The Price Of Defiance
The gun fired right before Selene lunged, her fingers barely grazing the barrel as the shot rang out.
The crack of the bullet was deafening in the sterile room, drowning out the rapid beeping of Axel's monitor, her heart stopped and her entire body braced for the impact of a mistake she couldn't afford but the shot missed.
The second guard had grabbed the shooter's wrist at the last second, jerking the weapon off target and making the bullet deflect, embedding itself in the wall behind Axel's bed, missing him by inches.
The moment of confusion was all Selene needed, she twisted the gun from the first guard's grip, yanking it free before ramming her elbow into his ribs, he staggered, but before he could react, she fired and the shot struck him clean in the chest. He gasped with a choked sound before his body slumped to the ground.
The second guard snarled, swinging his fist at her face but Selene ducked just in time, the air slicing past her cheek as she rolled away. Her body screamed from exhaustion, every muscle strained beyond its limit, but she refused to slow down.
The guard lunged again, his hands reaching for the gun, but Selene was faster, she whipped the weapon upward, aiming for his throat, but he grabbed the barrel, forcing it away, the two of them struggled, locked in a battle of strength and sheer will, each refusing to let go.
Axel stirred behind her, his breathing still weak, but he was alive and that was all that mattered.
Selene gritted her teeth and drove her knee into the guard's stomach, he let out a pained grunt, loosening his grip just enough for her to yank the gun free, and without hesitation, she fired again.
The second shot tore through him then he collapsed beside his fallen partner his breath shuddering before going silent.
Selene's pulse thundered as she turned back toward Axel, her body trembling from adrenaline but she barely had time to process the kills as there was no time for hesitation.
She reached for him, gripping his wrist, her voice coming out hoarse. 'Axel, we need to move." His eyelids fluttered while his expression was dazed, his lips parted as if he wanted to speak, but no words came out, his body was still weak because his strength had been drained from the blood loss.
Selene's stomach twisted, Axel wasn't strong enough to walk then she glanced toward the hallway, and all she saw was chaos, filled with the sounds of distant explosions and gunfire and more would be coming, she thought.
Her hands shook as she unhooked the wires from Axel's arms, carefully not to disturb his fragile state. 'I've got you," she whispered, more to herself than him, with a deep breath, she hoisted him up, bracing his weight against her shoulder but the moment she did, his body sagged, too weak to hold itself up and he was barely conscious.
She adjusted her grip, shifting his arm over her shoulder. 'Just hold on," she murmured. 'We're getting out of here."
Axel let out a weak breath, his fingers twitching slightly against her arm, it was the only confirmation she needed then with one last glance at the ruined medical ward, she moved.
Every step was a battle and the extra weight made it harder to keep her balance, and every muscle in her body screamed in protest, the gun felt heavy in her grip, her fingers slick with sweat but she couldn't stop.
She navigated through the wreckage, avoiding fallen beams and shattered glass, her heart pounding with every passing second then, she heard more footsteps, and her blood ran cold.
The hallway ahead was blocked, collapsed from one of the earlier explosions so the only way forward was through a side corridor leading into the security wing.
It was a risk because if she was seen, if she was outnumbered, she wouldn't be able to fight back and carry Axel at the same time but there was no choice.
She pressed forward, tightening her hold on him, his breaths were shallow, but he was still with her, they entered the security wing, and the air was thicker with tension.
The walls were lined with monitors, some still flickering despite the power failures, and through the dim emergency lighting, Selene saw shadows moving just ahead, she froze, pressing Axel closer to the wall.
Three guards were approaching but they hadn't seen her yet.
Selene's grip tightened around the gun, if she fired, the noise would draw more of them but if she ran, they might see her either way she had to stay calm and think.
Then there was a voice over the intercom. 'Containment breach in lower sectors, priority target missing." That was Lucian.
Selene's heart skipped, she turned toward the nearest screen among the static and failing cameras, and she caught a glimpse of a figure moving fast through the lower halls who happened to be Caleb.
Her fingers twitched he was still fighting and still alive but for how long?
The guards ahead straightened at the announcement of which one of them pressed his radio. 'Orders?" A sharp response followed. 'Find them and kill anyone who resists."
Selene's stomach tightened, she had to act now, she shifted her grip on the gun, adjusting Axel's weight, there was only one way forward so she aimed carefully, exhaling slowly then, she fired.
The first bullet struck clean through the nearest guard but before the others could react, she moved. Her second shot clipped the shoulder of the next man, forcing him backward, the third spun toward her, but she was already ducking low.
She kicked out his knee, sending him crashing down, he let out a strangled gasp before she drove the butt of the gun into his skull.
The second man stumbled, reaching for his weapon but Selene didn't hesitate. She grabbed a knife from the first fallen guard and drove it into his chest and the room fell silent.
Her breathing was ragged and her arms shook from exertion but she still forced herself to keep moving.
She hoisted Axel higher, adjusting her grip as he stirred slightly but his eyelids barely opened. 'Selene…" His voice was weak, a broken whisper, she swallowed past the tightness in her throat. 'I've got you."
The hallway stretched ahead but the final exit was in sight, she pushed forward, her legs aching and her grip on him steady then a cold voice behind her.'Going somewhere?"Selene froze.
Lucian was standing in the doorway, unharmed with his sharp eyes locked onto her, his lips curving into a slow smirk like he had been waiting for this moment.
Selene's grip on the gun tightened, her breath coming in uneven bursts. Lucian stepped forward, his posture casual. 'You didn't think I'd let you leave that easily, did you?"
Selene's chest burned, she was so close to stopping now but Lucian wasn't alone as more footsteps echoed behind him.
Selene's fingers curled around the trigger, she had one shot and one last chance to end this, she inhaled sharply then, Lucian raised his own weapon.
The barrel gleamed under the dim light, aimed directly at Axel.
Selene's blood ran cold as her finger hovered over the trigger but Lucian's smirk deepened. 'Drop it."
