somewhere, making his own plans. But what he didn't know was that Selene was always one step ahead.
The fire crackled in the corner, and the only sound that filled the room was the soft hum of the wind outside.
The tension between them grew, palpable and thick, until finally, Selene spoke again. "I'll make the call."
She reached for her phone and dialed a number. It only rang once before the voice on the other end answered. "Selene."
Lucian's voice was smooth, always composed, but Selene could hear the hint of concern beneath it. "You sound like you're ready for war."
Selene exhaled, glancing at Aurora and Axel before responding. "I am. And I need your help."
Lucian's voice was quiet for a moment, but then he replied, "What do you need?"
Selene hesitated. She wasn't one to ask for help often, but this wasn't a fight she could win alone. "I need information.
I need everything you can find on Victor Sinclair. His business dealings, his contacts, any weaknesses we can exploit."
Lucian was silent for a moment. "You're planning to take him down."
Selene's voice was unwavering. "Yes."
Lucian sighed. "Alright. I'll have my people start digging. It'll take some time."
"Good," Selene said, her voice cold. "And if you can, find out who's working with him. I need to know who's pulling the strings behind the scenes."
"I'll get on it," Lucian replied. "But be careful, Selene. You're playing with fire." "I know," she said, hanging up the phone.
Aurora raised an eyebrow. "And?"
Selene's eyes were hard. "And now we wait."
The next few days passed in a blur of tension. They kept to the cabin, staying out of sight, but the fear of being caught never left them.
Selene spent most of her time on the phone with Lucian, working through the information he'd gathered.
She learned more about Victor Sinclair's business empire, his contacts, and the people he'd been working with. But nothing was concrete. There were too many shadows, too many layers of deceit.
It wasn't until the fourth day that Lucian called back with something important.
Selene answered the phone, her voice tight. "What do you have for me?"
Lucian's voice was serious. "It's bigger than we thought. Victor has been moving money through a number of front companies. They're all tied to a shell corporation he controls, but there's something strange"
"What is it?" Selene interrupted.
"There's a name that keeps popping up," Lucian continued. "A name that shouldn't be in his circle."
Selene felt a flicker of curiosity. "Who?"
Lucian hesitated. "Damian Rothschild."
Selene's heart skipped a beat. She knew Damian Rothschild. He was a powerful figure in the business world, but she never imagined he would be connected to Victor Sinclair.
She leaned back, her mind racing. "What's the connection?"
Lucian's voice was low. "I don't know yet, but it's clear that Victor and Damian have been working together on something major. And they've been using these front companies to fund it."
Selene's mind began to piece things together. Damian Rothschild was dangerous, but not the type to get involved in shady dealings without a purpose. There had to be something bigger at play, something that connected them.
"What else?" she asked.
Lucian paused before speaking. "There's one more thing. I found a location. A warehouse. It's not listed anywhere, but it's connected to one of Victor's shell companies. I think it's where they're keeping your"
Selene didn't wait for him to finish. "I'm going after it."
Lucian's voice was urgent. "Selene, wait. It's too dangerous. You can't"
But she had already ended the call.
Aurora looked at her, her eyes filled with concern. "Selene, what are you thinking?"
Selene grabbed her coat and turned toward the door. "I'm going to get Axel back."
Aurora stepped forward, grabbing her arm. "Selene, you can't just run into danger like this. We need a plan."
Selene turned, her expression hard. "We don't have time for plans, Aurora. I'm not leaving him out there."
Axel was still recovering, his body bruised and broken, but his spirit was unyielding. Selene couldn't-wouldn't-let Victor Sinclair take him.
She stormed out of the cabin, Aurora following close behind. The cold night air bit at her skin, but she didn't feel it. Her mind was focused, her goal clear. They had to act before it was too late.
The car roared to life as they sped toward the warehouse, the moonlight casting long shadows across the road.
The wind howled outside, and Selene's heart beat in sync with the engine's rhythm. She knew the risks, but she couldn't stop.
Aurora's voice was barely audible above the noise. "Selene, please...don't do this alone."
Selene turned to look at her. "I'm not alone."
The warehouse loomed ahead.
They had made it.
But as they turned the corner, they saw something that stopped them cold.
A black SUV was parked outside.
And standing by the door, waiting for them, was none other than Victor Sinclair.
The trap had been set and Selene had walked right into it.
