Running Through Fire
Gunfire exploded through the warehouse, echoing off the steel walls like a violent symphony.
The smell of gunpowder mixed with dust, filling the air with a sharp, burning scent. The men Victor had sent in moved with deadly precision, their weapons raised, their movements calculated.
Selene didn't panic. She never panicked.
She spun around, grabbing Aurora's wrist and pulling her down just as a bullet zipped past where her head had been seconds ago.
Axel fired a shot toward the entrance, cursing under his breath.
"We're boxed in!" Axel shouted.
Selene's mind worked fast, analyzing every possible way out. The front was blocked. The side exit was covered. The only way out was up.
Her eyes flicked toward the metal scaffolding above them. The catwalk.
She turned to Axel, her voice sharp. "Cover us. We're going up."
Axel didn't hesitate. He raised his gun, firing rapidly toward the advancing men. The noise was deafening, drowning out Aurora's quick breaths beside her.
Selene didn't give Aurora time to protest. She grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the old steel ladder bolted to the side of the wall.
Aurora stumbled but followed. "Selene"
"Move!" Selene snapped. swallowed hard and began climbing. Selene turned, firing two shots before following.
Axel covered them, his aim precise, his expression focused. "Go! I'll find another way out!"
Selene's stomach twisted. She didn't like leaving people behind but she knew Axel. He could handle himself.
She didn't waste time, she climbed fast, her muscles tight, the metal cold against her fingertips. Below, the gunfire didn't stop.
Aurora reached the top first, pulling herself onto the catwalk. Selene was right behind her.
The moment she got up, she grabbed Aurora's hand again, pulling her into a run.
The narrow platform shook under their footsteps, the metal was old, rusted in places, but it held.
Selene didn't stop until they reached the far end of the warehouse.
Aurora gasped, gripping the railing. "There's no way down."
Selene looked over the edge, too high to jump, too risky to climb.
Then her eyes landed on an old hanging chain near the rafters. It wasn't ideal but it was their only chance.
She turned to Aurora. "Hold on to me."
Aurora's breath was shaky. "What?"
Selene didn't wait for permission, she pulled Aurora against her, wrapping an arm around her waist.
Aurora's hands clutched Selene's shoulders. "Selene"
"Trust me."
Selene reached for the chain, gripping it tight, her arms strained but she didn't hesitate then she jumped.
Aurora screamed.
The world blurred as they swung across the warehouse, the air rushed past them, the weight of both their bodies pulling down.
The chain creaked.
Selene held on, then they crashed into the opposite platform.
The impact sent them rolling across the metal, Selene grunted as her back hit the railing,Aurora landed beside her, gasping for air.
For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Aurora turned sharply, her hands gripping Selene's arms. "Are you insane?"
Selene smirked. "We made it, didn't we?"
Aurora's golden eyes burned with frustration. "You could have killed us!"
Selene's breath was still fast, but her voice remained calm. "I didn't."
Aurora opened her mouth, then closed it. She exhaled sharply, shaking her head. "I swear, you enjoy doing reckless things just to scare me."
Selene's smirk deepened. "Maybe." Aurora groaned, running a hand through her hair.
Then a sound below. Selene's smirk vanished, she peeked over the railing.
The men were still searching, moving through the lower levels, but they hadn't seen where Selene and Aurora had landed yet.
Selene grabbed Aurora's hand again. "Come on." Aurora didn't argue this time.
They moved fast, staying low, navigating the rusted catwalks until they reached a door leading to the roof.
Selene pushed it open, stepping into the cold night air.
The rooftop stretched before them, an expanse of cracked concrete and industrial vents, beyond the edge, the city pulsed with neon lights, too far to reach on foot.
Aurora exhaled. "Now what?"
Selene's mind raced. They needed an escape.
Then headlights flashed from the alley below, a sleek black car screeched to a stop, the door opened.
Axel leaned out, grinning. "Need a lift?"
Selene smirked. "Perfect timing."
Aurora's eyes widened. "How did he..."
Selene grabbed Aurora's wrist again. "We jump." Aurora's breath hitched. "Again?"
Selene pulled her to the edge. "On three."
Aurora's fingers clenched around hers. "I hate you." Selene chuckled. "No, you don't." Then they jumped.
The wind rushed past them, the alley closed in fast. The moment their feet hit the top of the car, Axel hit the gas.
They rolled onto the hood, Selene pulling Aurora against her to break the impact then they were speeding away.
Gunfire erupted behind them, bullets ricocheting off the pavement.
Axel cursed. "They're persistent."
Selene sat up, gripping the side of the car. "Lose them." Axel smirked. "Already on it."
The car screeched around a corner, tires burning against the asphalt.
Aurora sat up beside Selene, breathing hard, for a second, neither of them spoke.
Then Aurora turned to Selene. "Tell me you had a plan." Selene smirked. "You mean besides trusting my instincts?"
Aurora groaned, dropping her head against the seat. "I hate your instincts."
Axel laughed from the driver's seat. "You should have seen the look on your faces when you landed on my car."
Selene rolled her shoulders, feeling the tension settle in her muscles then her expression darkened.
Victor had made his move, now it was her turn.
But before she could speak, a black SUV appeared in the rearview mirror.
Axel's grin faded. "They're still coming."
Selene's eyes narrowed. "Step on it." Axel didn't need to be told twice.
The car accelerated and the SUV followed.
Selene clenched her jaw.
They weren't out of danger yet and she wasn't sure if they would be anytime soon.
