A Reckoning Unfolds
Selene's grip on the detonator was firm, her pulse hammering in her ears as Lucian stood mere feet away, his expression calm but his eyes burning with restrained amusement.
Eve lay against the cold stone wall, recovering from the force of Lucian's attack, her breath was uneven but her determination was unshaken.
The air in the corridor was thick with tension, the unspoken threat between them was more suffocating than the walls closing in around them.
Lucian took a slow step forward, his hands resting loosely in his pockets as if he had all the time in the world. 'You've always been so fascinating, Selene, always so desperate to believe you had control." His voice was quiet, laced with something darker beneath the surface. 'And yet, here you are, caught again."
Selene inhaled steadily, refusing to let her emotions dictate her next move because she knew better, Lucian had always thrived on manipulation, on pushing people just enough to make them doubt themselves but she wasn't that girl anymore.
Her fingers curled around the device, her thumb brushing over the button that could destroy everything in the vault. All the secrets, all the proof, all the leverage Lucian had spent years building, gone in an instant.
Lucian's gaze flickered toward the detonator, his smirk never faltering. 'Go on then," he murmured. 'Blow it all up." Selene's jaw clenched.
Lucian tilted his head slightly. 'What's stopping you?" Selene exhaled slowly. 'You wouldn't be standing here if you thought I wouldn't."
Lucian's lips curved into something almost smug. 'You're not a destroyer, Selene, you don't burn things down, you survive and that's the difference between us." Selene's pulse thundered, he was testing her.
Eve shifted slightly against the wall, pushing herself upright, her eyes flickering toward Selene; a silent question– are we doing this?
Selene's mind raced; she could press the button and end it, take away Lucian's hold over her past, her father's company, and Caleb's disappearance but would it be enough?
Lucian exhaled softly as if he had already won. 'You see, I've learned something about you, Selene." He stepped forward, closer than before. 'You're willing to risk everything but only if you believe you have nothing left to lose." Selene's breath caught.
Lucian smiled slightly. 'But you do."The implication was clear, Caleb and Selene's stomachs twisted.
Lucian's voice was soft, almost gentle. 'You destroy that vault, and I will spend every second making sure he pays for it."
Selene's fingers tensed around the detonator, he wasn't bluffing. Lucian's smirk widened as he read the hesitation in her eyes. 'Ah. There it is." Selene forced herself to remain still, she couldn't afford to react, not yet.
Lucian exhaled slowly, his eyes glinting with quiet victory. 'The thing about power, Selene, is that it's not about who holds the weapons, it's about who understands the cost."
Selene's grip on the detonator tightened.
Eve's voice cut through the silence. 'Then let's talk about cost."Lucian's head turned slightly as if just now remembering she was still there.
Eve straightened, her body language shifting stronger, unyielding.
Selene exhaled slowly, her mind calculating their next move; they weren't out yet but they weren't helpless either.
Lucian arched his brow. 'And what exactly do you have to bargain with?" Eve smirked. 'Me." Selene's breath hitched.
Lucian's expression flickered for the briefest moment, the mask slipping. 'I'm afraid I don't follow." Eve's gaze was sharp, unwavering. 'I know this estate better than anyone, I know where every passage leads, where every deal is buried, and exactly how many of your men are compromised." Her smirk widened slightly. 'Do you think they're all still loyal?"
Lucian's jaw tightened just barely and Eve stepped forward. 'You've built your empire on control, but even you can't hold all the pieces forever, so here's my offer." She glanced toward Selene. 'Let her and Caleb walk away." Selene's heart pounded.
Lucian let out a slow breath. 'And in return?"Eve smiled faintly. 'You get me."Selene stiffened. 'No."Lucian's lips parted slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before amusement settled in its place. 'Interesting."Selene turned toward Eve, her voice firm. 'We are not doing this."
Eve met her gaze evenly. 'It's the only way." Lucian chuckled softly. 'Now this is unexpected."Selene's blood boiled, she wouldn't let Eve trade herself for them.
Lucian exhaled, shaking his head. 'As entertaining as this is, I don't negotiate under pressure." His gaze flickered toward the detonator still clutched in Selene's hand. 'Drop it, and we'll talk."Selene hesitated.
Eve's voice was low, steady. 'Selene." Selene's fingers tightened and Lucian's smirk didn't falter. 'Tick tock." Selene let go and the detonator clattered to the floor.
Lucian's expression flickered with satisfaction. 'Good girl."Selene's pulse roared because she wasn't done yet.
Lucian turned toward Eve. 'Now, let's discuss the terms of your surrender."Eve's expression remained impassive. 'I don't surrender, I trade."
Lucian chuckled. 'And what exactly do you think you're worth?"Eve smirked. 'More than you realize." Lucian tilted his head slightly, his amusement flickering into something sharper. 'We'll see." Selene's heart pounded.
Lucian turned toward her, his gaze calculating. 'Take Caleb and go." Selene's breath hitched, just like that?
Lucian's smirk deepened. 'You already know I don't give gifts so if you leave, you leave for good." Selene clenched her fists. 'And Eve?"
Lucian's expression darkened slightly. 'She stays." Eve didn't flinch.
Selene's mind raced, there had to be another way then Lucian exhaled slowly. 'Decide, Selene." Selene's chest tightened, walk away and leave Eve behind… or stay and risk everything.
Lucian tilted his head. 'Time's up."
