A Line In The Sand
Selene's grip tightened around the gun, her finger hovering over the trigger with every muscle in her body screaming for action.
Still, she was frozen in place as Axel's weight pressed against her, his shallow breaths reminding her that she wasn't just fighting for herself, she was fighting for him.
Lucian stood across from her, calm and calculating dangerously, his gun was pointed directly at Axel and his expression was unreadable but his intent was clear, this wasn't just a standoff, it was a trap, one she had walked into without realizing.
The room was quiet, too quiet but beyond the walls, the echoes of gunfire and explosions still raged, but in this moment, time seemed to stand still.
Lucian's men were closing in, their shadows stretching across the floor as they surrounded her making it impossible for her to escape.
Lucian's voice was smooth, almost amused. 'You've always been stubborn, Selene but stubbornness only gets you so far, now drop the gun." But Selene didn't move.
Her mind raced through possibilities, but none of them led to survival and if she fired, Lucian's men would tear her apart before she could take another breath, if she surrendered, she would be handing Axel over to a man who had no mercy.
Her pulse pounded. 'You think I'm just going to give up?"
Lucian tilted his head slightly. 'I think you know there's no other choice." His finger hovered over the trigger. 'You don't decide how this ends. I do."
Selene's jaw clenched, she could hear the certainty in his voice like the unshakable confidence of a man who always won, he wasn't bluffing and if by any chance she hesitated or made the wrong move, Axel would die.
Her breath came in slow, measured inhales, she needed to break the rhythm but then Lucian took a step forward. 'Last chance."
Selene moved in one swift motion, she dropped to her knees, yanking Axel with her, at the same time, she fired upward, the shot wasn't aimed at Lucian, it was aimed at the overhead lights, the glass shattered, plunging the room into darkness.
Shouts erupted around her as Lucian's men reacted, but Selene was already moving, she didn't need sight to win as chaos was her only way out.
She grabbed Axel, pulling him toward the nearest cover, her body burned with the effort, but she ignored the pain.
Lucian's voice cut through the confusion, sharp and commanding. 'Find them. Now."
Selene didn't stop, she moved by memory, feeling the edges of the overturned medical carts and scattered debris, the air was thick with dust from the shattered lights, making it harder for Lucian's men to track her.
Axel stirred weakly in her arms, his voice barely above a whisper. 'Selene…" 'Stay with me," she whispered back.
Gunfire erupted in the darkness, bullets whizzed past, ricocheting off metal and sending sparks into the air, they were all shooting blind but Selene used it to her advantage.
She reached the far side of the room and ducked behind a toppled stretcher, pressing Axel against the cold floor as her heart pounded against her ribs.
She could hear Lucian moving through the chaos, his steps were unhurried like he wasn't panicking, as if he knew his men would flush her out eventually.
Selene's fingers trembled against the gun but she couldn't take them all on, not like this, all she needed was an opening just then a sudden explosion rocked the building.
The walls shook violently, sending loose debris crashing to the ground, the force of it knocked several men off balance, their shouts mixing with the deep, rumbling collapse of part of the ceiling Selene didn't hesitate, she moved, hoisted Axel up, forcing her legs to obey, and sprinted toward the opposite exit.
Lucian saw her and even in the flickering emergency lights, their eyes met and his smirk faltered but Selene didn't wait to see what he would do, she ran.
The hallway was barely holding together as flames licked at the edges and black smoke curled into the air, turning everything into a suffocating haze, the ground beneath her groaned, threatening to give way.
She pushed forward, her body screaming for relief then gunshots, she heard them before she felt the sharp crack of bullets splitting the air, then the sudden, blinding pain in her shoulder.
The force of it sent her stumbling and she barely kept her grip on Axel but she bit down hard, refusing to scream.
Lucian's voice echoed behind her, laced with amusement. 'Where do you think you're going?"Selene's vision was already blurred but she just had to keep moving as the exit was close.
The pain in her shoulder was relentless, spreading fire through her veins, her grip on the gun wavered, but she held onto it.
Axel's weight was too much making her legs tremble and her strength fade, then another figure appeared ahead of her and for a split second, her heart stopped.
Then, the figure raised his gun but not at her, the voice was familiar.'Get down!"
Selene dropped instinctively as a barrage of gunfire erupted past her, sending Lucian's men collapsing and the hallway fell into silence immediately.
Selene blinked, her vision clearing just enough to make out Caleb, he stood at the far end of the corridor, his gun raised, breathing hard and his shirt was stained with blood, his stance unsteady, but his eyes were sharp and alive.
Selene's breath hitched. 'Caleb…" He didn't waste time. 'Can you move?"
She swallowed hard, shifting Axel's weight, her shoulder throbbed as her body barely held together, but she nodded and Caleb didn't hesitate, he reached for her, gripping Axel's other arm. 'We're leaving. Now."Selene exhaled sharply and together, they ran.
The fire raged around them while the structure collapsed piece by piece, they pushed forward, their bodies battered, their strength fading, but neither of them stopped because behind them Lucian was still standing and this wasn't over.
