The Reckoning (Continued)
The fire escape ladder groaned under their weight as they descended quickly, the metal steps shaking with each step.
Selene's breath was shallow, her heart pounding as she led the way, keeping her eyes on the street below.
The heat from the flames above them pressed down and she could hear the frantic footsteps of Axel and Aurora behind her.
They couldn't afford to look back, not even for a second.
The alleyway below was dark, shadowed by the towering buildings on either side.
They were in the city's heart and escape wasn't going to be easy but for now, they had a chance.
As soon as their feet hit the ground, Axel grabbed Aurora's arm, pulling her forward. 'We need to move fast," he said, his voice tight.
Selene didn't wait for them, she turned on her heels and started running, her legs aching with the effort.
They had to put as much distance between themselves and the warehouse as possible.
They needed somewhere to regroup and plan their next move.
But there was one thing Selene couldn't shake; the feeling that they were still being watched.
The shadow of their pursuers lingered in the back of her mind, as if every step they took was being tracked.
They rounded a corner, slipping into the quieter streets with the neon lights flickered overhead, casting long shadows on the pavement.
Selene glanced around, searching for an alley or a building that could provide some cover as they needed to be out of sight before the reinforcements arrived.
'We need to split up," Selene said, her voice low but filled with urgency.
'We can't stay together for long, they'll be watching the streets."
Axel nodded, his eyes scanning the area. 'You're right, we don't have a choice, we'll meet at the usual spot."
Aurora looked hesitant but nodded as well. 'Are you sure? We'll be safer if we stay together."
'No," Selene replied quickly. 'It's too risky. They know we're together now and we'll draw too much attention."
Axel grabbed her shoulder, his eyes locking with hers. 'We'll be fine, just keep moving."
Selene nodded, though the doubt in her chest didn't ease, she had a feeling they were being pushed into a corner and this wasn't just a random chase.
Someone knew exactly what they were doing, and they were orchestrating everything.
'Go," Selene said firmly as she gave Axel one last look before turning down another alley, her feet pounding against the pavement.
She heard Aurora's footsteps behind her for a moment, then the sound of them fading as she rounded another corner.
The alley was narrow and deserted, the only sound was her own breathing and the distant hum of the city.
Selene moved quickly, glancing around to make sure no one was following.
The adrenaline kept her moving, kept her going even though her body screamed for rest.
She had to get to the meeting point, that's all that mattered.
The streetlights flickered as she ran and the quiet of the alley made her feel exposed, every sound felt magnified, and every shadow was a potential threat.
Her eyes darted back and forth, searching for any sign of movement and that's when she heard a whisper.
It was soft at first, barely audible over the sound of her footsteps but then it grew louder, more distinct, like someone calling her name. Selene…
She froze, her heart racing in her chest, the voice was familiar, but it wasn't Axel or Aurora.
It was deeper and almost too smooth, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up as she turned toward the sound.
'Selene," the voice said again, this time louder, echoing off the alley walls.
She turned in a slow circle, trying to place the voice but there was no one there. Only shadows.
The air felt thicker and colder now as if the alley had become something else entirely.
'Who's there?" Selene demanded, her voice cutting through the silence, she held her breath, straining to hear any movement or any sign of someone else but there was nothing.
The city seemed to close in on her, the alley stretching longer and longer, becoming an endless tunnel.
The voice seemed to be everywhere, like a whisper on the wind, weaving in and out of her thoughts.
'You're not safe."
The words were sharper now, cutting through the air like a blade. Selene spun around, her gun in hand, ready to fire at anything that moved but again, there was no one.
The figure from the rooftop, that was the only thing she could think of.
The voice didn't answer, but she could feel its presence like an oppressive weight pressing down on her chest.
She started walking again, her mind racing, who could be behind this?
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of something moving in the shadows; a figure, just a blur, disappearing into another alleyway.
She took a step toward it, her breath steady. 'Show yourself!" she shouted, but the figure didn't respond.
Instead, the alley around her seemed to warp, the walls closing in, the air thick with smoke, was this real? She didn't know.
She stumbled but caught herself against the
Before she could react, a sudden light pierced the darkness; headlights, blinding and unforgiving.
A car screeched to a halt right in front of her, the headlights reflecting off the walls of the alley.
The doors flew open and a figure stepped out, tall, imposing, with a face half-hidden in shadow.
'You're too late."
The words were cold, final and for the first time in a long while, Selene felt something she hadn't in years—fear.
