The Chase Begins
The truck roared through the streets, its tires skidding against the uneven pavement.
Selene clutched Axel tightly, her heart still hammering in her chest as she tried to process what had just happened.
The air inside the vehicle was thick with tension and the sound of the engine drowned out everything else.
Axel was still barely conscious, his head resting against her shoulder, his breathing ragged and she could feel the warmth of his blood against her skin, a stark reminder that time was running out and he needed medical attention fast.
The driver, a man she hadn't gotten a good look at yet, kept his hands steady on the wheel, his gaze fixed on the road ahead.
The truck swerved sharply to the left, dodging an abandoned car that had been left in the middle of the street.
Selene turned her head to look through the back window, and her stomach dropped, they were being followed.
The black SUVs that had been hunting them earlier were closing in, their headlights cutting through the smoke-filled night.
The sight sent a fresh wave of panic through her veins reminding her they weren't safe.
'Who are you?" Selene demanded, her voice hoarse from exhaustion as she turned toward the driver, her grip tightening on Axel. 'Why did you help us?"
The driver didn't answer immediately. He was focused, his hands gripping the wheel tightly but after a moment, he spoke.
'You looked like you needed saving." His voice was deep, and steady, but there was an edge to it, it was like he wasn't new to situations like this.
Selene wasn't convinced. 'And you just happened to be there, in the middle of all this?" Her suspicion was clear, but she didn't have time to interrogate him.
'Let's just say you're not the only one running from them." The driver glanced at her briefly in the rearview mirror. 'They've been hunting me too."
Selene didn't have time to ask what that meant as the sound of gunfire cracked through the air, and the truck jerked as a bullet hit the side panel bringing the SUVs closer to them.
'Hold on!" The driver shouted, slamming his foot on the gas.
Selene barely had time to brace herself before the truck swerved again, narrowly missing another vehicle abandoned on the road.
The weight of Axel's body pressed against her as she struggled to keep her balance.
The sound of another round of gunfire filled the air. Selene turned her head and saw the glint of weapons from the SUV's windows.
They weren't just trying to capture them anymore, they were trying to kill them.
The driver cursed under his breath. 'They're not letting up."
Selene's pulse raced. She had to think fast. They couldn't outrun them forever.
The truck was fast, but the SUVs were built for this kind of chase so they needed another way out.
'There's an underpass up ahead." The driver gritted his teeth as he checked the mirrors. 'If I can get us there, we might lose them but it's going to be rough."
Selene nodded, her mind racing as she looked down at Axel, his face pale, his body weak and he wouldn't survive another crash but she had to trust this stranger.
The truck accelerated, barreling down the dark streets as the SUVs closed in behind them.
The road ahead was uneven, littered with debris and broken pavement. Selene could feel the tension in the air, the weight of what was about to happen.
Then, just as they reached an intersection, one of the SUVs swerved to cut them off.
The driver reacted instantly, yanking the wheel to the right. The truck slammed into a side street, the tires screeching against the asphalt.
The force of the turn threw Selene sideways, but she held onto Axel tightly, keeping him steady.
The SUV that had tried to block them didn't slow down. Instead, it kept coming, its headlights glaring like the eyes of a predator locked onto its prey.
'They're not giving up!" Selene shouted but the driver didn't respond. He was too focused, his eyes darting between the road and the rearview mirror.
The underpass was close now, just a few hundred meters away but the SUVs were relentless. They weren't just trying to stop them anymore, they were trying to corner them.
Selene could see another SUV speeding up from the right, trying to force them off course. Her grip on Axel tightened as she realized they were running out of time.
'We need to do something now!" she yelled.
The driver clenched his jaw. 'Hold on tight."
Then, without warning, he slammed the brakes.
The sudden stop sent the truck skidding, the tires screaming as the vehicle spun sideways.
The SUVs behind them weren't expecting it so the first one swerved hard to avoid a collision, slamming into a streetlamp.
The second SUV wasn't as lucky. It smashed into the first one, the impact sending both vehicles spinning out of control.
Selene's breath caught in her throat as she watched the chaos unfold. The third SUV, the one that had been trying to cut them off, was still coming, but the driver wasted no time.
He threw the truck into reverse, spinning the wheel hard before slamming it back into drive.
The maneuver sent the truck roaring toward the underpass just as the remaining SUV tried to recover.
Selene could feel her heartbeat in her ears as the truck barreled into the darkness of the underpass.
The air was thick with dust, the headlights barely illuminating the path ahead but the SUVs were falling behind and for the first time in what felt like hours, they had a lead.
Selene exhaled, her body slumping against the seat as the adrenaline started to wear off but she knew they weren't safe yet.
She turned her gaze toward the driver. 'Who are you?" she asked again, her voice quieter this time, but still demanding answers.
The man didn't look at her immediately. He kept his focus on the road, making sure they weren't being followed but after a moment, he spoke.
'The name's Caleb."
Selene narrowed her eyes. The name wasn't familiar, but there was something about him, something that told her this was far from a coincidence but before she could ask anything else, Axel stirred.
His voice was barely above a whisper. 'Selene…?"
Her heart clenched as she turned to him, brushing the hair from his damp forehead. 'I'm here, Axel. Stay with me."
But before she could say anything more, a loud explosion sounded in the distance and Selene's head snapped toward the back window.
The SUVs were still there and they were coming for them again.
