24. Am I Cursed?
Clarice fell silent, pondering his question.
"What's wrong?" he asked worriedly.
Clarice sighed. She was thinking about how her relationship with Callum would end; tragedy or everlasting happiness?
"What's the matter, babe?" he asked, searching deeply into her eyes.
"Um, did you already make up your mind to cheat on your wife? Once we start having sex right now, things will never be the same again. We will keep doing this behind your wife's back and sooner or later, she will know," she said, taking a deep breath. "Now the question is, what is really your plan for us and our son?" she asked, wanting to hear his plan for their relationship.
He breathed deeply. "I don't know. I have no definite plan yet."
Clarice's hopes sank. Her heart was filled with sadness. "You can't leave your wife? Divorce her for me and your son. Is that hard for you to do?" she asked, bracing for his answer.
He fell silent for a moment. "I would like to do it, but...but..."
Clarice's forehead furrowed. "But what? Why can't you finish your statement?" she asked.
"It's difficult to do that right now," he mumbled, feeling conflicted inside. He can't tell her that his wife is trying hard to conceive and adding divorce to the already existing problem would break his wife's sanity.
Clarice pouted. "Do you love her more than me? That is why you can't leave her?"
He shook his head. "No, that's not the reason. I never loved her the way I loved you. Just that she has no one. Her father entrusted her life and her happiness to my care before he passed away. It's my responsibility to take care of her," he explained in a serious tone.
"I see... so in short, as long as she is alive you have to take care of her and remain by her side for life? Is that what you mean?" she asked in despair, as she bit her lower lip, deeply saddened that he was insanely devoted to his wife, making her super jealous inside. "But what about me? What about us?"
Alpha Callum fell silent for a long time.
She observed his face closely. She noticed that he had a hard time deciding. She knew that if his wife was out of the picture, Callum would certainly make her his wife and Luna, no doubt about it.
"After the divorce you can continue to support her financially if that is bothering you. I don't mind," she suggested to make things easier for the three of them.
He shook his head. "No, she won't accept a divorce from me. She told me we are a couple and will remain that way until one of us dies. She told me that if I find another woman to love, she will kill that woman because she has a right to protect her marriage and her position as the Luna of our pack."
Clarice's eyes widened in fear after hearing the threat. "So, she will kill me if she finds out we have rekindled our relationship?"
"Yup, that's right. That is why to prevent such things from happening, she must never know about you and Caden. She will go crazy due to jealousy and misery, and she might do something stupid that will put your life in danger. That is what I'm worried about," he replied in a somber tone.
Clarice looked him hard in the eyes. "So, because you are worried about what she's going to do to me and our son... you will just continue being married to her even if you don't love her anymore, and you are not happy with your married life? Is that what you are trying to tell me?"
"Yup, that's right. When it comes to genuine love, I don't love her. I would rather spend my whole life with you than with her. But since she is my wife, I can't leave her right away. She is a good wife and loyal to me. Her only flaw was her nasty attitude. Other than that, she is a good wife to me. All the more I feel guilty about kicking her out of my life and our pack," he explained in a sad and conflicted tone.
She sighed heavily. Tears shimmered in her eyes. "I'm indeed a very unlucky woman. I thought after meeting you I could finally have my everlasting happiness. It turns out being with you also proved to be much more difficult than the hardship I encountered at the hands of the evil shaman and Aurelia," she said miserably, her voice filled with bitterness.
He enveloped her in a loving embrace. "I'm so sorry about this problem I'm causing you, babe. It's all my fault," he sincerely apologized, pain flashing in his eyes.
"Don't apologize to me. It's not your fault," she said dispiritedly, her eyes heavy with unshed tears. "It's my fault for asking for your help and destroying your peaceful marriage with your wife. I'm so sorry I brought trouble into your life. Because of me, you are having a hard time trying to find a solution to our problems. If I had only known it would all come to this, I would have let the shaman kill me. You won't be facing this kind of problem today. I'm so sorry," she apologized.
Clarice could no longer hold back her tears. They rolled in torrents, wetting her face as Callum's hold tightened on her.
He planted a kiss on her head. "Shhh, don't cry. It's not your fault. The Moon Goddess brought us back together because we have a duty to fulfill for our son. We have to be good parents to him and raise him to be a good Alpha in the future. We can't do that if we don't meet again," he said, rubbing her back gently, consoling her.
Clarice couldn't be comforted, her cries getting louder as her heart was breaking inside. "I feel like I'm a cursed wolf and I have no right to live in this world anymore. I'm a parasite, destroying other people's lives. I feel guilty," she said, weeping hard. Her body trembled as deep sadness squeezed her heart painfully.
"Please don't say that, babe. You are definitely not a cursed person. Stop crying. I will find a way to solve this problem. We will surely find a way. We will survive this problem that we are facing right now. Let me handle this..." he said reassuringly, wanting her to stop crying because his heart couldn't handle the sight of her drowning in tears, tearing his heart apart.
After a few minutes of shedding tears, feeling guilty and feeling sorry for herself, Clarice finally stopped crying. His t-shirt was already soaked with tears. "I'm sorry, I wet your t-shirt," she apologized.
He smiled. "I'm glad my t-shirt caught all your tears or else we have been drowning in your tears right now," he joked, kissing her head. "Are you done crying?" he asked softly.
She nodded her head. "Yeah. I'm done crying. I ran out of tears to cry," she replied with a smile.
"Good," he said in relief. "Will you be okay?"
"Yes. I'm going to be okay because I have you and our son to think about," she replied, looking adoringly at him.
"That's good to hear. Don't entertain negative thoughts from now on. Just focus on me and our son, the rest doesn't matter anymore," he said thoughtfully.
The couple cuddled on the bed, grateful for the comforting presence of each other.
"Babe, would you still continue to go to the mall tomorrow?" he asked.
"Yes, definitely! I'm looking forward to it," she replied excitedly.
"Alright, as long as you're happy I will give you permission," he said, kissing her head. "Let's go to sleep now," he whispered.
"OK. Night, sleep tight, sweet dreams," she said, smiling sweetly.
"Goodnight, babe," he said softly and closed his eyes to sleep.
Callum was already snoring softly beside her on the bed. He was still holding her close to him.
The night was getting late. But Clarice can't sleep, not yet. A nagging feeling bothered her consciousness. What if she is indeed a cursed she-wolf?
Her body shuddered. She was deeply affected by the horrific idea swirling in her heart and mind, desperately hoping she was not a cursed wolf. Because a cursed wolf can never achieve happiness. She can only live a tormented life.
With a deep sigh, she closed her eyes, forcing herself to sleep.
