A Dangerous Gamble
Selene's eyes fluttered open, but the world around her was still a blur.
The intense heat from the explosion had left her disoriented, the sharp sting of smoke in the air causing her to cough and gag.
Her head throbbed with a dull ache pulsing with every heartbeat.
The room was spinning, and she couldn't tell which way was up.
The pain in her body was overwhelming, but there was no time to focus on it.
She forced herself to sit up, her body shaking as the world slowly came into focus.
The familiar sound of the building's structural groaning reached her ears, and the acrid scent of burning debris filled the air. Axel.
Her heart skipped a beat as her eyes scanned the room, desperately searching for him.
The last thing she remembered was the explosion, the blinding light, and the blast that had thrown them both into chaos. Where was he?
'Axel!" she shouted, her voice hoarse from the smoke and fear.
Her pulse raced as she scanned the wreckage around her but the room was a mess of twisted metal, burning wood, and shattered glass.
There was no sign of Axel, but she could feel the weight of his absence pressing on her chest like a heavy stone.
Panic surged through her as she pushed herself to her feet, stumbling slightly before regaining her balance.
The building was still shaking and the ceiling above her creaked ominously, threatening to collapse at any moment but she couldn't afford to think about that now.
'Axel!" Her voice was a little stronger this time, but there was no answer.
She moved through the debris, her legs weak from the blast and the exhaustion, but she couldn't stop.
Her hand brushed against a piece of broken metal, and she winced but kept moving, her eyes darted to every corner of the room, searching for him.
And then, through the haze of dust and smoke, she saw him, Axel was lying on the ground, his body crumpled against the debris.
His chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, but he wasn't moving.
'Axel!" Selene cried, rushing to his side. She knelt beside him, her hands trembling as she touched his face.
His skin was clammy, his forehead slick with sweat and his eyes fluttered open slightly, but they were unfocused and his gaze was distant.
'Axel, talk to me." Selene's voice cracked with panic rising in her throat.
Axel's lips parted, but it was a struggle for him to speak. 'I'm… fine. Just… just a little shaken."
His words were faint, but Selene could tell he was trying to stay calm, trying to reassure her but she could see the blood on his shirt, the bruises that were starting to form on his face.
He wasn't fine. He was hurt and they had no time to waste.
'We have to get out of here," Selene said, her voice firm, trying to focus on the task at hand. 'We can't stay here."
Axel nodded, but his movements were slow and sluggish. He reached out for her hand, his grip weak but insistent.
She pulled him up gently, supporting his weight as he leaned on her but the building groaned again with a deep, ominous sound that sent a chill down Selene's spine.
They couldn't stay here much longer. They needed to move.
'Come on." Selene urged, pulling Axel forward.
She was almost carrying him now, her arm around his waist as she helped him walk.
They staggered through the wreckage, the path forward unclear as the building continued to shake.
Every step felt like it could be their last but then, a loud bang from behind them froze them both in place.
Selene's heart skipped a beat as she turned, eyes widening.
There, standing in the doorway, was a figure.
A tall man clad in black, his face hidden in shadow but he didn't move, just stood there, watching them.
His presence alone sent a wave of unease washing over Selene. She could feel the danger radiating from him.
'Who are you?" Selene demanded, her voice sharp, though her body was still trembling with fear.
The figure didn't answer immediately. He simply stepped forward, his pace measured and calm.
It was as if he didn't have a care in the world but his eyes were locked on her, cold and calculating.
'You're too late," the man finally said, his voice smooth and confident. 'It's over."
Selene's mind raced but she didn't have time to process the implication as they were still in danger.
Axel was injured, and she couldn't protect them both if the man in front of them decided to attack.
'No." Selene's voice was low but firm. 'We're not done yet."
The man smiled, but it wasn't a smile that brought any comfort. It was cold, almost cruel as if he found her resistance amusing.
'You don't have a choice," he said, stepping closer. 'This isn't a battle you can win."
Selene's grip on Axel tightened, her mind racing as she searched for a way out.
She knew she couldn't fight him, not in this condition but there had to be something or some way to escape before she could act, the sound of footsteps approached from the hallway.
The building was coming down, and there was no way they could outrun the people who were closing in on them.
The man in front of her turned slightly, his head tilting as if he were listening to the sounds of their approaching doom.
Selene's stomach twisted in knots as she noticed they were surrounded again.
'We don't have much time," the man said, his tone suddenly serious. 'You'll be caught and you won't survive the next wave."
Selene's mind raced, she glanced toward Axel, who was still barely able to stand on his own.
They couldn't fight their way through but there was one thing they could do.
'Axel, we need to move, now," Selene said, her voice hard, the decision made.
Without waiting for a response, she grabbed him by the arm and pulled him toward the farthest corner of the room.
The sound of footsteps was getting louder and closer and they were left with little or no time.
But just as they reached the corner, the sound of gunfire rang out from behind them, the sharp crack of bullets piercing the air.
The bullets missed them by inches and the world seemed to slow down but the close call was enough to send them into a frantic scramble.
Selene pushed Axel to the ground, shielding him as the bullets flew past them.
The man in the doorway didn't flinch, not even when the gunfire erupted.
He was still watching them, his gaze unwavering, almost as if he were enjoying the chaos.
And then, as Selene pushed Axel further into the corner, the man spoke again, his voice softer this time, but still filled with cold certainty.
'You won't escape, this is the end."
Before Selene could react, the lights flickered, then went out completely, plunging the room into darkness.
